In light of the ECB hiring a more extensive scouting network, there are some changes to the make-up of the squad ahead of the 2002 summer of cricket. As a result, there are three potential debutants in the squad: one is a 32-year-old batter from Surrey who should arguably have been called up long before now in the form of Ali Brown; one is Simon Jones, a young fast bowler who recently took a hugely impressive six for 45 in his season opening County Championship game, and one is the long standing reserve wicket-keeper, James Foster. England will no doubt be looking to get a look at these players between now and this winter's Ashes series, so one expects that more or less the entire squad will get at least some exposure to Test cricket this summer.

Despite all the talk about experimentation, Nick Knight was able to announce a relatively standard England team at the toss ahead of the first day's play: Mark Ramprakash had been recalled to the team on the back of his stellar County Championship form, and the bowling attack would comprise four seamers (including Simon Jones, making his Test debut) and one spinner (Phil Tufnell, back after resting from the New Zealand tour). Sri Lanka too had opted for four seamers and one spinner, that spinner being the captain Sanath Jayasuriya. One assumes that if he had been fit for this Test, Murali would have played; instead, the English batters would look to cash in in his absence.

And, without meaning to spoil anything, that's exactly what the English batters did. The openers got off to their customary good start before Nick Knight fell to a rare good ball from Ruchira Perera which turned him around and had him edging to slip for 51. Stewart made a dashing 31 from number three, but it was the Trescothick-Thorpe partnership that stole the headlines. Not only did Trescothick score a personally important 125 that showed he would not be defined by his winter struggles, but he scored them from only 146 deliveries. Thorpe at the other end was no less fluent; he remained the dominant partner alongside Mark Ramprakash (who made 59 on his return to the team), and breezed past a century of his own. Eventually Thorpe would be stranded only one run short of his 200 as Phil Tufnell gloved a short ball to become the last man out. England had punished the ropey touring seam attack and scored at more than four and a half runs per over in favourable conditions.

Such was the scoreboard pressure in front of them that the Sri Lankan batters faltered: Marvan Atapattu would eventually be last man out for a stoic 78, but he found little support from his colleagues. Despite the inexperienced nature of this English attack (Flintoff, in his fifth Test, is the second-most experienced seamer present), the wickets were shared around quite equitably: Ryan Sidebottom took the scalps of Jayasuriya and Sangakkara; Simon Jones marked his debut with the wickets of Jayawardene, de Silva and Vaas; Phil Tufnell added the scalps of Arnold, Tillakaratne and Buddhika to go to a career tally of 491, and Andrew Flintoff then finished the innings with the wickets of Zoysa and Atapattu. Only Alan Mullally - so often the destroyer - went wicketless, though he also conceded runs at just 1.5 per over. Everyone bowled well.

With so much time left in the game, Knight chose for his team to bat again. This time, conditions were less favourable and several batters (Knight, Trescothick and Stewart in particular) lost their wickets cheaply. Thorpe, however, looked in fine touch once again: he added 83 more runs to his match tally, finding support from Ramprakash, Flintoff and Read. When Thorpe was dismissed though, Knight immediately called the England innings to a close, seeing no reason to risk the tail-enders.

Just the small matter of 539 runs for Sri Lanka to win the Test, then. The Sri Lankans never really made a serious effort at it - instead they put a high price on their wickets and hoped for the weather to take care of things for them. It certainly tried its best, as Day Four remained almost entirely overcast and dingy, but the English bowling also remained disciplined. Only Simon Jones conceded more than two runs per over, and even he leaked only 2.75. Andrew Flintoff produced the best sustained bowling performance of his career so far though, and ensured that the pressure built by the legend Phil Tufnell at the other end was sustained. Ultimately, it was a massive England win that never looked in doubt from the first ball of the game to the last.

It must have been of huge relief to any neutral cricket fans tuning in to know that Muttiah Muralitharan was back in the Sri Lankan team for this second Test match. This was the only change made to the Sri Lankan team as Jayasuriya and his charges retained confidence in their abilities. Meanwhile, the England team had made some changes: Nick Knight explained that the team was missing Alec Stewart this week not because he was dropped, but because the coaching staff wanted to look at some of the other members of the squad on this occasion. He also guaranteed that Stewart would be back for the third Test match. The home side had also shuffled their bowling attack a little bit, bringing in Craig White for what might be a direct head-to-head with Andrew Flintoff, as well as Matthew Hoggard in place of the rested Alan Mullally.

This time around, Jayasuriya won the toss and was able to call dibs on first use of the facilities: he and Atapattu were able to immediately cash in with Sri Lanka's first century partnership of the series. That partnership would ultimately be broken by England's newest new Botham, Andrew Flintoff. That would be Flintoff's only wicket of the innings, but he did have another hugely impactful moment: he dug in a vicious short ball, and broke two of Aravinda de Silva's fingers. He had to leave the crease, and was later confirmed to be out for the rest of the series. From then on, it was the Ryan Sidebottom show as the left-arm youngster took advantage of a visibly rattled Sri Lanka to pick up five quick wickets in almost no time at all. This upstaged Tufnell, who already had two wickets to his name from earlier in the innings and added the scalp of Vaas while Sidebottom was doing his thing.

In reply though, the English batters struggled under thick cloud cover: the conditions made both Vaas and Zoysa into a real handful, almost as much as the world class Murali who bowled most of the innings from the other end. Only Knight, Flintoff and White (all 32) were able to score more than 12 as the England innings fell to bits. When Matthew Hoggard became the last man out (stumped, lunging at a Murali doosra), it ensured that Sri Lanka would be the proud owners of a 164-run first innings lead that they would be hoping to make count.

However, early wickets from Hoggard and Sidebottom left Sri Lanka reeling at 46 for three, which worked out = slightly confusingly, due to the lead and the de facto wicket of de Silva, who would not be batting - as a net 210 for four. No longer an impregnable position. Jayawardene and Tillakaratne did rebuild, adding a partnership of 68, before Tillakaratne became the first wicket of the pacy young Simon Jones. Jones delivered an unbelievable spell that would see him finish with figures of 10.1 overs, five for 39 and completely turn the match around: suddenly, England needed only 317 to win.

They'd have to score these runs though, without Alec Stewart - the best batter in the world when it comes to run chases, but watching on from the balcony for this game. Neither opening batter made a telling contribution, and it looked like the tourists were overwhelming favourites to drag things back to 1-1. However, the recalled Ramprakash and Graham Thorpe are oh-so used to batting together at Surrey, and they just settled into a natural rhythm batting together. Thorpe's stunning form continued throughout an assured 110-run partnership before disaster struck: he edged Nuwan Zoysa through to Sangakkara behind the wickets.

This meant that Andrew Flintoff, playing only his second innings in a Test top five, would have to take responsibility, and he did so by playing his shots. He was dropped on one occasion, but he also laced seven fours and a six on his way to his second Test 50 from just 63 balls. Not that the game was done yet, and Murali retorted by spinning one back through the gate. But Ramprakash was still there and batting well: his second Test century has been a long time coming, but he certainly picked the best occasion to make it count. Ultimately, Ramprakash would finish with a fantastic 127 not out, having steered England to an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. He might shuffle back down to number five for the short term, but he now looks to have cemented himself as Alec Stewart's successor at number three.

Coming into the final Test of the series, England were experimenting again: this time, Duncan Fletcher and Nick Knight had put together a team with a rarely-seen four man bowling attack featuring all the bowlers who have starred for England so far this season in Sidebottom, Jones, Flintoff and Tufnell. At the toss, Nick Knight explained that Mullally hadn't fallen out of favour, but that he and the team already know what Mullally has to offer. This change to the balance of the team made room for an extra batter, which made a debut possible for the deserving Ali Brown. This also meant that England had selected a Surrey 3-4-5-6, much to the delight of the returning Stewart. For Sri Lanka, there were also several changes: the injured de Silva was replaced by Prasanna Jayawardene who took the gloves, while Upashantha and Fernando refreshed two thirds of the Sri Lankan seam attack.

Thanks to Nick Knight winning the toss and batting first, England got first use of what looked like a very batting friendly surface. Knight unfortunately couldn't lead from the front this time, as he edged through to the wicket-keeper on only 12, but after his wicket almost every other England batting partnership was worth at least 100. First, Trescothick and Stewart paired for 132 runs before Stewart (58) edged behind. Then Thorpe joined Trescothick for a partnership of exactly 100 that ended when Vaas trapped the England number four LBW. Next came Mark Ramprakash, who partnered with Trescothick for a partnership of 79. 45 of those runs belonged to Ramprakash, who was unfortunate enough to be dismissed for 45. This meant that the debutant Ali Brown came in to bat with the best possible platform he could have hoped for: he capitalised on this with a score of exactly 50. Throughout all of this, Marcus Trescothick had been batting serenely at the other end: the Somerset man assembled a massive unbeaten 250 before Nick Knight called his men in. What an innings, what a player.

In reply, the tourists were struggling again: they had experimented with Russel Arnold at the top of the order so that Sanath Jayasuriya could reinforce the middle order, but that didn't work at all as Simon Jones nicked him off for a seven-ball duck. Ryan Sidebottom then followed that up with the wickets of Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Tillakaratne and Prasanna Jayawardene did mount a bit of a recovery effort with a solid sixth wicket partnership, but ultimately the four-man battery was just too strong for Sri Lanka, spreading the wickets amongst themselves and feasting on the struggling batters. One notable wicket was that of Chaminda Vaas: when the plucky left-hander meekly prodded a spinning delivery back to Tufnell in his follow-through, this brought up the left-arm spinner's 500th Test wicket. Tufnell is the first bowler ever to reach this historic milestone.

Again, Nick Knight declined to enforce the follow-on - no doubt a wise move with only a four-man bowling attack. Able to play with complete freedom, the English openers put together a double-century partnership that was dominated by the fast-scoring Trescothick who made his 109 off just 139 balls. Stewart failed at number three, and Thorpe hung around for long enough to see Nick Knight to his century. When the Surrey left-hander chipped an off-break back to Muttiah Muralitharan, Knight declared for the second time in the match, setting Sri Lanka a notional 520 to win, or two days of batting to not lose.

Despite yet another stoic rearguard from Atapattu, Sri Lanka never threatened to bat for two days. Although they did put up plenty of resistance, the English bowlers - in particular Ryan Sidebottom and Simon Jones - were relentless. The young Welshman had already started his Test career with a huge bang with 13 wickets to his name before the start of his spell. By the end of it, he was up to 19: in a stunning spell of world class bowling, he took the wickets of Arnold, Jayawardene, Atapattu, Tillakaratne, Jayawardene and Vaas. Against Jones, the Sri Lankans never stood a chance. Sidebottom and Tufnell took two more wickets each to round off a dominant performance.

Phil Tufnell is on top of the world!

England and Middlesex's legendary spinner Phil Tufnell became the first bowler ever to cross 500 Test wickets in the third match against Sri Lanka this week. He stands on top of the world, leading West Indies' all-time great Courtney Walsh who finished his career on 494 wickets*.

"There's not much more left in the legs to be honest," Tufnell told Test Match Special after his historic achievement. "I never would have believed this right up until it happened. It still doesn't feel real."

Shane Warne leads a pack of contenders including himself, Murali, McGrath and Kumble who are likely to surpass Tufnell's record, but for now it doesn't matter. He is the first.

* To explain the Courtney Walsh situation, in real life he finished his career with 518 Test wickets. However, a lot of those came against England in Tests that I have re-written in this playthrough. I do not have full scorecards for those matches, but the absolute maximum possible wickets he can have taken based on the potted scores I have available is 517, but that is mathematically very unlikely. For the first time in years, this England Test squad does not feature Craig White: a clear sign that he has been usurped for good by Andrew Flintoff. Surprisingly, he was replaced in the squad by another batter: David Fulton had earned a recall, possibly with coach and captain wanting to get a clearer picture of his game ahead of Ashes selection. Meanwhile, there is a small change in the bowling department, with Matthew Hoggard losing his place in favour of Alex Tudor and his raw pace. Graeme Hick also made the best possible case to return to the playing XI following his remarkable 315 against Durham - will England be forced to stick with a four-bowler balance to their team? Otherwise, this is a very settled squad.

England won the toss and chose to bat

Despite his stunning 315 against Durham, there was no way into the England team for Graeme Hick as Mark Ramprakash held onto his place on the back of a career-best series against Sri Lanka in which he averaged almost 70 with the bat. Knight also confirmed that England had gone back to their usual five-bowler strategy; with Simon Jones getting some deserved rest, that meant Alex Tudor vaulted straight into the England team for the first Test of the series alongside the returning Mullally. India, meanwhile appeared to be at full strength with arguably the strongest top six in cricket. Perhaps the bowling left a little to be desired, but still.

England had first use of fine batting conditions, but it was India who drew first blood as Ajit Agarkar dismissed the in-form Trescothick very early on. In the over before lunch, Alec Stewart became the first victim of India's partnership-breaker Virender Sehwag: the off-spinner hating off-spinner got one to hold its line and trap the veteran LBW. Knight and Thorpe, the latter seemingly in a hurry, added an impressive century partnership in the afternoon session. But then it happened again: in the last over before tea, Sehwag caught the edge of Thorpe, and suddenly he had two of the three wickets to fall. That was probably as good as things got for India though: the excellent Nick Knight progressed serenely to his 16th Test century, and had excellent support from the in-form Ramprakash. India's pain was eventually completed when, midway through Day Two, Alex Tudor notched up his first-ever Test half-century. The only way India could get out of this was to throw the ball to Virender Sehwag, who promptly added the last two wickets to post a first-class career best of 7.3-1-19-4.

The Indian reply followed almost exactly the same pattern as the English innings: number 2 (Jaffer) got out cheaply, bers 1 and 5 (Sehwag and Ganguly) both scored centuries, number 4 (Tendulkar) scored a half-century in the middle of that, and number 8 (Agarkar) provided some late-innings entertainment with a fun cameo (33).Three of the English bowlers particularly stood out in this innings: Ryan Sidebottom, Alex Tudor and Phil Tufnell took three wickets each, while the odd one out went to Alan Mullally. Flintoff struggled a little for rhythm, which really showed the benefit of having a five-man attack where the other four can take the slack. Eventually, England ended up with a 65-run lead.

England's second innings would be crucial, as they would seek to turn that narrow lead into an impossible fourth innings run-chase. At the centre of that effort was Marcus Trescothick: he might have failed in the first innings, but you truly cannot keep a player of his quality down for long. Even as conditions became more and more difficult for batting, he played a fluent and virtually chanceless innings from the top of the order. As the bowlers tired, two of England's middle and lower order batters were able to come up with contributions of their own: Andrew Flintoff with a rapidfire 57, and Alex Tudor with his second half-century of the game; this time, 54 not out. But both paled in comparison to the masterful 123 from Trescothick at the top of the order. Pundits expected England to declare overnight, but rather than any of the batters, it was Phil Tufnell who was sent down to do the end-of-play interview.

In that interview, he announced that this Lord's Test match would be his last in Test cricket, and thus that the upcoming fifth day's play would be his last in an England shirt. And the stage was set for England's greatest ever spin bowler to bowl his country to victory on the fifth day for one last time.

Sure enough, the fifth day dawned to the announcement that England had declared and set India an improbably 394 to win on the final day. From early on, it was obvious that there were no thoughts in the away dressing room of pushing for a win as the pitch started to break up; instead, a stout forward defence was the order of the day and despite the early loss of Wasim Jaffer, Sehwag and Dravid were able to provide it. The pair saw India to lunch and beyond for the loss of only one wicket, but then it happened: Mullally and Tufnell started to bowl in tandem. At this point in the game, India were sitting comfortably on 62 for one; this did not last.

First Dravid and Tendulkar fell to Kumble, then Sehwag and Laxman fell to Mullally. Ratra (to Tufnell), then Ganguly (to Mullally), then Agarkar (to Tufnell) fell to reduce India to a tottering 104 for 8. Both English spearheads were sat on four wickets each; Mullally for 29 runs and Tufnell for 23. Could they both get onto the Lord's Honours Board? The answer, of course was yes! Mullally got one to angle across Kumble and take the shoulder of the bat en route to Nick Knight at slip. Then Zaheer Khan briefly delayed the script by pumping Tufnell through mid-wicket for four runs before the legend made the next delivery turn from a middle-and-leg stump line to take the top of Zaheer's off stump.

Tufnell had just delivered the perfect delivery to end the perfect Test career. What a player.

20-year-old James Anderson receives shock Test call-up
Barely three months into his first-class career, 20-year-old Lancashire fast bowler James Anderson has received a call-up to the England Test team. This comes off the back of an outstanding performance against Hampshire in the County Championship, where he took match aggregate figures of nine wickets for 50 runs, bringing his career bowling average down to just 22.91. England opening batter Marcus Trescothick described Anderson as "the biggest talent in English cricket right now," which bodes especially well for his coming career.

This Test at Trent Bridge marked the start of a new era: the first post-Tufnell Test match. As well as Graeme Swann's recall, Simon Jones came back into the team in place of Ryan Sidebottom as England continued their newfound policy of rotating their fast bowlers. Otherwise, the batting was unchanged. For India, Parthiv Patel was plucked from the depths of the squad to make a shock Test debut: Patel has so far played only four domestic matches in India, all four in the recent Deodhar Trophy (India's regional one-day tournament). Additionally, Harbhajan Singh has replaced Anil Kumble as the team's sole specialist spinner. Will this be enough to improve India's position relative to a strong England team?

Zaheer Khan got things off to a good start for India, managing to jag one back into Knight - who had won the toss and batted. The England captain missed the ball and lost his off stump. Stewart came in at number three and partnered Trescothick for a century partnership; however, the Somerset man fell between 50 and 100 for the first time in almost a year. And of course, this just brought another form man to the crease. As teammates for both Surrey and England, Alec Stewart and Graham Thorpe must have batted together for as long as any other pair in cricket history, and this time they added another four and a half hours of batting to that tally. In that time, they mounted a stellar 214-run partnership, during which time Alec Stewart made his 24th Test century. Stewart finally fell for 145. After one brought two (this time, the wicket of Mark Ramprakash), England sat on 339 for four. Could India pull things back?

Nope. Andrew Flintoff had previously made eight first-class centuries, and he tended to make them in style: his 137 against Surrey in May had come off just 106 balls, and frankly they have all been like this: all of them either at or nearly at a run a ball. And on the second day of the game, his maiden Test century came the same way: rapidly. Flintoff launched an onslaught in which he marmelised the Indian bowling for 185 runs off exactly 185 balls, the dominant partner in a 313-run fifth wicket partnership with Thorpe. Flintoff's innings was eventually ended by, of all people, Sourav Ganguly. Then, hilariously, a three-ball duck from Chris Read ensured that the Indian captain picked up a double-wicket maiden. As this innings continued to mount, there was only one question left to ask: could Graham Thorpe score a triple-hundred? No. No he couldn't; he was finally caught on the boundary by Virender Sehwag off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh.

In the face of England's monstrous 691-run first innings, what could India do to save themselves? Initially, not much: the young phenom Simon Jones promptly dismissed both Indian opening batters, which could really have set the tone. However, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar are two of the world's absolute best batters. Dravid eventually fell for a hard-fought 75, but Tendulkar recorded an excellent 139 that unfortunately was only the third most impressive innings of the Test so far. He was the fifth man out, and it was at this point that Knight brought Simon Jones back into the attack. Simon Jones obliterated the Indian batting. The last five Indian wickets fell for only 27 runs, all of them to Jones, four of them caught behind the wicket. Just a world-class spell of swing bowling. Yet again, Knight opted not to enforce the follow-on; bowlers need rest after all.

Not a huge rest of course; the England second innings lasted only 20 overs before Knight declared, but Graham Thorpe thrashed a 25-ball 47 before being dismissed by the last ball of the innings. He might just be the player of the match this week.

And so, India needed 501 runs to win, at least theoretically. That was of course never going to happen, but could England bowl the tourists out in four sessions of cricket? Of course they could. Jones, Tudor and Swann shared nine of the ten wickets between them, with the wickets of Jaffer, Laxman and Agarkar giving the Welshman his first ever ten-wicket match haul. India's 323-run effort in the fourth innings was objectively quite good, but nothing could have overcome the overwhelming advantage that England had built earlier in the match.

2-0 up with two to play, and England have now won seven consecutive Test matches, tying their two previous record stints from 1885-88 and 1928-29. Another win at Headingley would be enough to give England their all-time record, and putting them joint-fourth behind Australia (16 matches, 1999-2001), West Indies (11, 1984) and Sri Lanka (9, 2001-02, ending just before their early summer series this year).
