Is this going to be serious?

It reminded me of an adboard for the Evening Standard (I think) outside an underground station when they turned on the LHC, it read something like "World did not end".....Really!

well people with the virus has 50-50 chance of living now (which is sad)
Well they should have choose a better destanation then Mexico for god sake.
I mean what is there in mexico
I'm sorry to break the news that there are people who LIVE in Mexico...

A) They have more than a 50% chance of living, much more infact.
B) There are apparently (I haven't been), some nice holiday resorts in Mexico. It's all very well saying that they shouldn't have gone there in hindsight, but they weren't to know about what was to happen.

Should I be scared? Living so close to Mexico and all... I have no idea what all the fuss is about though. Not because I don't think it's serious because I know nothing about it. To be honest though, I'd rather keep it that way. Less to worry about.

No you shouldn't. If you are healthy, have a good diet and exercise that is. The cases in which people have been dying are cases in which the normal flu would kill them anyway. The flu and even the common cold kills a bucket load of people every year.

What does swine flu do to you and how long after infection until it can affect your life? I've briefly tried looking over the net for information but found nothing. It has been reported that the most influenced place in Australia has been Sydney and I know people who have already seen people with masks over their face like on television.

I know nothing about it, other then the symtoms and I've just been the last couple of hours vomitting, shivering and it has been to difficult to move off the couch because of strong pains in my stomach and a rapid headache. I've barely had anything to eat or drink today and what I tried to eat, I couldn't finish.

Can someone fill me in with the details?

From what I've heard and gathered from, it sounds like a bad flu. It's nothing to flip out over and if you got it, you'd be fine (you would have to see a doctor though). As I said earlier, the only people it's killing have been in 3rd world conditions, have poor health to begin with, or don't seek any medical care.

However, with all that being said, it is vitally important that medical attention is sought out if you contract it. It isn't exactly harmless, but then again it isn't as harmful as many news reporters are making it out to be.

The symptoms are similar to the "normal" flu. Sore throat, cough, fever, aches, head aches, chills, ect... I did a bit of research and vomiting and diarrhea have also been listed as symptoms too.

Chances are Ben, you just have a bug and you will be fine in a day or so. If you aren't feeling any better throughout tomorrow, I'd be going to the doctor if I were you. Better to be safe than sorry I guess.

:/ The uni have just sent everyone an email. Apparently there are students from Mexico who just got back and aren't well, so basically now I'm avoiding Mexicans :p Great reaction in a tutorial today though. One girl said she knew a couple of Mexicans who had fallen ill. Never seen so many people move that quickly ;) The email with actual help for students is just rubbish though

For several years the UK and Scottish Governments have been advising organisations to prepare for a pandemic. Both governments are very well prepared and we, in line with other universities, have developed our own contingency plans for the University of Aberdeen. We have a group which oversees our planning and will provide advice and guidance to the University community. We are also monitoring government advice and particularly that relating to overseas travel.

I still think this is being over done though. So a couple of students from Mexico are ill. Doesn't mean they are infected.
