Welcome to the Adelaide footy club.

Welcome to Adelaide for the upcoming 2011 season.
You have come highly recommended and we look forward to the success that you're bound to bring to the club.
We are expecting the club to push for finals contention this season and will conduct monthly reviews to give feedback on your peformace.
Your current contract expires on 1/11/2012 and given that you're new to the club, we are not willing to enter into extention talks until the end of the season.

Adelaide Season Preview

Adelaide would be expecting the club to push for finals contention this season and have no doubt communicated that to new coach Hayden Sumner after having missed the finals last season.
With Nathan VanBerlo leading the team as captain, and Scott Thompson as his deputy, Adelaide's strength is their midfield with players like Scott Thompson, Bernie Vince and Richard Douglas giving them the advantage around the stoppages.
The club is a power house financially and are hoping for something in the order of 51,000 members this season.

Talia injures himself during preseason.

Wednesday, 9th February 2011
Young Adelaide centre half back, Daniel Talia has broken his ankle in the preseason match against the Eagles in perth on Sunday afternoon. Talia who is expected to miss the next 6 weeks with the foot injury has a setback for his preseason leading into the main season.

Talia at the age of 19 in his second season for the Crows hasn't played a senior game for the club which he was taken at pick 13 in the 2009 National draft. Talia said he was looking forward to pulling the boots on for the Crows for the first time possibly come round 1, but will now need to wait 6 weeks and nurse his broken ankle.

This opens the door for other tall defender, Phil Davis to maybe take the main centre half back role.

Coach Hayden Sumner says it has been a good battle between the two young boys for the number 1 role for the centre half back postion. Both can play the role exceptionally well, and it was hard to see who was going to make that round 1 spot. But it's a huge blow for Daniel and a big blow for the club, as we now need to nurse through the injury and get him right in 6 weeks time.

Round 1: Adelaide vs Richmond
Saturday, 19/03/2011
at Aami Stadium

Round 1 of the Premiership season kicks off with Adelaide and Richmond facing off in at Aami Stadium, on the saturday afternoon. The Crows who will be looking to start the season off with a win with their new coach. The Crows didn't make the finals last season under coach Neil Craig, and needed a change. Richmond also didn't make the finals, just missing out finishing 9th. Both teams are young and have plenty of talent on offer.

Adelaide will be without 2 of their young players, in Daniel Talia and Jack Gunston, while Richmond have no major injuries to their side coming into the first round.
This should be a very intense match, with both sides wanting to win their first match of the year. It will be interesting to see how some of the new players go, for the Crows ex Richmond Richard Tambling has the luck of playing his old team first up in round 1, also Sam Jacobs, the out of favoured ruckman for the Blues gets the nod for the first ruck position against Ivan Maric in the squad for the Crows.

Shaun Grigg who was also a ex Carlton player has been named on the interchange for the Tigers. He will be looking to reinvate his career as a Tiger.

It's good writing and a very promising start, so I wish you all the best with it.

I was just wondering, are there many people here who understand "Aussie Rules"? You might benefit from explaining the abbreviations (for the positions etc.), and maybe working some hints on how the game is played into the story.

In particular, I understand the game, but I have no idea how the draft works, so that part went way over my head.

Round 1: Adelaide vs Richmond

at Aami Stadium

Late replacement needed for the Crows

In the lead up to the game on Saturday against Richmond, Adelaide have declared the Veteran defender, Michael Doughty has injured himself in the clubs final training session before the match.

Michael has suffered a Achillies problem at training, and the club doctor has declared he could miss up to top of 4 weeks. This is a big blow for the club as we are already a defender short with Talia still 4-5 weeks away. But this leaves the door ajar to Tony Armstrong who has been selected off our emergency list to come in for the injured Doughty. Armstrong will start on the bench with Jaensch starting on the ground for the Crows.

Round 1: Adelaide vs Richmond
Saturday, 19/03/2011
at Aami Stadium

Crows find that extra gear

The Adelaide Crows led all afternoon to take away the 4 points in the first match against the Tigers at Aami Stadium. In a high scoring opening quarter, the Crows led at the first change. 13 goals were scored in that first quarter, with Taylor Walker showing off the highlight reel, snapping a bannana goal from the tighest pocket on the ground.
Walker then showed why he is one of the rawest talents in the AFL, dodging and weaving around 3 Richmond defenders to slot home his 3rd goal of the afternoon.

Richmond, through a link up play between Chris Newman and Cotchin through the middle, ended in the arms of Astbury for the quick reply. The second quarter was a little more low scoring and a harder slog. You could tell the players were looking out for the half time siren,as players seemed to be ran off their legs, with the Crows leading by 10 points.
Richmond came out with a big of urgency in their style of play in the third quarter and kicked the first 2 goals, through Jack Riewoldt who had been held pretty quiet by Ben Rutten in the first half. Graham Johncock snuck forward for the Crows to give the home team the answered reply, before the Tigers kicked the last 2 goals of the quarter through Mitch Morton and Jake King. The Crows go into the last change just a goal in front.
The last quarter was a real hard battle between both of the sides, who were both keen on a round 1 victory. Richmond outscored the Crows in the quarter kicking 4.1 to the Crows 3.4, but it was still just enough for the Crows to take the victory, only just though, by 3 points against a very gallant Richmond side.

Influential players

Clearly the Crows captain Nathan VanBerlo was best afield for the winners. VanBerlo amassed with 35 possessions, laid 7 tackles kicked himself a beautiful goal on the run and delivered the ball inside 50 on 7 different occasions.
Kurt Tippett played as the centre half forward, back up ruckman to Jacobs, and Tippett showed why probably he should be more used in the ruck, 34 hitouts Tippett won, compaired to Jacobs who only won the 9. Tippet also had the 18 possessions and kicked 2 goals for the game.

New recruit, Shaun Grigg was outstanding for the Tigers. Grigg had 35 possessions, had 4 clearences and laid 7 tackles for the visitors. He talked on field and gave the younger players a bit of leadership and encouragement. Certainly a great game for his first at Tigerland.

Round 2: Adelaide vs Brisbane
Saturday, 26/03/2011
at Aami Stadium

The Brisbane Lions head to Adelaide, to face the task of playing the Adelaide Crows who had a hard fought win against the Tigers by 3 points last weekend. Brisbane had the hard job of facing the Cats in the first round at the Gabba. Geelong won the match by 16 points, but it was a good fighting effort from the young players of the Lions.

But we turn our heads to Aami Stadium on Saturday. Adelaide's injury list is looking a little more worse with Captain, Nathan VanBerlo now going to miss the next 3 weeks with a achillies injury. Some good news for the Crows though, young defender Daniel Talia should be up and running next week.
Adelaide will go into this match as favourites, with the Lions who are missing Jack Redden for the next 5 weeks, wanting to prove that they are a improved football side. It's going to be a interesting contest over there in Adelaide, but the Crows shoud win.

Round 2: Adelaide vs Brisbane
Saturday, 26/03/2011
at Aami Stadium

Come from behind win for the Crows

The Adelaide Crows have recorded their second consecutive win for the season, coming from behind to snatch the victory off the Brisbane Lions at Aami Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Crows who kicked 11 goals to 2 after half time, rampaged the Lions in the second half to win by 17 points.
The Lions started quickly out of the blocks, kicking a massive 7 goals in the first quarter, with Jonathan Brown kicking the opening 3 goals of the match before the Crows kicked their first. Ben Rutten was finding it hard to obtain the giant from Brisbane, but the Crows steadied with a goal to James Sellar at the 24th minute mark.

Brisbane didn't stop their onslaught their, in the second term, Joanthan Brown kept dominating Ben Rutten and Scott Stevens in the air, kicking his 6th goal before half time, and the Lions added another 5 in that second term, to lead at the main change by 35 points.

But after half time, it was all Adelaide. 6 goals were kicked in the third term for the Crows and some of their bigger names, the likes of Thompson, Reilly and new recruit Richard Tambling turned the game around into the Crows favour. Out of form James Sellar slotted home his second goal of the match, and the Crows come within 7 points of the Lions.

With all the momentum going into the last quarter, Adelaide ran over the top of the Lions in the end, to end up winning the match by 17 points, with many contributors for the day. Crows coach Sumner, says it was a team display out their this afternoon. There were no passagers, everyone did their part, and it's good to have 2 wins from the board after 2 games.

Influential players

New recruit Richard Tambling was outstanding for the Crows this afternoon. The midfielder had his best return for the club, picking up 31 possesions, kicking 2 goals and having 6 clearences. Tambling said after the game that he is enjoying playing for the new club and is given the freedom that he never had down at Tigerland. Tambling played on the wing for the Crows against the Lions, and was able to use his speed and footy brains to run and carry with the ball.

Jonathan Brown was a lone hand up forward for the Lions. Brown, who kicked 7 goals from 11 shots on goal, could have easily finished with 9-10. Brown just didn't have too many team mates on the day that could trouble the scorers, and the captain had to play a lone hand up forward, Easily the Lions best this afternoon.

Round 3: Melbourne vs Adelaide
Saturday, 02/04/2011
at the MCG

Crows in 3 on the trot

The Adelaide Crows have made the perfect start to the 2011 season, with their 3rd consecutive win in a row, winning against the Demons at the MCG on Saturday afternoon by 29 points.
The Crows led by power forwar Taylor Walker, kicked 5 goals in the last quarter to run over the Demons, and pick up the victory. Coach Hayden Sumner says it was the best response after the come from behind win against the Lions a week before, and to again come from behind to win, the team is really starting to build some confidence and have the next 2 weeks are going to be big tests. Adelaide face the Western Bulldogs and Geelong in the next fortnight.

Some say the Crows have had the best dream draw, with the first 3 matches being against lower opposition in the Tigers, Lions and the Demons. But their coach still says, wins are a win, no matter who we play.
The Demons started the game off well, kicking 6 goals in the first term, and still led at half time. But just like the Lions last week, the Demons could only kick 2 goals for the next half, while the Crows kicked 9 to run away winners.
2nd gamer, Brodie Smith was outstanding for the Crows picking up 26 possessions, and Richard Tambling continued his dream start with his new club, with another 31 possession game. Young forward, Taylor Walker had his best return for the club, kicking 6 goals, while other fellow talls, Kurt Tippet (3 goals) and Jack Gunston (2 goals) all stared for the Crows.

Influential Players

Mark Jamar was a lone hand in the ruck for the Demons. Max Gawn the 208cm played more as a forward, and gave Jamar more time in the ruck against Jacobs and Tippett. Jamar played a very good game for the Demons and was rarely beaten in the ruck. Jamar picked up 18 possessions, and had 34 hitouts. Jamar also pushed forward and provided to be a presence in the forward line, being able to kick 2 goals. Jacobs and Tippett couldn't go with the agility of Jamar, and just chased him around all day.

Adelaide had many contributors on the day, and it was hard to pick the best. But the 2nd gamer, Brodie Smith was outstanding for the Crows. Smith who was taken at number 14 in the 2010 draft, picked up 26 possesions and worked his butt off and chased down his opponents. Smith is only a skinny kid, but he has some genuie pace, and his kicking is a skill. Smith delivered the ball inside 50 on 8 different occasions, and it was a outstanding game from the 2nd gamer. He might just even win the rising star nomination this round, something that Adelaide players don't usually feature in.

Young Crow gets nomination for Rising Star

Only in his 2nd game, young Adelaide Crow Brodie Smith has won the Round 3, rising star nomination. The skinny midfielder was very good against the Demons at the MCG.
Smith who played on the wing and stints on the half back flank, racked up 26 posssesions (14 kicks, 12 handballs) 4 tackles, 8 inside 50's. It was a big step in the kid's career, and now could find himself a regular in the Crows 22.

Coach Hayden Sumner is very excited for the youngster and says that his hard preseason is resulting in the kid getting his chance at AFL level. We picked Brodie up at number 14 in last years draft, and even back then, we knew he could play at AFL level. He had a big preseason, although he certainly needs a few seasons in the gym to bulk up a little.

Round 4: Adelaide Vs Western Bulldogs
Sunday, 09/04/2011
at Aami Stadium

Sunday afternoon brings Adelaide Vs Western Bulldogs at Aami Stadium. The Crows, who have won their past 3 matches, against the Tigers, Brisbane and last weekend against the Demons are in great form and haven't made a change to their side. The Crows coach Hayden Sumner, says that he has got his team playing some good high scoring football, something the Crows supporters didn't see last season under coach Neil Craig. In each match we have played, we have reached the ton, so we are a high scoring team. We're a young side, that is going to just keep improving. This weeks task is a big one though, against the Western Bulldogs, who even though have lost 2 matches and have had the bye, are still a danger side.

Round 4: Adelaide Vs Western Bulldogs
Sunday, 09/04/2011
at Aami Stadium

Bulldogs too strong in Adelaide

The Western Bulldogs have won their first match of the 2011 season against a Crows side who had won their first 3 matches. The Bulldogs beat the Crows at Aami Stadium on Saturday afternoon by 28 points. The Crows who had wins against the Tigers, Brisbane and Melbourne in the first 3 rounds, came up against a quality side in the Dogs who needed to get their season back on track, with the first 2 losses before they had the bye.
The Game was a hard fought close game. The margin never blew out to more then 18 points in the first 3 quarters, when the Dogs who led by 10 points leading into the last quarter and we thought maybe we had a close finish on our hands. The Dogs through Justin Sherman (33) and Callan Ward (33 possessions) ran away with the win, kicking 5.2 to the Crows 2.2 in the last quarter.

Crows coach Hayden Sumner said he was pretty dissapointed with the way the boys played this afternoon. We we're just really woeful with our disposal. How can we lead in, Handballs, Tackles, Hitouts, Clearences, Hard ball gets and Rebounds, yet still loose the match just under 5 goals? Really.. it was a dissapointing game from our players, and we will address the issues that came from this match. It was really dissapointing considering our great start to the season. We will need to work on our disposal, because you can't expect to lead in most categories at the end of the game and still loose like that.

Influential Players

Arguably one of the best full backs of the modern era, Ben Rutten was again great for the footy club in their round 4 loss to the Bulldogs at Aami Stadium. The 28 year old, played on one of the best full forwards going around in Barry Hall, and kept Hall pretty quiet. Rutten who was a rookie draft pick at number 40 back in the 2001 pre season draft, has played 152 games for the Crows. Rutten had 22 possessions (14 kicks, 8 handballs), took 6 uncontested marks, 11 rebounds and 14 spoils for the match. One of the more experienced players in the Crows squad certainly led the way from the front today.

The new Bulldog recruit Justin Sherman was outstanding for the Dogs. Sherman who has found a spot in a already star studded Bulldogs midfield, picked up 33 possesions (16 kicks, 17 handballs) had 5 tackles, kicked 2 goals, and delivered the ball inside forward 50 on a staggering 14 different occasions. He is certainly the general in the Bulldogs midfield to be able to deliver the ball to forwards like Murphy, Hall and Giansiracusa. A all in all outstanding match from Sherman which helped his team get over the line.

The Next four
