Grace's swing was too much for Lions
WG Grace took 6 wickets in Surrey's chase getting one of the key wickets in Greame Pollock.

Pollock never looked like getting a score making only 26 of 72 balls.

Lillie was brilliant with the new ball knocking off Hobbs caught at short leg and then clean bowling captain Viv Richards with an beautiful inswinger that got through his defences.

Patel was the only one to make a contribution with 45 of 44 balls then getting caught behind being Grace's 5th victim.

Man of the Match presentation

What a great win for Worcestershire defeating the defending champions in the first match also without Harmison.

Ian Ward is doing the man of the match presentation.

Ward: Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the man of the match presentation.
We will announce the man of the match in a momment but first can the Surrey captain Viv Richards come forward please.
Viv not the start you wanted as the defending champions?

V Richards: No we didn't play our best cricket but give a lot of credit to Worcester they played well in all departments and our guys couldn't stand up to it.

Ward: Lillie and Grace bowled well in both innings?

V Richards: Yeah they bowled beautifully when Dennis bowled me with that inswinger I couldn't see it until it was too late, they also made runs as well which we could of done without so full credit to them.

Ward: Do you think that you can bounce back quickly for the next game?

V Richards:
We can, we'll look at our flaws and correct them.

Ward: Good Luck Viv

V Richards: Thank you

Ward: Ladies and gentlemen the Surrey captian Viv Richards.
Now can the Worcestershire captian Sunil Gavaskar come forward for a few words.
Sunil the guys bowled well in the 4th innings to restrict Surrey to 143

Gavaskar
: Yeah the team played well all match, we knew we had to bowl well to win and guys did that today and yesterday.

Ward: Well there was always someone who stood out in all departments in that game, you must be happy to start the season with everyone contributing.

Gavaskar: Yes beating champions is big step and we need to keep consistancy if we want to win because there are tough teams this season and everyone must perform.

Ward:
Well you've shown that in this game, good luck.

Gavaskar: Thank you very much.

Ward: Everybody the Worcestershire captian Sunil Gavaskar:
ok its time for the man of the match

Barry Richards and Juyasuria both made century's
and Dennis Lillie made 50 runs and took 9 wickets
but our man of the match as voted by sky sports viewers
for making 52 runs and then taking 8 wickets in the match including
6 wickets in the 4th innings is.......
WG Grace
He will get a bottle of wine and a check for ?1000.
WG wuld you please come up here.

Ward: you look surprised to get this man of the match award.

Grace: Yeah mate I though Dennis should have it.

Ward: Watching from the commentry box you look in fanatsic form with bat and ball and your holding your catches when they come too.

Grace: Yeah I'm happy to start the season on a high note and to beat the defending champions with a tough team and then get man of the match is fantastic for me.

Ward: I know it's early days but if you and Worcester keep this up your on track to win

Grace: It is early days but have form we just have to keep it.

Ward: Thanks for having a chat with us.

Grace: No problem.

WG Grace the man of the match and that concludes our man of the match presentation see you next time.

55533.icon.jpg

England and Worcestershire fast bowler Stephan Harmison who was out of the Frizzell County championship match from illness returns to face Lancashire.

Harmison: I caught a sickness and diaria bug but the physio says I'm going to be 100 percent for the next game.

Gavaskar: Steve is a crucial part of our bowling attack, he has the pace of and is good to have him back.

Worcestershire Vs Lancashire

Collville:Lancashire captain Imran Khan and Worcestershire captain Sunil Gavaskar
are out in the middle to toss the coin

Collville:Gavaskar tosses
Imran calls tails
its a tail so Imran you've won the toss what are you going to do?

Imran: We'll bat first Charles, the wicket looks nice and bouncy and the ball looks like it will come on to the bat.

Collville: Well you have Nathan Astle back in the squad, if he gets in he my get you a score.

Imran: Yes its great to have Nate back in the side,
He is aggressive as a batsmen and a useful medium pace bowler,
we just hope to get big score on board and put them under pressure.

Collville: Well Sunil your bowling, do you mind a bowl?

Gavaskar We would of chose to bat if we won but wicket has a bit of grass on it so we don't mind bowling too much.

Collville: Well Steve Harmison is back in the side so you do have a lethal weapon bowling first.

Gavaskar: Yes Steve is gives us pace and bounce, if he and Dennis made ball talk and take early wickets then we can tie them down to a chaseable score.

Collville: Well good luck Sunil

Lancashire destroyed by opening bowlers

Lancshire were bowled out for 28 in just 31.3 overs.

None of Lancashire's batsmen got into double figures as Harmison and Lillie Got a tonne of swing with the new ball

Lancashire fell apart when openers Nathan Astle and AB De Villlias got out.

Captain Imran Khan went for a duck when he got a beautiful inswing that knocked his middle stump out.

Razzaq, Hall, Ntini and McGrath went for ducks as well.

Fleming and Astle were both dropped in the slips in the same Harmison over 1st by Ervine at 2nd slip and then by Jayasuriya a 1st slip

Both were then caught in the slips an over after each other

Fleming caught by Grace at 3rd slip off Harmison and then Astle was caught behind off Lillie

Lancashire are going to need a miricle to get back in this game

McGrath stars but Worcestershire did enough to win

Austraila fast bowler Glenn McGrath took 4-76 from 18.1 overs.

Worcester had intent to keep the scorers moving with quick singles but cost 3 runouts
one of which dismissed the captain Sunil Gavaskar who survived the brutal Imran Khan who was bowlng over 90 mph got to 35 and got runout trying to take a quick single,

wickets tumbled after that
with Laxman, Ervine and Jacobs falling in succession

The only person to make a reasonable contribution was WG Grace
he made 52 before getting caught behind by Imran Khan.

Imran bowled better than his figures suggest,
he bowled quick, and accurate and found a lot of swing as well.

Harmison got the team past 150 before getting run out to Glenn McGrath.
