Just back from watching Dhanush and Parvathy's "Maryan". Terrific film! Not flawless for sure, but its a film that Tamil cinema can be proud of. Dhanush as "Maryan" (a man who can never die) is just spell binding. One of the most terrific performances ever by a Tamil actor, this film more than Aadukalam fits the bill for a National award for Dhanush. Would be a disgrace if Dhanush doesn't win it. Speaks through his eyes, moves us through his body language, this guy is a mega star!
About the heroine - special mention of Parvathy Menon must be made here! After a long long time, a Tamil heroine who is filled with loads of substance and some tremendous acting. Parvathy Menon can kick the backs of various current actresses. Her performance as Panimalar is just wonderful. Her eyes are so captivating, and she uses her smile and her eyes to perfection. Last time I was so smitten by an actress's performance was Jyothika in Mozhi. Parvathy Menon should stay here for long.
The film - the storyline is a well known one. Has shades of Mani Ratnam's Roja, but this one is set differently. Contrary to what many may think, this is more of a love story (MadhavanGovind - TAKE NOTE!! This is your type of a film). The romantic portions in the first half are funny, light hearted and good. The second half gets into serious territory with the African portions. Frankly, I loved the first half more with its romance. The second half dips a little in pace, but the ending and the pre-climax make up for it well with gripping moments.
The songs - AMAZING!! And the background score, even better! Rahman has lifted Maryan with his music to dizzying heights. And the heart warming thing is that, Bharatbala uses the songs very convincingly. The songs are an extension of the film, and not just things that are thrown in for commercial purposes. Only the "Kadal Raasa" song looked a little silly with its placement, but the song was shot very well. "Nenje Ezhu" was the best and reserved for the very end. Goosebumps all over with Rahman's music!
Cinematography - Sensational! A lot has been said by people who have watched Maryan before, and I would just add that the cinematographer deserves a toast. Captured the sea and Africa beautifully!
Bharatbala - Considering that this is his debut in Tamil cinema, a highly promising debut. Has quite a few shades of Mani Ratnam is his style of film making. Takes the film at a very leisurely pace at places and gives it a very docu-drama style of making at places, but with more feedback, he will only grow. And what we have seen of him so far is very very promising.
Flaws - As I said, the pacing at places in the second half initially and bits in the first half. Some actors like Uma Riyaz Khan and Appukutti wasted in insignificant roles. At times, a docu-drama feel to the proceedings.
Overall: To sum it short, Maryan is what Kadal should have been. Raise a toast to Dhanush, Parvathy, Rahman and BB. 4/5

And forgot to add - Maryan >>> Raanjhanaa. Its tactical decision that Dhanush had to debut in Bollywood with a more commercial subject like Raanjhanaa, but his show in Maryan must be made accessible to a pan-Indian audience. People in Bollywood might drop their jaws in awe seeing this performance of his.
Wish Maryan is dubbed into Hindi.
