Steve Davies - "I am gay"

Kids need more gay role models nowadays anyways and nothing appeals more to kids than athletes.

This should work wonders for gay rights in the UK and hopefully encourages other people to come out. It can't be easy living a lie and that too for no reason other than bigotry.

Good on Jimmy Anderson too, he deffo paved the way for this.

Gonna be honest when I actually saw the title on the BBC website my first thought was Broad :p then followed by Cook (mainly because those 2 are the "pretty boys" of the team who aren't married :p) A bit stereotypical of me :p

I doubt most kids have heard of England's reserve ODI wicket keeper...

regardless the media hype it will create and just seeing him go about his business as usual will have an effect on the hetero population and you can't put a price on the inspiration it will have on gay youth.

Not neccesarily going to happen. Look what happened to Justin Fashanu.

well I still think it's a positive development, no matter how you look at it and regardless of what it's consequences will be.

It's good to see that he has the confidence to just come out and say it, although I can't help but feel that he should have felt like he could do this a long time ago, which is a shame really, that people are made to feel as outcasts.

He'll become a role model now, which will hopefully help others in similar situations. Would be cool if he paves the way for others.

On the Justin Fashanu thing, that's football fans of the 90s for you, a tragic story, but luckily, I think the world has changed for the better now, especially in cricket.

He has a courage and I respect his decision. People are just narrow minded and they need to change their thinking Very brave of him to show up in front of whole world.

We are with you Broad, reveal your identity :lol

so you support Davis and then make fun of Broad that he is gay. Um two levels there mate....

I don't think he will become a role model. Good on him for coming out, but there are more famous gays. Ian Mckellen is the first that comes to mind.

It's not a competition, he just happens to be first professional cricketer to come out.

Not sure it's changed in football though - still stuck in a time warp. Football thinks it's the most macho of all sports - in fact, nothing could be further from the truth!

However, it reflects well on 'Team England' and the sport in general - that he's finally been able to 'come out' - and is comfortable with it.
Wish him well in his future - and maybe England career.

That's why I added the especially in cricket bit, really. I agree with you that it's a lot easier to do in the Cricket world, than the football world.

Did I say it was? Just a bit far-fetched to say that he'll become a role model for gays to come out.

Role Model as in a gay sportsman, helping similar guys (or girls) who play sports to do the same to their team mates etc. I'm not suggesting he's going to gain world-wide recognition or something, you nutter.
