Bailey takes race two, outgoing champ signs off with victory in final race.
Stephen Bailey and Matt Neal ended the season in style, as the pair secure victory the last two races of the season. For Matt Neal it was a fantastic end to what has been a disappointing season for the two-time champion. Jason Plato, who has also had a somewhat disappointing year, made him work hard for it however, as the pair swapped positions several times. However, had it not been for Bailey and Neal's team-mate Gordon Shedden colliding on the exit of Brooklands, they may not have been fighting for victory! Bailey had an astonishing first lap. Starting from eighth, the young Briton found himself in second at the end of the lap, right behind Shedden. On the run down to Brooklands, the SEAT pulled alongside the Halfords Honda and dived up the inside, only to run slightly wide, allowing Shedden the opportunity to come back up the inside. The pair touched, sending Shedden's Accord into a spin (fell to seventh), Bailey continued in third. Two cars later however, Bailey tried an impossible move on Tom Chilton, pushing the Vauxhall wide. When Bailey tried to rejoin, he got turned round by Darren Turner. New champion, Fabrizio Giovanardi, took advantage of the madness to move up from seventh to third in just a few corners.
Neal and Plato shakes hands after their battle, whilst Giovanardi celebrakes receiving the BTCC trophy
There were several other controversial moments during the final race. Gordon Shedden turned round Colin Turkington's BMW on his charge back up the field, sending the Irishman down to 11th, handing second in the championship to Stephen Bailey. Bailey at this point was busy fighting his way back through the pack, and would eventually take third place with an fantastic move around the outside of Giovanardi at Luffield. Back up front, Neal and Plato would go on to swap positions five times in the last three laps. The pair are well known for having highly charged scraps on the track and slagging matches off it, but this time atleast, they were seen to be shaking hands and sharing a few friendly words after the race.
Colin Turkington, 2007 Independents Champion
Despite being taken out by Gordon Shedden, Colin Turkington secured the independents title, from fellow BMW driver, Mat Jackson, by ten points. Turkington's team-mate, Tom Onslow-Cole, finished third in the standings.
