Well Sri Lankan coach Matt West surprised us all with this 20/20, and the opponents were Bermuda, who were making their international 20/20 debut.
The match is in Kandy, with 35+ degree heat, anyway back to the action. Siriles captain for the game Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and elected to bat on a dusty surface. The pitch was perfect for spin bowling and with Murali in their artillery it looked like a good decision.
Here is the Sri Lankan team for the game:
It was a strong looking side
As Kumar and Sanath walked out to the middle they were welcomed with a courteous and loud applause from the 6,000 fans packed into the ground. Sri Lanka were expected to win easily.
The first runs of the day came with Hurdle bowling a back of the length ball, Sangakarra dropped onto the back foot and over the infield for 2 runs. The question was who was going to attack, both, one or neither???
Hurdle looked angry with himself after that delivery and followed it up with a bouncer which surprised Kumar and hit him on the head, after attempting a big pull shot.
He was knocked down to the deck and looked wearily around the ground. Hurdle sniggered to himself as he trudged back to his mark. Perhaps it wasn't going to be as easy as first intended.
Kumar after that knock was looking to gain back the momentum, and he certainly did with a massive signature backfoot drive over the top for 4. After an eventful first over the score was 7 runs without loss.
At the other end spin was used, a stupid option?? Well it wasn't...really as only 7 came off the over, but Sanath played a cut shot that went steaming to the boundary literaly like a bullet.
Hurdle came back in looking for revenge, but he didn't get it as Kumar smacked him neatly down the track for 4. The Sri Lankans a healthy 21 for 0 after 3. But the next over was a biggie as Sanath delighted mananged to wallop Levecrock for 4, after using the pace of the ball. Before using his power to come down the track and hit a fireball for 6.
Things didn't get much better for the Bermudans, well they were hit for 10 off the next over, as Kumar had faced a brilliant over, he decided to hit the last two balls for consecutive fours. 5 overs gone 39 without loss.
Kumar had moved onto 24 with 5 fours and Sanath onto 11.
Sanath took the attack to the bowlers in the next 5 overs as he managed to dispatch them for another 2 fours and 2 sixes. The first 6 managed to go to the back row in the small Kandy stands, but the 3rd was a wopper as he went over cow corner, dispatching the ball out of the ground.
Kumar hadn't scored a run in the last 4 overs, although he had only faced 2 balls, and was looking to follow Sanath's big hitting but he only managed to pick the man out on the fence who was waiting for the big shot, Kumar gone bowled Cann caught Tucker.
In came the capatain who managed to get 4 off his first 3 balls, but the next 10 overs would tell just how a good a coach West was. The two looked well set, join us later to see how they faired....
Sanath has played a great knock so far being 40 not out with 3 fours and 3 sixes, and looks well set to go for a biggie
Sri Lanka 1/78 off 10 overs
Jayasuriya 40*
Jayawardene 4*
