Hayden Sumner appointed as new Crows coach

In a surprise move Adelaide have appointed previously unknown Hayden Sumner as coach for the 2011 season.
Not surprisingly a number of supporters have questioned the direction of the club and the football world will no doubt be watching with great interest to see if this gamble pays off.

Welcome to the Adelaide Footy club

Welcome to Adelaide for the upcoming 2011 season.
You had come highly recommended and we look forward to the success that you're bound to bring to the club.

We are expecting the club to push for finals contention this season and well conduct monthly reviews to give feedback on your peformance.

Your current contract expires on 1/11/2012 and give that you're new to the club we are not willing to enter into extention talks until the end of the season.

Adelaide Season Preview

Adelaide would be expecting the club to push for finals contention this season and have no doubt communicated that to coach Hayden Sumner after having missed the finals last season

With Nathan VanBerlo leading the team as captain, and Scott Thompson as his deputy Adelaide's strength is in their midfield with players like Scott Thompson, Bernie Vince and Chris Knights giving them the advantage around the stoppages.

The club is a powerhouse financially and are hoping for something in the other of 51000 members this season

Preseason Competition Starting

The 2011 preseason competition is set to kick off on 04/02/2011 with clubs as usual set to take a wide range of approaches.

Many coaches view the competition as a chance to experiment with players in different roles and to test some of their young draftees against stronger competition. Other are glad to exit early on, in favour of keeping their players safe from injury. The majority aren't too concerned about the results but see it as an opportunity to game some match fitness leading up to Round One. For the cash strapped clubs though, the competition with it's $585,000 top prize offers a much needed source of extra revenue, and a chance to entice some extra members on board with increased optimism for the season ahead.

Preseason Round 1

The first round of the 2011 preseason competition sees last years premier Collingwood get the bye and automatically progress to round 2. For the other sides, the team with the greatest loosing margin will be eliminated while the remaining teams will play next week.

Brisbane Vs North Melbourne
Melbourne Vs Essendon
Geelong Vs Adelaide
Western Bulldogs Vs St.Kilda
Sydney Vs Carlton
Hawthorn Vs Gold Coast
Richmond Vs Port Adelaide

preseason1.jpg

Coaches Comment's: We have gone with a pretty experienced line-up. Kurt Tippett has been named at full-forward and we expect a big game from the kid. He has had a big preseason and he will be looking to make all that hard work count ready for a big season. Taylor Walker has been named at Centre Half Forward. This year is the make or break year for Taylor, he really needs to step up this year and make a name for himself at the club, and become one of the power forwards of the competition. Also on the same level of Walker is Patty Dangerfield. We all know what the man is capable of and we look forward to the year ahead with him, he has been named on the half forward flank for the match.
Some speed through the midfield with new recruit Richard Tambling on the wing. Never really hit he's straps at Richmond, so we've recruited him and hopefully get the best outta this young man. Nathan VanBerlo the captain named in the middle with speedster David MacKay named on the other wing.
Andy Otten, Phil Davis who has big shoes to fill now that Nathan Bock has left the club for the Gold Coast, and Matthew Janesch take out the half back line, while old firms, Michael Doughty, Ben Rutten and Graham Johncock will hold the Crows back line.

Sam Jacobs who was recruited from Carlton get his chance in the ruck. He has impressed at West Lakes over the preseason, so with a big preseason under his belt, Jacobs is ready for a big year. Scott Thompson and Bernie Vince have been named our onballers.
Brent Reilly, Rory Sloane and Brad Moran are the 3 interchange players while Brad Symes will today be our sub.

Geelong ease through NAB Cup Round 1

Geelong had the best of it in the first quarter, and went into the break leading by 19. Geelong extended their lead in the second term, adding another 4.1 to go in 31 points up at the main change. Geelong kept their momentum going throughout the third quarter, and extended their lead to 54 points at the final break. The final quarter belonged to Geelong. They built on the 3/4 time lead to run out eventual winners by 81 points. 16.12 to 4.3

The home side had no trouble accounting for the opposition, as little man Matthew Stokes kicked 4 goals for the home side. Geelong didn't need their power forward in James Posiadly to kick any of their goals, as it was big man Brad Ottens and on ballers, Joel Selwood, Jimmy Bartel who kicked 2 apiece. James Kelly was sensational across half back picking up a equal game high 34 disposals, sharing those honours with Adelaide's half backer, Andy Otten. Jimmy Bartel and Joel Selwood strutted their stuff through the midfield, while Joel Corey seems to be getting better by age, racking up 27 possesions.

On a dismall day for the Crows, Patrick Dangerfield was a shining light up forward and kicked 3 goals for the visitors, while Chris Knights slotted the only other goal home as the Crows only kicked 4 goals for the whole match. Completely out played and out smarted, Andy Otten tried with 34 touches, while Centre Half back Phil Davis racked up 26 himself. Not a great day for the Crows overall going down to the tune of 81 points in their first slog of the 2011 season.

Fremantle had the best of it in the first quarter and went into the break leading by 13. Fremantle extended their lead in the second term, adding another 5.4 to go in 15 points up at the main change. Adelaide increased their workrate in the third term, outscoring Fremantle, 4.1 to 3.3 but still found themselves trailing by 11 points at the final break. The final quarter belonged to Adelaide. Trailing at the final break, they outscored Fremantle by 7 points in the last quarter but it wasn't enough, they lost in the end 16.10 to 16.6.
Fremantle seemed to somehow find a way out of trouble once Adelaide looked threating on the scoreboard. John Anthony who was recruited from Collingwood for his lead up work in the forward line, kicked 2 goals, while young ruckman, Zac Clarke drifted forward and slotted 2 home for the visitors. Fremantle had a even spread of Goal kickers, not relying on their main star, Matthew Pavlich to kick them all.
Ryan Crowley had a good match across the midfield, while Paul Duffield picked himself up 20 possesions for his hard work across half back where Adelaide manteled all their attacks.
For the visotors, Taylor Walker and Kurt Tippett proved why they are a big duo force to be reckoned with, kicking 11 goals between them. Out of favored big man, Brad Moran also slotted home a goal for the Crows.
Scott Thompson worked hard and found himself with 34 touches at the end of the game, while good signs from a couple of the young Crows, Patrick Dangerfield playing more in the midfield and racking up 30 touches, while Matthew Jaensch worked his beautiful kicking to perfection picking up 29 disposals across half back.
The Fremantle Dockers come away with a 4 point victory here at Subiaco, but the Adelaide Crows come away with their head held high after a gallant defeat.

Round 1, Sunday, 20/03/2011
Footy Park: Adelaide vs Richmond

Preview: Adelaide VS Richmond

Adelaide and Richmond have met 28 times throughout their developing history, with Adelaide boasting a 67.86% success rate.

Adelaide will not have the services of important ruckman Ivan Maric, while Richmond go into the game without any serious injury concerns.
On paper Adelaide look to have a clear advantage and the Tigers are going to have to be at their best to have any chance of winning. Adelaide has the stronger ruck division which combined with their midfield advantage is going to make life difficult for the Tigers. TIP: Adelaide by 54-66 points.

Richmond had the best of it in the first quarter and went into the break leading by 10 points. Adelaide came out firing in the second quarter. They added 4.2 to Richmond's 4.1 in that quarter by still trailed by 9 points going into the main change. Adelaide kept their momentum going throughout the third quarter and extended their lead to 13 points at the final break. The final quarter belonged to Adelaide. Trailing at the final break, they outscored Richmoond by 33 points in the last quarter to snatch victory 17.13 to 15.5. For Adelaide Kurt Tippett was outstanding with 22 possessions, while Rory Sloane (4 goals), Chris Knights (32 possessions) and Scott Thompson (31 possessions) also contributed strongly. For Richmond Tyrone Vickery (19 possessions) battled hard all day.
Coaches Comments: I am very pleased with the victory this evening. We showed that we can put 4 quarters together and the playing group had the strength in their minds that they could run over the top of the Tigers and snatch the win. We trailed for most of the match, so to come back and win by 33 points in the end is a credit to the players and just shows that they dug deep in the last quarter to get a winning result. I was very impressed with Brad Moran tonight. Last year Moran didn't get much opportunity as we already had out ruck duties filled with Griffen and Maric, but with the departure of Griffen to Fremantle, and the injury to Maric, it's opened the door for the likes or Moran and Jacobs to show their stuff, and i was impressed with both these guys tonight.

Preview: Gold Coast vs Adelaide

Gold Coast and Adelaide are set to meet for the first time this weekend.
Gold Coast will not have the services of important ruckman Josh Fraser, while Adelaide go into the match without important midfielder Bernie Vince as well as Ivan Maric.
On paper Adelaide look a little stronger, although the Suns will rightly go into the game feeling like they're a chance. Gold Coast has the stronger ruck division which combined with their midfield advantage is going to make life difficult for the Crows. Tip: Adelaide by 12-24 points.

Gold Coast had the best of it in the first quarter, and went into the break leading by 35 points. Adelaide came out firing in the second quarter. They added 5.3 to Gold Coast's 0.4 in that quarter but still trailed by 6 points going into the main change. Adelaide kept their momentum going throughout the third quarter and extended their lead to 9 points at the final break. The final quarter belonged to Adelaide. Trailing at the final break, they outscored Gold Coast by 10 points in the last quarter to snatch victory 15.13 to 16.6.

For the Gold Coast Daniel Gorringe (22 possessions) battled hard all day.

Coaches Comments: Fantastic result for the football club to come up here to Brisbane and come away with the win. Even though the win was the barest of margin's, it's still 4 points and we are very happy with out start to the season. Our boys were very slow out of the blocks. We need to work on our first quarters, as the Suns just blew us out of the water early on and got a 6 goal lead on us. That's something we need to work on at training and get into the players minds to start matches well. We are certainly finshing matches off well and that's a positive.
Brad Moran was again outstanding for us this afternoon. He was a big bodied in our forward line that marked everything that came his way, he is certainly taking the opportunity while Maric is out of the side, and he is taking it to full advantage. I was very impressed with our clearence work this afternoon, players like Nathan Van Berlo, Patrick Dangerfield (who played more midfield due to the absense of Bernie Vince) and Rory Sloane were all great in the clearences when it counted most. Overall, very happy with the win and happy with the start of the season, except we will miss Scott Thompson for the next 4 weeks with a quad strain.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Adelaide's Full Back, Ben Rutten on playing 150 AFL Games against Hawthorn this weekend. Rutten who was picked up in the rookie draft back in 2001 at pick 40, has certainly become one of the premier backmens in the competition. He is the general with Graham Johncock in the Crows defence and he is a part of the Crows leadership group this season. Rutten has only kicked 6 goals in his 150 matches, kicking the first 3 goals with he's first 3 kicks in AFL footy. Rutten now 28 years of age is one of Adelaide's older players and could be in contention to getting another All-Australian jumper with his oustanding start to the 2011 season.
