The classiest, calmest man on a cricket field, Hashim Amla's name is etched in South African cricket history. With his wristy leg-side flick and serene cover drive, Amla became the first South African to score a triple century in Test cricket, while also effectively shifting gears to become the fastest batsman to 2,000 (40 innings), 3,000 (57 innings), 4,000 (81 innings) and 5,000 (101 innings) runs in ODI cricket.
EDIT: Having a G to use for an opener was actually a pretty decent thing. I had the option of Chris Gayle, Gordon Greenidge, Gautam Gambhir, Graham Gooch, among others (and strangely enough, a lot of the opener G's are double G's)...there's a pretty damn good list of G's to choose from at the top of the order. But I had to go with Gavaskar. He has the best stats from the lot and he's one of the legends of the game.
His opening partner on the other hand was a bit more difficult. Despite the letter E being the most common English letter, the list of E's is surprisingly small. And I have three E's to deal with since my word is "GENERALISED". I took Fidel Edwards as my first pick because I believe that there are a couple of other people who have an E down at the tail and he may have been on their radar. Out of the list of E's, I picked him early on as a result. Like I was saying before, his stats don't befit what you'd really call an amazing bowler...but when he's in form he'll rip a batting order apart. It's not a "strong" pick, but I still think it's a good enough pick given the rules of the Draft. As for the other opener, Elgar was really the only one that I'm familiar with...I don't really have the time to do too much research into ye olde players of yore at the moment. I have more important real life stuff to consider. But this is helping me to take my mind off of things, in a way it's helping me to cope. I'll probably not make much sense for a good few days to come, so please just bear with me whenever it seems like I'm randomly ranting.
Of course! There can be no side of Asad without Misbah!
Misbah-ul-Haq, the man, the myth, the legend himself at #3 for my side.
Apart from the obvious reasons, he is a good batsman too, so I will pick him. Plus, he can always be my side's captain, batting coach, head coach, and chief selector.
Misbah has 5200 runs at an average of 45+ and is also Pakistan's most successful Test captain ever, so a must-pick for me!
I wish it was spelt 'sgihtedness'. Because then I'd have better choices at opener and Inzy would fit. Oh well.
I had it down to two very similar players statistically. But one's a truly great captain choice and when they both have Test and FC averages within two runs of each other, the runs saved by a great captain in the field are likely more useful.
Despite him not opening much, Ganguly was also an option for me (taken by @ddrap14 ). And lol about re-spelling the words. Next time we do this Draft idea, let's get some Hindi words. Double A's and E's aplenty.
