Super Challenge 2004 - Australia v World XI, 5th odi at Melbourne

Fleming won the toss on a warm, sunny day here at MCG and on a pitch looking to have plenty of bounce and runs decided to bat first.

Over to Ritchie Benaud for the toss and pitch report

5 overs: Tendulkar started off with couple of boundries but drove one uppishly and Clarke took a diving catch in covers to get rid of the little master. Fleming who is due for a big score has walked in with a positive attitude and with couple of good hits to the boundry ensured that the run rate is not affected. 24/1.

10 overs: Gillespie struck again, this time Harvey took a good catch, Flintoff's nightmare continued (or rather ended). Surprise no 4 Pollock is providing good support to Fleming as they look to build on. 61/2.

Yay, very happy to see the back of 10dulkar and for once go the Aussies. I thought Flintoff wasnt really playing this game, dont know what he paid Fleming to figure in 5 games in a row.

25 overs: Since I was losing a wicket after each update, I decide to post after 25 overs, and well  Aussies have captured 3 more wickets to have World XI in some trouble at 155/5. Lara and Dravid have so far added 55 after they looked down at 100/5, Harvey removed Kallis and Fleming in one over. All depends on if I can play out remaining overs now..plenty of runs in the pitch so anything less than 280 and Aussies would be looking to win yet another trophy.

35 overs: Fight back is on as Lara takes charge at the MCG. World XI have lost Dravid for a well made 46 (partnership of 90) but with the prince still there on 52 and Yuvraj looking confident they can hope for a big total. 206/6.

Not good for the Aussies if World XI get past 260. It will take a mamooth effort by me to score that many, I may not be that good. Come on you Aussies, get me few wicket quick.

Yuvraj and Lara propel World XI to 320

Not sure if it was Fleming's master plan to keep Yuvraj under wraps till the final game, but whatever it was his inclusion paid off handsomly today as MCG crowd witnessed some dazzeling strokeply by him and Lara that took World XI to 320. 114 runs were scored in last 15 overs and probably for the first time in this series the Aussies had no answers to some masterful strokeplay. Yuvraj raced to 69 off just 50 balls (9 4s, 3 6s), highlight was hitting a 24 run over (2 6s, 3 4s) to Harvey which brought back memories of last seasons VB series game. Lara played a crucial role to hold the inning together in middle overs and made a classy 85 of 98 balls. This pair added 120 for the 7th wicket. Earlier Dravid too made a strokeful 46 off 47 balls to stage the recovery for World XI. But with Yuvraj cutting lose, Fleming probably got more runs on the board than what he hoped for at one stage.

Well batted mate and thats for now is curtains for Australia :( . World XI scored 8 rpo for the last 15 overs  .Even if I can score 75% of the target I will be more than happy :p . At this point of time its kind of nothing to lose stuff, we will go all out at the target and who knows even I may be able to score some runs this time around. One good inspiration is Murali who use to have nightmares with batting now scoring 300 runs consistently  . Come on you Aussies, show the world we can do it.

probably a shock Ravi ;) even to me to be frank :D I didn't even expect to last for 50 overs after 5/100.
but I feel the game is still on, wicket looks full of runs and if any team can chase this target, it's probably the Aussies.
It'll be interesting to see the response from the world champions. May be some change in batting order needed? or will they miss someone like Symonds in this situation.
It all comes down to the last inning of the Super Challenge 2004 . good luck mate.

I suppose Australia could not have felt so down if it were playing a team like Zimbabwe or Pakistan or even India but when playing against the World XI surpassing such total is simply unimaginable. But as I said we now got nothing to lose so it gives the game a different dimension. I am going to have a go at this right now and see how we go.

Dont know why but Vaas is a Left hand medium bowler in the saved game and I checked his attributes to confirm he is a medium fast bowler in the rooster.pak. What do you have him as S?

World XI has made an excellent start scoring 11 runs off Harmison's first over of the inning. It does feel pretty good the batting, I have had to drop the !xspeed from +1.51 to +1.31 to even have a sniff at the target but it feels really good the batting. On +1.51 it was simply impossible to even imagine I would be able to chase such a massive target.

Sorted that S, had to change him from Left arm medium to Left arm medium fast.

Hes still bowling left arm medium:( , cant do much really will simply carry on playing. Maybe you had him as left arm medium only, I will just carry on then.

Update after 5 overs

Australia has got off to a great start and have reached 44/1. Harmison was taken for 19 runs from 2 overs prompting Fleming to bring in the change early on in the form of Pollock. Pollock was straight driven for four by Clarke but the very next ball was bowled playing across the line of the ball. Hayden is on fire 30*(18 balls, 5 fours) although couple of edges off Vass flew to fours. Australia now have an excellent platform but can they sustain this kind of run rate without losing regular wickets? Stay tuned.

Update after 10 overs

Australia have reached 77/1 after 10 overs without losing any more wickets since the last update. Hayden has continued to dominate the bowling and reached 50 in only the 10th over in 34 balls with 8 boundries. Ponting also has looked in good touch is batting on 14*(11). Fleming has ring in changes quickly to bring his trump card Murali in only the 10th over. Hayden swept the first ball for four but the next five balls fetched no more runs. A good contest now seems to be in place as far as Australia doesnt lose one too many wickets. There has been only one shot attempted over the infield and fortunately for Ponting it landed safely. That shows even without big hits the target may be chased.

Update after 15 overs

Australia have now reached 103/2. Murali and Pollock both are bowling pretty well in the last 5 overs. Murali in particular has bowled excellent spell so far and also picked up Ponting who swept straight to sq leg fielder. Martyn has joined Hayden and hit couple of sweetly timed fours. Australia at this point of time are ahead on run rate required as well have not lost too many wickets. Thanks to cool head and no reckless batting the target is now not a mirage.

Scorecard at 30 overs

The run rate has gone down for Australia but they still are comfortably placed. At this point of time World XI may seem to be the favorites what with only the current partnership and only Harvey the recognized batsmen. Hayden has batted really well, kept his cool and only punished bad balls. Good for the Aussies they have ran well, picked singles all the time and if Gilchrist can also rise to the occassion they may do a miracle.
