The Sri Lankans have finally cracked the code. In just 3 overs the Lankans have been able to take two wickets ? and important one of Fleming and a wicket of Astle. Vaas and Jayasuriya have been able to bag their second wicket on the day. Towards the end of the day, The Kiwis have managed to make 253 runs at the cost of 5 top order wickets. It just remains to be seen how far the lower order and the tail-enders can do.
Dismissed Batsman?s Innings:
1st Wicket: Kiwi opening batsman, Matthew Sinclair played a very wonderful innings in the first test. Although he was unable to complete his century, he was the one to play 45 % of the balls bowled by Sri Lanka and 51 % of the total score. His innings include 8 fours. It was unfortunate that he lost the line of the ball and misjudged it and thus not positioning himself rightly to be bowled off the off-stump. Nevertheless, it was an important innings and wicket. Well played.
2nd Wicket: New Zealand have lost another wicket in the last 9 Overs. Styris coming in at no. 3 didn?t play long enough, or should one say he wasn?t allowed to play long enough. An attempted back foot defence was not enough to stop the ball. Jayasuriya coming around the wicket reduced the spin, and managed to trick the batsman into believing that the ball would spin a lot. It can be considered a waste of an innings for Styris and a wicket for New Zealand.
3rd Wicket: Chris Cairns played it like an ODI right in his first ball. Out of the 27 he scored, there were 4 fours. Meaning a 16 runs through boundaries. Keeping a remainder of 11 which was scored through singles. Apparently It was Vaas who gave away all the fours to Cairns
4th Wicket: Finally, Skipper Stephen Fleming has decided to go back to the pavilion. However it is better to say that Vaas sent him back. Fleming scored a 107 in 234 balls including 7 fours. He didn?t seem to be ready to go back even on the start of the 81st over. Right on the first ball of Vaas, Fleming tried to push the ball through the covers off the back foot. But the ball found the top edge and deflected straight to Sangakkara who picked it up.
5th Wicket: Astle returned back with 4 runs on his back. Not much of an innings for someone so important to the team. New Zealand now have only McMillan as a last hope.
