Spot Fixing Scandal Thread: The Legend Continues

Mohammad Amir on how he felt when he bowled a no ball: "Horrible. Inside I was cursing myself. I knew it was unfair to cheat. Cheating is cheating. I knew I was cheating but I was worried about if I didn't do it. I was confused."

When asked if he bowled no-balls not for money - but because he thought he was in trouble for texts to Ali - Mohammad Amir replied: "Absolutely! To cheat in this way is futile. No-one has ever taught me to behave in such a manner." Amir adds: "Butt and Majeed told me I was in trouble for the texts. I am so angry with Salman, he took advantage of our friendship. He should have helped me instead of involving me in all this."

Mohammad Amir has spoken for the first time since his release from prison for spot-fixing. Speaking to Sky Sports he said: "It's a very difficult time but I have support good people are boosting my morale. I have good people with me. Prison is not a good place for anyone and nobody would feel proud being there but I was treated really well in there."

Err, so yeah, that's three quotes that basically all mimic what people expected to be said.

Was going to make a separate thread for this. Good interview. I think most people who followed the case closely saw that Amir was pushed into it but it is no excuse for his crimes. He admitted he deserved the punishment and for me that is a great step forward. He did man up.

This is extremely hard to watch... why? because he is lying through his teeth. He should have just accepted that he accepted the money and became greedy... its a normal human condition.... but if he keeps on lying, I don't have any respect for him. He should stay a thousand miles away from the team. Don't want him back.

Any anyone who thinks that he is not lying.. then unfortunately, I think you are either extremely naive or disillusioned.

I feel sorry for him. I was let down as he was one of my favorite cricketers but it's nice to finally hear this, if anything, to get some closure. I hope to see him playing again. He made a mistake and I hope and feel he has learned from it.

I understand Hindi/Urdu, but for those that don't, the subtitles aren't fully in sync with the audio.

In some ways I feel sorry for him yes definitely, but in other ways I'm with Stinky - he sounds like a wimp. The way he was talking about Salman Butt made it sound like Butt was Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious, or a mob boss, mysteriously sitting silent in the back seat of the car, almost 'forcing' Amir to bowl no-balls. Which is rubbish - he could have told Butt where to go, but he handed over his bank details when he was asked. Very nieve and impressionable, even plain stupid - I think Amir was certainly deserving of a suspension.

To be fair, he did say as much in the interview. He even said he was deserving of punishment.

People have to understand that Aamir has come from a very humble background. But I don't buy the fact that he did fixing only because he feared getting dropped. He got greedy, plain and simple. All this rise to fame and fortune was a bit too quick for him and he just could not handle himself like a mature player would have. Lack of education did not help him either.
I think PCB will try and rescue his international career with help from outside of Pakistan. Some former international players seem to like him a lot and should be quite interested in early reinstatement of Aamir. With our dwindling resources of Fast bowling, our board may also getting increasingly interested in resumption of Aamir's career. All this may still not bear fruit but lets all wait and see. I personally would prefer to see him complete his five year ban.

He did admit he was stupid, but he was an 18 year old kid being manipulated by his captain (if you believe him). Do you think he will play for Pakistan?

That's not the impression I got. After watching that interview, I can empathize with him to a certain extent. I don't know who this Ali guy was, but it's not hard to imagine how Butt and Majeed could have convinced an 18 year old kid that you are in trouble with the ICC and we can help you out. You've got to remember that Aamir had complete trust in Butt - he keeps referring that since the beginning, Butt treated him like a little brother. He was away from his family, learning to cope with his new-found fame, and dealing with the the whole Ali situation. And if all he got was ?1500 compared to the ?8000 he had lying around from the matches, I don't think he did it for the money. Call me naive, but I believe him :p

And he has said that despite whatever, he still did commit foul and accepts his punishment. And he's apologized. I'm with Shravi on this, that interview did give me some closure.

Another interesting thing was that he hinted he's not sure if he does want to come back to cricket again. He knows he was stupid, and seems to have matured a bit during his time in jail.

I probably should watch the interview before passing comment on it.

but hey, I pass comment on cricket matches without watching them all the time and that almost never back fires

Even if he did, would he get visas when playing abroad? He certainly wouldn't get one for the UK and don't UAE have fairly strict rules on criminal records and visas, even if said criminal activity didn't take place there?
