Innings 1, New Zealand

New Zealand ? 75/1 (Day 1, 2:31 PM)
Overs: 38
Last Wicket: Fleming c. Jayawardene b. Maharoof 17 ( 43/1 )

Sinclair (37)
Styris (21)

Muralitharan (0/25 in 9 Overs)
Jayasuriya (0/1 in 1 Overs)

New Zealand are slow but steady. 19 runs have been put up since lunch break and they haven?t shown any signs of aggressiveness. They have been progressing the match with a steady run rate of 2 per over. While Sinclair takes ones and twos, Styris hits the occasional four and climbs up to reach Sinclair.

Innings 1, New Zealand

New Zealand ? 106/1 (Day 1, 3:24 PM)
Overs: 50
Last Wicket: Fleming c. Jayawardene b. Maharoof 17 ( 43/1 )

Sinclair (49)
Styris (40)

Chandana (0/24 in 13 Overs)
Maharoof (1/28 in 13 Overs)

The tension has mounted up high. Both Sinclair and Styris are in their fourties and are expected to hit their half-centuries before tea. The spinners were bowling well, until the last few overs when the batsmen began to take singles regularly. Maharoof was brought back instead of Jayasuriya probably with the hope of taking another wicket.

Tea

Innings 1, New Zealand

New Zealand ? 112/1(Day 1, 4:00 PM)
Overs: 54
Last Wicket: Fleming c. Jayawardene b. Maharoof 17 ( 43/1 )

Sinclair (52)
Styris (43)

Chandana (0/25 in 14 Overs)
Vaas (0/4 in 5 Overs)

Sinclair does it. He has finally crossed his 50 before Tea. A slow steadily paced innings, It in fact took him 153 balls to score 52 runs.

On the other side, Skipper Jayasuriya seems to be running out of bowlers to bowl, spare the wicket of Fleming and the Sri Lankan bowlers have not managed to pick up another breakthrough.

File size for Highlights is 1.9 Mb [ I think ]. Congrats to Sinclair on his fifty. New Zealand have stated that, they will try to be a little quicker now.

Innings 1, New Zealand

New Zealand ? 140/2 (Day 1, 4:52 PM)
Overs: 65
Last Wicket: M. Sinclair b. Chandana 63 ( 134/1 )

Cairns (3)
Styris (57)

Chandana (1/39 in 20 Overs)
Maharoof (1/29 in 14 Overs)

Chandana has taken the second wicket for Sri Lanka. Chandana perfected the ball, guided it perfectly between the bat and the pad, and straight onto the top of the off stump. It was evident that Chandana had been aiming at that spot for ages, and he will be happy to strike it.

Sinclair?s wicket might be a boon and a curse. True, Sinclair should have been in the pitch for a longer time for a better score, but the amount of balls that he has consumed will create troubles for them and the New Zealandians would really enjoy a faster game of cricket.

Innings 1, New Zealand

New Zealand ? 170/2 (Day 1, 5:38 PM)
Overs: 75
Last Wicket: M. Sinclair b. Chandana 63 ( 134/1 )

Cairns (23)
Styris (67)

Zoysa (0/16 in 7 Overs)
Chandana (1/40 in 21 Overs)

With the arrival of Cairns, the amount of boundaries has increased. In the last 10 overs The Black Caps have been cruising at a run rate of 3. With almost half an hour left for the end of the day, The Black Caps are probably looking forward to crossing the 200 mark.

NZ have gone in a steady rate!!! I think Murali and Sanath can turn the match towards SL!!!

End of Day

Innings 1, New Zealand

New Zealand ? 180/3 (Day 1, 5:38 PM)
Overs: 80
Last Wicket: S. Styris b. Chandana 69 ( 176/3 )

Cairns (29)
Astle (2)

Jayasuriya (0/51 in 19 Overs)
Chandana (2/46 in 24 Overs)

Another wicket has fallen, and it is Chandana yet again. Styris who had been playing well was dismissed at 69, the highest score for New Zealand. Styris tried to hit a delivery wide of the off stump to the third man region, he failed to do so, and at the same time, the ball got an inner edge and hit the stumps.

Also, towards the end of day, New Zealand have scored 180 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Fleming (17), Sinclair (63) and Styris (69) were the once to get out. Chandana bagged two wickets and Maharoof got one. Towards the end of the day, Astle (2) and Cairns (29) remained not out at crease.

That's very slow batting from New Zealand. This game could pan out as a draw :(.

Lunch

Innings 1, New Zealand

New Zealand ? 274/3 (Day 2, 1:40 PM)
Overs: 107
Last Wicket: S. Styris b. Chandana 69 ( 176/3 )

Cairns (67)
Astle (58)

Jayasuriya (0/94 in 30 Overs)
Muralitharan (0/34 in 13 Overs)

The Sri Lankans have got their heads in their hands. The lack of wickets falling is a trouble for them, on the other hand, the two batsmen at crease, are piling on the runs. Also it is to be noticed that Jayasuriya himself and Chandana were given a great share of the Overs, while Vaas and Muralitharan didn?t get much.

Cairns showed his potential, right when he partnered Styris after Sinclair was dismissed. And he continued the savage even when Astle arrived. He scored his fifty in 93 balls with 2 fours, comparatively faster than Sinclair.

Astle on the other hand, used his experience and skill to successfully drive the ball through the gaps. This enabled him to reach his fifty in 75 balls which included 5 fours.
