Premiership coach 11 - Adelaide Crows

stickerbumperaflcrows.jpg

Hawthorn had the best of it in the first quarter, and went into the break leading by 20 points. Adelaide came out firing in the second quarter, they added 4.3 to Hawthorn's 3.1 in that quarter by still trailed by 12 points going into the main change. Adelaide kept their momentum going throughout the third quarter and extended their lead to 18 points at the final break. The final quarter belonged to Adelade, trailing at the final break they outscored Hawthorn by 8 points in the last quarter, but it wasn't enough. They lost in the end 14.14 to 13.10
For Hawthorn Luke Hodge was outstanding with 41 possessions, while Shaun Burgoyne (34 possessions), Brent Renouf (5 goals) and Sam Mitchell (34 possessions) also contributed strongly. For Adelaide Kurt Tippett (14 possessions) battled hard up forward all day.

Coaches Comments: Again i thought today that we allowed the opposition to get away from us early in the first quarter. They kicked 5.8 in the first term, and it's frustrating as a coach to see such a slow start, and right from the word go, our team is behind and need to play harder football to get ourselves back into the game. Don't get me wrong, we certainly played well and got ourselves back into the game, and only lost the match by 10 points, but if we didn't allow the Hawks to get away early, then the result would of been different. Our first loss of the season, but at the end of the day, i am rather pleased with the way the boys fought back and made a contest out of the match after being blown outta the water early.

MCG: Carlton vs Adelaide

Preview: Carlton vs Adelaide

Carlton and Adelaide have met 29 times throughout their developing history, with Carlton boasting a 51.72% success rate.
Carlton will not have the services of important small defender, Andrew Walker, while Adelaide go into the match without champion midfield Scott Thompson as well as Bernie Vince and Ivan Maric.
On paper Adelaide look a little stronger, although the Blues will righlty go into the game feeling like they're a chance. Carlton has a stronger ruck division which combined with their mideifld advantahe is going to make life difficult for the Crows. Tip: Adelaide by 12-24 points.

Adelaide had the best of it in the first quarter and went into the break leading by 12. Adelaide extended their lead in the second term, adding another 5.2 to go in 29 points up at the main change. Carlton increased their workrate in the third term, outscoring Adelaide 6.2 to 2.2 but still found themselves trailing by 5 points at the final break. The final quarter belonged to Adelaide. They built on the 3/4 time to lead to run out eventual winners by 12 points. 15.11 to 13.11.
For Adelaide, Brent Reily was outstanding with 35 possessions, while Richard Douglas (27 possesions) Patrick Dangerfield (4 goals) and Scott Stevens (19 possessions) also contributed strongly. For Carlton Chris Judd (34 possesions) battled hard all day.

Coaches Comments: I am very happy with the result. Heading to Melbourne and facing the Blues who are a top 4 contender and to come away with the win, is fantastic. We played really well at the MCG which is something we'll need to do if we are going to be playing Finals this season. We as a group worked on our starts to games and i thought the players did exactly what we needed to do, as we got away to a great start, and kept the momentum going throughout the rest of the game. To get the jump early in a match is always important and we kicked away to a 2 goal lead at the first break.
I thought Brent Reilly was outstanding again this afternoon and he is having a brilliant season, another 35 possessions, he is up their with the competition's best so far after 4 rounds. Matthew Jaensch has certainly come out of his shell and is playing some good footy off the half back flank. Another 28 touches today and i can't talk enough about Nathan VanBerlo the captain, another solid game from him and he is leading from the front.
Patrick Dangerfield was solid in the forward 50 kicking 4 goals, while Walker and Tippett proved that they can work in the same forward line, kicking 5 goals between them. Very happy with the result and pretty happy with the start of the season.

Preview: Adelaide vs Sydney

Adelaide and Sydney have met 30 times throughout their developing history with Adelaide boasting a 66.67% success rate
Adelaide go into the match without champion midfielder Scott Thompson, while Sydney go into the match without important tall forward Adam Goodes.
On paper Adelaide look a little stronger, althought the Swans will rightly go into the game feeling like they're a chance. Both sides are pretty evenly matched in the ruck with should allow Adelaide's stronger midfield to give them an advantage. Tip: Adelaide by 12-24 points.

Round 5, Saturday, 16/04/2011
Football Park: Adelaide vs Sydney

Adelaide had the best of it in the first quarter, and went into the break leading by 6 points. Sydney came out firing in the second quarter. They added 4.2 to Adelaide's 3.1 in that term to go into the main change with a handy 1 point lead. Sydney kept their momentum going throughout the third quarter and extended their lead to 1 point at the final break. The final quarter belonged to Adelaide. Trailing at the final break, they outscored Sydney by 13 points in the last quarter to snatch victory 15.11 to 13.11.
For Adelaide Patrick Dangerfield was outstanding with 35 possesions, while Kurt Tippett (16 possesions), Richard Douglas (32 possesions) and Bernie Vince (32 possessions) also contributed stongly. For Sydney Ben McGlynn (27 possessions) battled hard all day.

Coaches Comments: Patrick Dangerfield was sensational for us this afternoon. 35 touches 7 tackles and a goal, Patrick has certainly picked up the pace of the game and is becoming one of our premier midfielders. Patrick was tried as a forward, but we feel that he is more damaging in the midfield. Bernie Vince was good on his comeback game. Richard Tambling was solid in the midfield for us today, picking up 24 touches, in easiest best game for the Crows. Ivan Maric was good on return, picking up 20 touches and having 18 hitouts.
I am very pleased with the win, which puts us right in the mix with 4 wins and 1 loss.

St.Kilda go into the game without any serious injury concerns, while Adelaide will be without champion midfielder Scott Thompson.
On paper St.Kilda are clearly the superior side and it's hard to see the Crows causing them much trouble. St,Kilda has the stronger ruck division which combined with their midfield advantage is going to make life difficult for the Crows. Tip: St.Kilda by 60* points

Round 6, Saturday, 23/04/2011
Docklands: St.Kilda vs Adelaide

Adelaide had the best of it in the first quarter and went into the break leading by 14. St.Kilda came out firing in the second quarter. They added 4.2 to Adelaide's 3.0 in that quarter bu still trailed by 8 points going into the main change. St.Kilda increased their workrate in the third term, outscoring Adelaide 5.2 to 5.1 but still found themselves trailing by 5 points at the final break. The final quarter belonged to St.Kilda. Trailing at the final break they outscored Adelaide by 26 points in the last quarter to snatch victory 18.10 to 15.7
For St.Kilda Nick Riewoldt was outstanding with 4 goals, while Ben McEvoy (21 possessions), Leigh Montagna (28 possesions) and Lenny Hayes (33 possessions) also contributed strongly.
For Adelaide Patrick Dangerfield (30 possesions) battled hard all day.

Coaches Comments: St.Kilda are last year's runners up, and they certainly haven't lost their touch this season. They are certainly a top 4 side, and they just out powered us this afternoon. Riewoldt was hard to stop up forward, as was young Rhys Stanley, as they both kicked 4 goals.
I thought Patrick Dangerfield was again best on ground for us. The youngster is certainy hitting his straps and has played a solid month of football. Matthew Jaensch got plenty of the ball and used it well. Richard Tambling was also impressive, picking up 23 possesions, and had 5 clearences. Taylor Walker was handy down in the forward line as he was our best forward option, and i just think that Kurt Tippett needs to play some better football to keep his place in the side.

St.Kilda: 2.1 - 6.3 - 11.5 - 18.10 (118)
Adelaide: 4.3 - 7.3 - 12.4 - 15.7 (97)

Round 7, Sunday, 1/05/2011
Football Park: Adelaide vs Western Bulldogs

Adelaide had the best of it in the first quarter, and went into the break leading by 13. Footscray came out firing in te second term. They added 5.6 to Adelaide's 2.1 in that term to go into the main change with a handy 10 point lead. Adelaide increased their workrate in the third term, outscoring Footscray 5.2 to 3.3 and built themselves a handy 1 point lead at the final break. The final quarter belonged to Footscray. Trailing at the final break they outscored Adelaide by 16 points in the last quarter to snatch victory 15.12 to 13.9
For Footscray Barry Hall was outstanding with 7 goals, while Ryan Griffen (37 possessions), Justin Sherman (32 possessions) and Adam Cooney (32 possessions) also contributed strongly.
For Adelaide Taylor Walker (7 goals) battled hard all day.

Coaches Comments: We were just out played this evening by a much better side. The Bulldogs had all the run in the last quarter and we just went into a shell while they got a run on. I expected a much better effort in the last quarter after having done all the hard work to be in front at the last change even if it was only the 1 point. We were smashed in the tackles, which means our players weren't hard enough to the man with the ball. Also we were double outscored for hard ball gets, our players were too soft going for the footy and the Dogs were just more hugry for the ball and that's why they won the game.

Adelaide: 5.3 - 7.4 - 12.6 - 13.9 (87)
Western Bulldogs: 3.2 - 8.8 - 11.11 - 15.12 (102)

Round 9, Saturday, 14/05/2011
Kardina Park: Geelong vs Adelaide

Coaches Comments: Geelong are the premier team in the competition still and playing them down at Kardina park is a very tough ask. All of the Geelong stars were firing, and who says that Geelong are nothing without Gary Ablett... honestly they are a better side without him.
We were smashed in the tackles today, and Geelong seemed to be very tough on the ball carrier, they had some grunt about them, which our players didn't have. 73 to 31 tackles for the game just indicates that Geelong do a lot of work when they don't have the ball, and that's something we're gonna have to work on at training to become at the Geelong level with pressure.
Scott Thompson tried hard as usual for us against their star studded midfield. Thompson picked up 31 possesions and kicked a goal for his efforts. I was pretty happy with young Matthew Jaensch through the midfield as well. The kid picked up 25 touches and he had 10 clearences a game high. We had no help for our big forwards, as we had to rely on Jason Porplyzia who kicked 4 goals, the most dominant forward from both teams.
Pretty dissapointed with the result, but it was against the premier team in the competition and we didn't get blown outta the water, so there are some positives from this game.

Geelong: 6.4 - 12. 4 - 14.7 - 16.10 (106)
Adelaide: 3.3 - 5.6 - 9.7 - 13.10 (88)

Goals: CATS: C. Mooney -3, J. Bartel -3, M. Stokes -2, C. Enright -2, P. Chapman -2, C. Ling, A. Mackie, M. Blake, S. Johnson

The "Coach's Comments" are really rather I good. I would recommend introducing a bit more variety into the pre-match and match reports.

I'm not a big fan of this code but this is quite readable. KIU:thumbs.

Bad week for Crows

The Adelaide Crows have had a bad week this week. Their main target in the Forward line, Kurt Tippett has been suspended for a week for a tripping offence against the Cats last weekend. Tippett was charged with a level 3 tripping offence which is as followed.

*225 base penalty points
-56.25 points deducted for good record
-42.19 points for early guilty plea.
Total of 126.56 points which equals to a 1 week suspension

The Crows come up against the Bombers at Football Park this week, and they will now have to rely on Taylor Walker and Brad Moran to be the big targets up forward.
Also the Crows will be without midfielder Richard Douglas who suffered a quad strain at training and will miss 4 weeks, while captain, Nathan VanBerlo also injured himself at training and will miss the following 2 weeks with an ankle sprain. It's a huge blow to loose both Douglas and VanBerlo while Bernie Vince and Chris Knights are also both outta the team.
That's Adelaide's full midfield except for Scott Thompson that will be missing from the Bombers clash.

Some good news for the Crows this weekend against the Bombers. Adelaide utility Scott Stevens will play his 150th AFL game. Stevens has been a great servant for the Crows after crossing from the Swans. Stevens has been solid in defence for the Crows this year, and being that third tall behind Rutten and Phil Davis.
