Ghana vs Holland LIVE

Welcome to the penultimate day of group matches. Ghana take on Holland in the battle for qualification with only a point needed for both sides.

Holland make four changes from the side that thrashed Costa Rica 4-1. Van der Wiel, Mathijsen and van Bronckhorst are moved to the bench with Marcellis, Boulahrouz and Bouma replacing them at the back. Drenthe is sidelined for Kuyt who will starts on the right.

Ghana have major injury woes as Shilla and Gyan were ruled out for the rest of the tournament after their match with Poland. Not only will Ghana be without those two but the captain John Mensah will be on the bench today due to a leg injury picked up in training. Sulley Muntari still misses out as he plays out the last game of his ban following FIFA's two-match ban for a two footed tackle in Ghana's draw with Costa Rica.

Holland just have the one injury to contend with, that of second-string goalkeeper Michel Vorm who is out for the tournament.

3 mins: We have our first shot on goal, a harmless long range effort from Amoah that flies high and wide.

5 mins: Robben goes down under a challenge from Asamoah. The physio rushes on but Robben is quickly on his feet.

7 mins: Great football by Ghana and it almost results in a goal. Amoah keeps the ball in on the right wing and pulls inside. A quick touch to Barusso offers the chance to shoot and he doesn't turn it down. A good hit but into the side netting.

10 mins: Boy do Ghana look up for this as they run circles round Holland. This time Tagoe hits the final shot but there isn't enough curl on it and the keeper sees it wide.

24 mins: First real chance of the match for Holland and it falls to Kuyt. A ball in by Bouma drops to Kuyt on the edge of the area and he volleys at goal with his left foot. It dips but it's comfortably wide and out for a goal kick.

32 mins: Kingson produces his first save of the afternoon as he denies Kuyt's goal-bound header. Robben set up the break as he starts to get more involved in the game.

45+2 mins: Three minutes of added time go up. Barusso almost takes Ghana into the half one-nil up with another stunning strike. It flies just over but had it be on target Stekelenburg wasn't getting there.

45+3 mins: HALF TIME. A 0-0 score line at half time will please both managers. Ghana have looked more threatening but the quality of Holland's attack is clear to see. In the other game Poland have the lead at half-time thanks to a Blaszczykowski goal.

45 mins: Holland make a change. van Bronckhorst replaces Bouma.

52 mins: That's all Holland's substitutes used with just under 40 minutes left to play. Boulahrouz and van der vaart make way for Mathijsen and Sneijder.

63 mins: Heitenga almost snatches the lead for Holland with a strong header. It flies over the bar but signs that Holland could score at any time, even with Ghana on top.

65 mins: Ghana make their first change. Amoah, who took a knock earlier, is brought off. Ayew takes his place alongside Tagoe.

68 mins: GOAL. I said they looked dangerous and they've scored a goal against the run of play. Kuyt takes it down the right beating Sarpei and putting a low ball into the box. Huntelaar is there to poke it into the bottom corner leaving Kingson with no chance of stopping it. Ghana won't know it but Poland are 3-0 up against Costa Rica. As it stands Poland will make it through on goal difference.

79 mins: Appiah goes close to levelling it at 1-1 only to see his low shot pushed away by Stekelenburg. Only ten minutes plus added time left for Ghana to score.

80 mins: Ghana make a change. Sarpei is replaced by Kingston as they move to a 3-1-3-1-2 formation.

90 mins: Three minutes of added time. It looks like Ghana will be going home despite being the best team in the group in terms of performance. The draw with Costa Rica has cost them dearly.

90+3 mins: FULL TIME. Ghana have lost and because of Poland's comfortable 3-0 win over Costa Rica they are dumped out of the competition. Ghana won't believe it. They have looked excellent in all three games but have lacked conviction. Injuries have hindered them greatly and they will be left rueing what might have been for another four years.

Bert van Marwijk: "You have to feel for Ghana, they played extremely well today. We created some chances and I felt we were always in with a chance of snatching the win whilst it was 0-0. Now we must prepare for the knockout stages."

Milovan Rajevac: "We are devastated. The players gave one hundred percent today and yet they come away with nothing. We outplayed Holland and looked comfortable but the threat was always there and we didn't take care of it. We knew we would need to get a result and we went in with that mind set. I am proud of this team, we have given it our all and just haven't received any luck. But that's football."

Muntari apologises for red card

sulleymuntari.png

Muntari has apologised for his two footed challenge that saw him sent off against Costa Rica

Sulley Muntari has apologised to his team and fans for the sending off that saw the Inter midfielder miss almost all of Ghana's World Cup as they were dumped out on goal difference by Poland yesterday.

The Ghanaian spoke at a press conference today following Ghana's defeat to Holland in Polokwane yesterday afternoon. The midfielder was banned for two matches after he was sent off in the opening half of Ghana's match with Costa Rica.

"I'm incredibly sorry for my behaviour" was Muntari's opening statement as he read tentatively to a room of reporters. "It was a reckless challenge and it cost my team dearly. I wish to apologise to the coaches and players. They worked extremely hard all competition and I have let them down."

"The fans also deserve an apology. They have supported us brilliantly over the last few weeks and they don't deserve to see their players act like that on the field." Muntari quickly left the room before any questions could be asked.

Former captain and Ghana legend Abedi Pele has called for Muntari to be dropped because of his lack of discipline on the field. "This is not just one sending off, this is two in the space of two important competitions. If the team cannot rely on him to stay on the field he shouldn't be playing."

Ghana's top goal scorer went on to praise the team's performance despite their exit from the World Cup. "The team have been excellent over the past six months. They were unlucky not to win the African Cup of Nations and they certainly deserved to qualify from their group here in South Africa. The important thing is they keep their heads up and concentrate on qualifying for the African Cup of Nations."

Now the Ghana players head home for a few weeks before they regroup with their club teams ahead of the new season.

Italy, Spain and Germany beaten

salomonkalou.png

Salomon Kalou scored twice from the spot to knock out Italy

The World champions Italy, European champions Spain and Germany have all been knocked out after an interesting second round in South Africa.

Ivory Coast pulled off the first upset of the round with a 2-1 win over the reigning champions Italy. Salomon Kalou bagged himself two second half goals from the spot to give the African side a 2-0 lead. Alessandro Del Piero scored in injury time but by that time it was too late. The Italian team will now prepare to face media frenzy back home with Marcello Lippi's job on the line.

Penalties were needed in the contest between Spain and Ireland with Chris McCann scoring the winning kick to send the European champs home. McCann had earlier given his side the lead before David Villa cancelled it out in the second half.

England brushed aside Serbia comfortably in Johannesburg with a brace from Steven Gerrard and goals from Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney. Serbia scored twice themselves through Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Gojko Kacar but they never looked like winning the game.

Daniel Alves, Luis Fabiano and Robinho handed Brazil an easy win over Mexico. The Central American side struggled in front of goal, failing to put any one of their eight shots at goal on target.

18 shots for USA weren't enough to defeat Holland as Robin van Persie slotted in a goal on 37 minutes which proved to be the winner.

Argentina sneaked past Poland in Pretoria thanks to goals in both halves from Gabriel Milito and Sergio Aguero. Jakub Blaszczykowski levelled for Poland just before half time but Argentina's dominance deserved the 2-1 final score.

Russia wrapped up the win over Morocco inside 48 minutes in a game that was a lot closer than the score line suggested. Roman Pavlyuchenko opened the scoring but the turning point came before half time when Abdeslam Ouaddou put the ball into the back of his own net. After the break Pavel Mamaev confirmed Russia's place in the quarter finals.

In the most eagerly anticipated match of the round France came out on top in a 3-1 win over Germany. Karim Benzema and Yoann Gourcuff put France two up before Dieter Schmidt pegged them back on 62 minutes. The game hung in the balance until two minutes into injury time when Chelsea's Florent Malouda made it 3-1. The bad news for France is that Patrice Evra will miss the remainder of the World Cup with a fractured rib.

Results in full:

Italy 1-2 Ivory Coast
Spain 1-1p Ireland
England 4-2 Serbia
Mexico 0-3 Brazil
Holland 1-0 USA
Poland 1-2 Argentina
Russia 3-0 Morocco
France 3-1 Germany

In the quarter finals Ivory Coast face Brazil. Ireland take on old foes England and Holland play France. The final tie sees Argentina and Russia lock horns for a place in the semi finals.

Gerrard goal seals semi final spot

stevengerrard.png

Gerrard's 21st and most important England goal lands France semi final tie

England are through to the semi finals after a stunning strike from midfielder Steven Gerrard handed them a 1-0 win over Ireland.

A screamer from Gerrard just before half time was enough for England as they made possession and chances count. Shay Given was forced to make several saves just to keep his side in the game but he was unable to keep out Gerrard's powerful shot from the corner of the box as it flew into the top corner.

Brazil were made to work extremely hard by Ivory Coast for their place in the semi final with neither side being able to score in normal or extra time. Brazil controlled the game creating 20 shots on goal, including twice hitting the woodwork. Ivory Coast kept out the Brazilians for 120 minutes to take the game to penalties. Adriano, Kak?, Robinho and Alex all scored from the spot whilst Dindane and Keita missed to hand Brazil a 4-1 win.

Russia caused a small upset in Cape Town as they managed to overcome South American giants Argentina 1-0. Pavel Pogrebnyak scored his second goal of the tournament 40 minutes in to give Russia an unexpected victory. Argentina will rue missed chances, only hitting three of their 19 shots on target.

In the final quarter final match-up France won 3-1, repeating their second round score line, this time knocking out Holland. Franck Rib?ry opened the scoring just before half time but Rafael van der Vaart pulled Holland level after the break. Central defender Philippe Mex?s put France ahead once again on 65 minutes and Yoann Gourcuff made sure of the result five minutes from time.

Results in full:

Ivory Coast 0-0p Brazil
Ireland 0-1 England
Holland 1-3 France
Argentina 0-1 Russia

Russia have never made it past the first round in previous World Cups and will need to beat five times World Cup winners Brazil if they wish to make it to their first final. England and France have both won one World Cup apiece, and with heavy expectations from home there will be big pressure on both sides to make it to the final.

Brazil and France set for World Cup reunion

benzemaandadriano.png

Benzema and Adriano both scored as France and Brazil reach World Cup final

A 73rd minute goal from striker Karim Benzema books France a place in the final where they will meet Brazil, the same opponents they faced when they won their first World Cup in 1998.

In an even game at Soccer City in Johannesburg, both England and France had their chances to take the lead. However, the deadlock wasn't broken until 17 minutes from time when Benzema turned his marker swiftly before slotting past Ben Foster to hand France a slim victory.

This came after Brazil's comfortable 3-0 win over Russia in the first semi final yesterday evening. Goals from Thiago Silva and Felipe Melo put the five time champions 2-0 up inside half an hour, and when Adriano hit the third on the break with 20 minutes remaining the game was over.

We now look ahead to Sunday's repeat of the World Cup final 12 years ago, in which France came out on top 3-1. Both sides are missing key players with the likes of Lucas, Robinho, Luis Fabiano and Daniel Alves out for Brazil: Hugo Lloris, Bakary Sagna and Patrice Evra all sit on the sidelines for France.

First England and Russia will battle it out for third place on Saturday, with England given favourite status following strong performances throughout the tournament.

Semi final results:

Brazil 3-0 Russia
England 0-1 France

Final:

Brazil vs France

France in the final- Seems sooo opposite of what happened at this world cup =/
Well, I want a repeat of 1998 final here though :D
France FTW :)

Russia beat 10-man England

rioferdinand.png

Rio Ferdinand was sent off after bringing down Pavlyuchenko in the area on 23 minutes

England's World Cup ended in defeat as they lost 2-1 to Russia in the battle for third place, Rio Ferdinand being sent off after just 23 minutes in Durban.

Ferdinand's tackle on Roman Pavlyuchenko inside the penalty area saw the Manchester United defender given a straight red and, after several minutes of protest, Pavlyuchenko stepped up to score the penalty himself giving Russia the lead.

It took just six minutes for Russia to increase that lead to two goals. Yuri Zhirkov's superb cross gave Vladimir Bystrov the chance to round Foster and place the ball into the net.

England proceeded to create numerous chances but were unable to find the back of the net until the dying minutes. Ashley Young's header to Steven Gerrard allowed the Liverpool captain to shoot from 30 yards leaving Igor Akinfeev with no chance of keeping it out.

Despite the wonder strike from Gerrard, England were unable to complete the fightback and were made to settle for an effective fourth placed finish.

Fabio Capello praised his side's performance in the World Cup following the game. "We played with a lot of expectations, and although we didn't make it to the final we did ourselves proud. The team played very well and many players have gained experience. We now concentrate on qualifying for the European Championships."

Brazil vs France - World Cup Final LIVE

Brazil: C?sar, Maicon, Maxwell, Lucio (c), Silva, Melo, Hernanes, Renato, Kak?, Pato, Adriano. Subs: Gomes, Juan, Alex, Anderson, Robinho, Marcello, Ramires, Victor.

France: Mandanda, Gallas, Clichy, Abidal, Mex?s, Flamini, Diarra, Govou (c), Rib?ry, Gourcuff, Benzema. Subs: Carrasso, Squillaci, Clerc, Malouda, Henry, Diaby, Vieira, Anelka, Gignac.

8 mins: A scramble in the box gives us the first real chance of this World Cup Final. A corner is whipped in by Renato and a scramble of headers and shots ensues. After a weak punch by Mandanda Kaka gets his head to the ball but it's a comfortable save for Mandanda in the end.

9 mins: Kaka weaves some magic as he cuts inside past several defenders before firing goalwards. Again Mandanda makes the save but Kaka is threatening.

10 mins: Oh boy, controversy already. Kaka again creates the chance as he sprints down the left and puts the ball into the box. Adriano gets up for the header along with Mandanda and Mexes. He wins and nods it into the empty net before running towards the fans in celebration. Unfortunately for Brazil the linesman has his flag up. It looks like it's called for a foul on Mandanda but if there's any contact it's minimal. Brazil will feel aggrieved if they lose this game by a goal.

18 mins: France can't handle the pace and skill of Brazil at the moment. Pato runs rings round the French defence as he starts out wide left before cutting to the byline and eventually shooting from the edge of the area. The shot hits Mandanda straight in the chest and he holds on.

19 mins: Flamini has a dig from long range but Cesar watches it harmlessly fly wide.

27 mins: Mandanda makes yet another save but this time he doesn't really no much about it. Kaka plays in Pato who beats a defender and fires a shot at goal. Mandanda makes himself big and the ball richochets off his knee and away to safety. Brazil really look on top of their game at the moment.

33 mins: Melo goes close from miles out with a dipping shot but it skims the net as it goes over.

34 mins: What a chance for Lucio. Renato again with the corner and Lucio peels away off the back post. He beats gallas in the air but his header sails over.

40 mins: France create their best chance of the game. Gallas puts in a low cross and it falls behind the Brazil back line. It falls to Ribery who hits it first time on the volley. He doesn't time it well and it trickles wide.

42 mins: GOAL. It's been coming and it's Adriano who has justice. Kaka slots him through on goal and he makes no mistake, drilling the ball below Mandanda from a tight angle. He thumps his badge and runs towards the crowd. 30 goals for Brazil and what an occasion to get there. Mexes is having a go at the linesman. The replays show it was tight but I'll leave it at that.

45+1 mins: HALF TIME. Govou smashes his free kick well wide to conclude the first half. Brazil deserve their lead.

45 mins: Both sides make changes at half time. First Brazil switch Renato for juan down the right side. France make a double change: Diarra and Gourcuff are repalced by two vetrans, Vieira and Anelka.

56 mins: After a quiet ten minutes the whole stadium jumps off their seats as Benzema's long range shot bounces over off the crossbar. Brazil need to play like it's 0-0 otherwise France may just level it up.

60 mins: Kaka again links up with Pato but, unlike Adriano, he is unable to beat Mandanda who pushes the shot away. Clichy clears.

70 mins: Benzema comes close again from outside the area. This time it's Cesar who denies him, pushing away his goal bound shot at full stretch.

72 mins: Ribery is replaced by Henry. France have now used all three subs. At the same time Robinho takes the goalscorer Adriano's place up front.

74 mins: Cesar is called into action again. He rushes out to block Anelka's header as it hits his head. It could have gone anywhere but it falls safe for a French corner.

84 mins: Henry takes his first shot but the 30 yard free kick sails over. Time is running out for France.

85 mins: GOAL. Well, well, well. France have levelled and it's the skipper Govou who gets the goal. After a few quick passes Vieira plays the French captain in and he beats Cesar at the near post. Again there are suspicions of offside and replays show Govou was. Brazil will be fuming if they fail to win this game. That's two important decision that have gone against them today.

87 mins: Straight from kick off Robinho gives the ball away and France attack. In the end Gallas' deep cross is headed by Henry but into the hands of Cesar. Govou seems to be looking for a penalty but the ref ignores him.

88 mins: Maxwell and Marcelo switch places as Brazil use up their last substitution.

90 mins: There will be four added minutes.

90+2 mins: Mandanda again denis Pato diving low to his left. This game looks destined for extra time.

90+4 mins: PENALTY. Drama in the dying seconds as Clichy bundles over Kaka in the box. The referee points to the spot sparking a huge rush of players towards him. France cannot believe it. It's certainly a huge call to make as this will likely be the last kick of normal time. Kaka looks like he will take it himself...

90+5 mins: GOAL. Kaka sends Mandanda the wrong way and Brazil have won their sixth World Cup, all be it in controversial circumstances. What an end to this final. The whole Brazilian team run to the corner flag and there is pandomonium in the stands. The French players and fans cannot believe it.

90+6 mins: FULL TIME. Brazil have won the World Cup yet again. Kaka and Adriano with the goals, cancelling out a controversial Govou goal five minutes from time. A game with many talking points but all in all the better side won.

What a dramatic game! A true classic. I guess Brazil deserved it in the end, after controversial decisions went against them. Well done to them. Also Govou captain?
