2nd Test: England vs Sri Lanka

Day 2: Tea: Fernando's brilliance triggers collapse...

The English innings had started off chanceless before Tea, and the Sri Lankan bowlers, who were looking for an early wicket were denied by Trescothick and Strauss.

After Tea, however, Fernando caused trouble the moment he got a hold of the ball. Strauss, a normally free scoring batsman, struggled to reach 19 off 74 balls, and this struggle was ended by Dilhara Fernando, catching him playing back on the crease, the ball hitting under the knee roll of Strauss' pads. Trescothick, continued his dominance, when he played past a brilliant 50. Fernando struck again, in similiar fashion to the Strauss dismissal, Trescothick missing the ball by the tiniest of margins, when he was on 69 runs off 127 balls.

Pietersen came in, and played defensively after the fall of two quick wickets. But being the run machine that he is, he could not stand it any longer, and tried to loft Dilhara Fernando over long on, but the shot didn't have enough power, Atapattu taking the simplest of catches, KP heading back for just 3. Next in line was Ian Bell, who played a pivotal role in the 1st Test with a courageous 211. He lasted for just 6 balls, when he was deceived by a slower ball from Fernando, and ended up lobbing the ball back to the bowler, Bell heading back for just 1 run.

Michael Vaughan needed to play an important innings to save England from their worrying position, especially with Andrew Flintoff edging, a short delivery from Vaas to Sangakkara on just 7. Vaughan, and wicket keeper Prior, played to Tea on Day 2, with a few nervous moments here and there.

Michael Vaughan (24no off 41) and Prior (11no off 25) saw England off to the safety of Tea, with the score at 139/5 off 50 overs.

2nd Test: England vs Sri Lanka

End of Day 2: Simon Jones rushed to hospital...

This session was probably the worst of the series for England, and it started off badly with the wicket of England skipper Michael Vaughan. Vaughan just faced 3 ball from Vaas after Tea, the 3rd resulting in a ball which flicked the edge and crashed into the stumps, dismissed for 24. Prior, at the other end, continued to try and hold the innings together, but Chaminda Vaas struck an even more damaging blow.

Simon Jones was facing his 15th delivery, with his score on 2. Chaminda Vaas hit the deck with a spearing bouncer, and Jones could not move out the way, and was struck hard in the ribs. Simon Jones, obviously hurt, struggled to get up, as the Physio and medical staff rushed onto the field. Most likely a minor/mild fracture of the ribs, Simon Jones retired hurt, and was taken to hospital in an ambulance. The nature of the fracture or the period of recovery unknown, Simon Jones will most likely be fit by the ODI series, but if he is lucky, he may be able to play the 5th and last Test Match.

Anthony Davies came in to slog a 6 off Zoysa's bowling over the mid wicket fence, but Zoysa struck back, trapping Davies lbw for 11 off 10 balls. Prior managed to reach 33 off 87 balls, before he edged Muralitharan to Sangakkara, Muralitharan having an average series so far.

The score at Stumps on Day 2 is England, 191/8 off 70 overs. Harmison is not out on 12, and Hoggard is not out on 3 off just 1 delivery.

2nd Test: England vs Sri Lanka

Day 3: Lunch: Sri Lanka struggle...

It took just 4 balls to get the final wicket, Fernando claiming a 5 wicket haul (5/75), his 2nd in the series, when Harmison (12) edged the ball to wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara. England were allout for 191 off 70.4 overs.

Despite Simon Jones out of the match due to injury, England did not leave Sri Lanka off the hook. Kapugedera was the first to go, after he slammed a 4 past the bowler. Harmison bowled a screamer, clocked at 158.7km/h, which crashed into the offstump, Kapugedera out for only 7. Attapatu then faced just 2 balls to make 1, playing an uppish drive back to the bowler, Matthew Hoggard.

Jayasuriya, who looked confident with three 4's, mistimed a shot that flew to square leg, and he was out to pace bowler Anthony Davies on 20 off 34 balls. Davies then struck again, when hit the toes of Jayawardene (8 off 29), an easy lbw decision.

It was left to Sangakkara (22no off 40) and Samaraweera (20no off 43) to see Sri Lanka to safety, the score at Lunch on Day 3, 79/4 off 27 overs.

Sri Lanka, despite struggling, have a very handy 248 run lead, but if England pull off a 2nd innings performance like the one in the 1st Test, then Sri Lanka will need to pile on more runs to be safe.

2nd Test: England vs Sri Lanka

Day 3: Tea: Samaraweera and Dilshan pile on the runs...

England at first, did not have to wait long for yet another wicket. Sangakkara managed to add 9 runs to his score to get to 29, a good start, but was taken by surprise by a skidding delivery from Andrew Flintoff, the balls hitting his front pad, Sangakkara dismissed lbw for 29. At this stage, England still had a chance, but a big partnership between Samaraweera and Dilshan took their hopes away of bundling Sri Lanka out for a poor score.

Samaraweera nudged the singles, in a mix if scintillating 4's, as he kept a good strike rate and passed a well played 50. Dilshan, on the other hand, had periods of slow scoring, peaked with powerful shots here an there, and he too managed to reach 50, as their partnership went above 100. The English bowlers could not cause any trouble, and the abscence of a spinner started to take it's toll.

At Tea on Day 3, Samaraweera (79no off 128) and Dilshan (54no off 88) were at the crease with the score at 204/5 off 58 overs, a big lead of 373 runs.

2nd Test: England vs Sri Lanka

End of Day 3: Sri Lanka set England 443 to win...

England's hopes of surviving this Test match took a big nose dive, despite all their efforts. Sri Lanka, who had begun with a big lead, continued to tick the scoreboard over. Samaraweera did not stay too long after Tea, when he was bowled by a Harmison yorker on 84. Dilshan made use of precious time, as he blasted as many runs as he could in the presence of the tail, Vaas staying in for 25 balls to make 7 runs, before he was trapped leg before by Hoggard.

Fernando slogged a 4, but was bowled by Hoggard for no more runs. Muralitharan had fun, scoring 19 runs off 22 balls, before he bowled by Anthony Davies trying to slog sweep. The final wicket came with Flintoff bowling Nuwan Zoysa for 2, leaving Dilshan not out for 84 off 150 balls.

Sri Lanka's 2nd Innings ended up allout for 273 off 80 overs, setting England a mammoth target of 443.

England only had to play 4 overs before Stumps on Day 3. The England score at the End of Day 3 was 11/0 off 4 overs, Trescothick 3no off 14 balls, and Strauss 8no off 10 balls.

2nd Test: England vs Sri Lanka

Day 4: Lunch: England crumble under the pressure...

The task set by Sri Lanka was always going to be too big for England and they just could not handle the pressure. The 1st wicket came at 29/1, Andrew Strauss failing to impress yet again, the 2nd time this match that he was out for lbw on 16, this time to Chaminda Vaas. Trescothick made yet another start, a trend in this series so far, but he made a meal of it, when he drove Fernando straight to Sanath Jayasuriya, to be out for 35. Fernando has so far loved bowling at the English.

Pietersen also made a start, beginning with a casual push down the ground for 4. Ian Bell, one of England's heroes in the last test, failed to make an impact, unable to comprehend a doosra from Muralitharan which struck his pads, and he was out lbw for 11.

Pietersen was the next casualty, out for 33 of 62, edging Dilhara Fernando to Kumar Sangakkara. England's chances now looked terribly grim.

At Lunch on Day 4, Vaughan (12no off 25) and Flintoff (0no off 4) are at the crease, with the score at 109/4 off 36 overs.

2nd Test: England vs Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka win by 287 runs, as England are bundled out for 155...

If Sri Lanka had the advantage in the last test match, they were on top of the world in this game. The inevitable came quickly, the loss made more sudden and explosive by the Sri Lankans. Moody complained that they did not play as a team in the 1st Test, but they played as a tight organised, and resurgent unit this time around.

As Michael Vaughan battled on for pride, Flintoff struggled to reach 7 runs off 32 balls, and just gave up, misitming a defensive which shot back to the bowler, part timer Dilshan. Prior then looked as confident as a tail ender in the Bodyline series, playing a horrible defensive poke, only edging Muralitharan to Sangakkara when he was on 1. Next was Anthony Davies, who played a shot towards mid on when he was on 3, only for the cricketing world to gasp in awe as Chaminda Vaas pulled of possibly one of the best caught and bowled dismissal.

Vaas, dived full stretch to his right as soon as ball touched bat, and dived a distance to pluck the ball out of the air, and hold it in between two fingers. Vaas then bowled Harmison for a duck, and Vaughan finally was dimissed on 38 off 93 balls, when he top edged a sweep against Dilshan into the hands of Jayasuriya.

England were bundled out for a meagre 155 off 61.5 overs, the Sri Lankans claiming a big 287 run win.

Thilan Samaraweera earned Man of the Match for scores of 57 and 84, although Dilhara Fernando or Dilshan may have been more deserving.

Sri Lanka now lead the 3-match Test Series 2-0, (in some parts of the story, I have accidentally labeled the series a 5 test match series) and England will atleast want a consolation win. The 3rd Test Match begins at Trent Bridge on the 2nd of June.

Atapattu says Sri Lanka is rising, and England is losings its way...

In the post-match press conference, Atappatu was in a joyous mood, and labeled his side as a resurgent unit, which can take on the World's best.

"It has been a great campaign so far. After initial failures in past years, we are happy to get back to winning ways. We have found a world class bowler in Dilhara Fernando, and batsmen such as Jayawardene, Sangakkara, Samaraweera have shown their worth. Tillakaratne Dilshan has showed the qualities of a budding allrounder"

The Sri Lankan captain hinted that after the Series in the bag, they would try out a few youngsters in the fianl Test match if Team Management saw it fit.

"We currently are looking at players such as spinner Malinga Bandara, all rounder Russell Arnold, and pace bowlers Ruchira Perera and Kulasekera. It will be an exciting prospect to see this players in action"

Attapatu came down hard on the English team.

"England certainly showed that they were top class in the Ashes, but they have gone downhill from there, starting with defeat in Pakistan. I think we are seeing England as they were during 2000-2004"

Since exams are coming up, im going to update my story less regularly for around 2 weeks. Sorry about that...
