Okay guys....I know everyone's excited about this year's Ashes as the top two teams battle it out for cricket's biggest prize.

The Aussies have just announced the squad for the tests as well as the ODIs (Natwest Series and Natwest Challenge)

Spinner Stuart MacGill has been named in Australia's squad for the Ashes tour to England as back-up to Shane Warne.

MacGill earned his place by taking 65 wickets to help New South Wales win the Pura Cup title.

The 16-man squad includes three uncapped players - pace bowler Shaun Tait, batsman Brad Hodge and reserve wicket-keeper Brad Haddin.

Tait, who matched MacGill's wickets haul playing for South Australia, is the youngest member of the squad at 22.

"We have identified Shaun as a rising talent and this is a selection with a view to the future," said chief selector Trevor Hohns.

"He is a quality, young quick who has impressed us all with his raw pace." Tait said: "It's the biggest thing that's happened to me so far in my life."

MacGill, meanwhile, is a proven performer at Test level and has taken 39 wickets in six previous appearances against England, although all of them were in Australia.

Despite that, he has plenty of experience of English conditions after playing for Notts and that earned him selection ahead of young hopeful Dan Cullen.

"Stuart has done everything asked of him when he's been included in the Test team and continued to push his cause with several fine performances for New South Wales," said Hohns.

The inclusion of Hodge in preference to veteran Darren Lehmann poses a potential problem for Lancashire, who signed him as one of their overseas players for the summer.

He has served as back-up batsman on recent tours to India and New Zealand and is a prolific scorer at first-class level with almost 12,000 runs at an average of 47.5 to his credit, including 36 centuries. "There is a lot of cricket prior to the Test series with the one-dayers - it's a very packed schedule and that schedule brings injuries, form issues all sorts of things," said Hodge.
"I'm quite confident I'll make my debut some time during the five Tests." Haddin, meanwhile, can expect to see plenty of action in the non-international games as Australia look to give Adam Gilchrist a break.

"We are aware of the potential workload on Adam Gilchrist and it's the reason we have opted to choose a reserve keeper for the duration of the tour," said Hohns.

"Over time we have seen Brad as more of a limited-overs specialist, but his efforts at first-class level this season have been very good and this selection is a reward for those performances."

Australia and England will take part in the triangular NatWest Series, also involving Bangladesh, and three NatWest Challenge games prior to the start of the Tests.

One-day specialists Andrew Symonds and Brad Hogg retain their places for the first leg of the tour and there are also places for all-rounder Shane Watson and batsman Mike Hussey, who will also captain Durham in county cricket during the summer.

Australia Ashes squad: Ricky Ponting (captain), Adam Gilchrist (vice-captain), Michael Clarke, Jason Gillespie, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, Brad Hodge, Justin Langer, Michael Kasprowicz, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Stuart MacGill, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, Shaun Tait, Shane Warne. Australia one-day squad: Ricky Ponting (captain), Adam Gilchrist (vice-captain), Michael Clarke, Jason Gillespie, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, Brad Hogg, Michael Hussey, Michael Kasprowicz, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson.

speak for yourself mate!

I want the best Aussie side to come to England.

isnt it a great luxury of australian cricket that we can take a spinner as good as stuart macgill who had the potential to be the best spinner in the world, along as a backup? thats realy depth

He has the stats but I personally feel he is a bit overrated.

the way he played against england in australia when warne was out a few years ago indicates how damaging he can be. england will hope that nothing happens to warne because macgill can be so damaging when he gets a sniff that he might get a shot at some cricket

I really do think, if their is a time for england to regain the ashe's it will be this series. England have performed well the last few years in the test arena. Really all england has to focus on is getting gilchrist out early. If they can accomplish that then I do feel Australia will crumble. How many times has Gilchrist saved Australia?. England have a few real good players, strauss being one of them. So if England play like they have been, I smell an upset coming.

How is it an upset?

England can beat Australia on merit.

Stuart MacGill overrated . A joke cracked ???

Just to make it to the Aussie team of this era will have made him a legend .But this guy can be said to be the among the best spinners in todys time. Atleast he is better than any English spinner post war .
Also after warney,Murali and Kumble he is the best spinner from the 80's.

Team from Australia is along expected lines but for one that of S.Tait .

I thought in English damp conditions Bracken or Nicholson would have got chance as they swing it wheras Tait goes for pace.Bracken's performance was nice in the finals and Nicholson's was mind boggling.

All in all on paper Ashesh to Australia 5-0

I have never rated McGill has a good bowler. He is nowhere near the likes of Warne and Murali. All he does is bowl juicy full tosses which can be easily dispatched to all parts of the ground.

Maybe 5-0 to Aussies on paper, but come August its gonna be 2-1 to England.

mark, come on, who's the favs towin the ashe's the australians, hence if England does win, it will be an upset.

Yes Mcgill, maybe overrated, but sadly he does get wickets, mind you, I think he gets them cause he puts the batsman off with his toungue. :P

If you can get Gilly out we'll crumble? He bats at 7, we have to crumble before you even get to him, yet alone get him out.

Against what opposition

Yeah, but we have 11 ;)

Well England must have quite a problem facing full tosses, considering he has 39 wickets in 6 games at an average of 24 against them, with an economy rate of 2.72 (from just bowling full tosses, so he must be lucky  ) and strike rate of 54.

The Fact is no Aussie or Englishmen will ever back down to an argument here or anywhere to do with the Ashes lol.

MacGill i think is good, but why don't we want Warne injured, Warne is twice as good as MacGill, of course we would want Warne injured. But then again, all the Aussies wo0uld be like 'oh we didn't have Warne' as Stevie and Michael said
