Question from a baseball fan...

BTW, speaking of baseball, I found a picture on the Surrey CC website of a cricket coach catching a cricket ball with a baseball catcher's mitt! I know that using any kind of protective gear for the hands is frowned upon, except for the keeper, but when cricket players practice and warm up their throwing arms before a game (and I assume they do), then do they borrow baseball equipment to protect their hands for the real thing?

They use baseball mitts for training purposes so the coaches and trainers can catch high speed throws from professional cricketers without hurting themselves. Its pretty common I think.

Hey Bob! Welcome to Planet Cricket. Did you know that Canada and the U.S. played the first ever cricket international? Something for you to brag about. In this season's baseball I'm tossing up between the Cubs (gotta love a choke) and the Jays (I went to one of their games one time). But then there's the Brewers. Any team named after beer making has to be a top pick.
Root for the Kiwis and then you'll learn to hate us Aussies. But they're a pretty good jumping off point. They'll give anyone a run for their money and there's nothing they like better than beating Australia. They're a funny mob.

A friend of mine once bought tickets to a Milwaukee game and spent half the time tailgating in the parking lot :) Their mascot also goes down a slide into a giant beer mug whenever one of their players hits a homerun :)

Glad to hear there's another Cubs fan out on the site here! If you ever get a chance to see another Major League Baseball game, try to see one at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Great old-fashioned atmosphere. The Seattle Mariners are my other favorite team, and they have an Aussie pitcher, Ryan Roland-Smith (and there's an Australian on the Philadelphia team that won the World Series last fall).

I think I finally decided on the NZ'ers because they're underdogs... Such a smaller population than Australia or India or England.

Marlins are gonna win surely?!

I bought MLB09: The Show the other day, hasn't arrived yet.

Just to tell you that cricket games are not very good and aren't a very good representation of the real thing. Although I heard TAOC was going to be good.

Oh great Cubs fans.

Just to clarify, I'm from Chicago but hate the Cubs with a passion.

Not hugely into it anymore. Was big into it all the way up to 2006 and then lost interest little by little. Have been to a few White Sox games as well.

Looking at current cricket crisis Bob you should support Pakistan.. :)

I've watched one baseball game and I actually really enjoyed it. Like it went up to around the 13th innings and I really felt the tension(I've forgotten what the teams were). I just picked a team and went for them. Don't really know what all the hate is about though. Cricket is still miles better. ;)

George Washington loved cricket and thats why US head of states are called Presidents because I think it was John Adams said in congress "If heads of cricket clubs can be called Presidents their is no reason why the head of this country can't be"

Yeah, it's for throwing practice, you can even buy baseball mitts in cricket shops. As for catching, you tend to not think about broken fingers when you practice, but I have seen small football gloves from time to time, probably to protect a recently injured finger or hand.

I really do wonder if there's a source for this.

Interest in Sport
Although the sport of cricket is not a common interest in modern America, it has been popular in the past. It is well understood from anecdotal evidence that George Washington was a strong supporter of cricket, participating at least one occasion in games of cricket with his troops at Valley Forge during the Revolution. This is a sporting passion that other presidents have shared, such as Abraham Lincoln.

If any of you guys watch QI on the Series B DVD extra "Banter" section John Lloyd mentions GW's passion for Cricket.

I don't doubt that at all. I was just wondering if there is a source for the statement you made about how the title President was chosen.

LOL... Love the poster! I know they still lose a lot, but how can anyone HATE the Cubbies? :)

I still prefer baseball more, but I think cricket is going to be my #2. It's loads better than basketball or american football. I think that indoor cricket or southern hemisphere cricket would have great shots at acceptance in the US if they were marketed as a sort of off-season baseball for baseball-starved fans who don't like American football (like me). You remember the marketing campaign for the Austin Powers sequel? It was being released in summer '99, and they knew that the big movie everyone was anticipating was the first Star Wars prequel, so Michael Myers' people came up with the slogan: [deep male movie advertisement voice] "If you see ONE movie this summer, see STAR WARS... But if you see TWO movies this summer, see AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY THAT SHAGGED ME."

That's what indoor or international cricket could say to market the sport here in the United States. "If you follow ONE sport, follow BASEBALL... But if you follow TWO sports, follow baseball and CRICKET..."
