You aren't really going to compare mcmillan and klusenar to mcclaren?? Both of them were much better batsmen than mcclaren. They were in the side for the package they provided. McClaren is in no shape or form even close to them in terms of batting.
No i wasn't comparing McLaren to McMillan & Klusener at all.
I was comaparing the balance of the Saffies attack in the 90s to the one they could play now.
In which you ahd the two main new-ball bowlers in Donald/Pollock in the 90s. Just like how you have Steyn/Morkel now. In the 90s those two where backed up by quality all-rounders seamer such a McMillan/Klusener.
Currenly you can do the same thing by picking McLaren/Kallis to back up Steyn/Morkel.
McLaren is very capable batsman i'd say. I think he is very capable of scoring test hundreds as well. I saw alot oh him in county cricket over the past 2 years & i've always been impressed.
As to the second part. Reasons why they will stick with parnell above de wet.
1.De wet is very close to 30.
I dont see why De Wet being close to age 30 should be an issue. Australia debuted Stuart Clark @ age 31 & look how well he served AUS for 3 years.
2. It takes a lot to come back from a stress fracture. Doing it twice is going to very hard for him.
The stress fracture is a different issue. If he indeed struggles to come back from it, then of course you can't pick him. But if he is fit, then De Wet has to play since he is Saffies best quick for tests behind Steyn/Morkel.
3.Parnell has always been groomed as a future SA star/captain since his time in the youth setup. Even when he has occasionally struggled in the odi's they have stuck with him.
In ODIs he has indeed had some struggles. But they can't hide IN an ODI since SA have so much bowling options. They can't hide him in a test match as we saw in India recently, his inffectiveness will give Steyn & co more work to do. He clearly is not ready for tests ATS.
4. Better batsmen compared to de wet , gives balance to the side.
His batting really shouldn't be relevant at all.
5. Offers variety to a bowling attack being a left armer.
He doesn't do anything with the red ball. Doesn't swing it coventionally or reverse. He is straight up down. So that fact that his is left-arm ATS, doesn't mean anything.
6. Has the qouta advantage. Might be irrelevant to most cricket discussion but in the SA context it does matter especially with ntini's decline.
Panell is coloured??.Haa damn i looks pretty white to me.
But anyway if he is indeed "cloured", yes this could be an issue. But a potentially full-strenght SA test team will have a fair amount of coloured players:
Smith
Petersen
Amla
Kallis
De Villiers
Prince
Boucher
Steyn
Harris/
Tahir
Morkel
De Wet
You would have 4 definite coloured players starting. With the posibility of Tahir replacing Harris year end to make it 5.
