Why were they banned in the first place

IIRC, it was due to some racist comments towards Basil Oliveira(if thats his name), who was a fantastic black S.African by birth but played for England; by the South African government.

They were allowed to play international cricket only after Nelson Mandela who was then imprisoned in South Africa was released.

Why were they banned in the first place?

In 1970, the ICC voted to suspend South Africa from international cricket indefinitely because of its government's policy of apartheid, an overtly racist policy, which led them to play only against the white nations (England, Australia, New Zealand), and field only white players.
The rest is explained by Blitzberg and Colin.:)

I've got zero knowledge about cricket's history. I can only name all the World Cup winners correctly and that's all about it lol.
