Story The Great Australian Rebuild | 2nd Test | A gruelling day 1

Kohli stands alone in bowler dominated match in Melbourne

Aaron Finch would win the toss and send the Indians in on a cold night in Melbourne. Nathan Coulter-Nile, who was recalled for this match, would repay the faith as he would strike early with the dismissal of Rohit Sharma in a brilliant opening spell that saw him bowl 3 powerplay overs and concede only 8 runs. Shikhar Dhawan struggled to get away from as he would eventually be dismissed for 19 off 15 deliveries. This would bring Virat Kohli to the crease who alongside KL Rahul built a fantastic partnership that would take India to 2/95 off 11 overs. Adam Zampa as he so often does would provide the vital breakthrough as KL Rahul skied one to the captain at long on. After Rahul's dismissal, India would frequently lose wickets, with no other batsmen in the order able to break into double figures. This didn't stop Kohli however, who despite having no regular partner at the other end, would continue on his way, carrying his bat through the remainder of the innings and finishing on 73* (42) to set India up to a decent total of 8/169. For Australia, Tye and Stoinis would pick up 2 wickets, as well as Coulter-Nile who finished with fantastic figures of 2/15 off his 4 overs.

Virat Kohli played a lone hand in India's middle order, with a fantastic 73*

In reply, Australia's chase started disastrously as 20 year old Khaleel Ahmed playing his 5th T20I would take 3 early wickets with Kuldeep also picking up 2, leaving Australia in a massive hole at 5/40. Alex Carey (21 off 16) and Ben McDermott (37 off 29) would attempt a resurrection of the innings, however there was just too much to do once Carey was caught behind off the bowling of Kumar. Andrew Tye (21 off 14) would partner McDermott to try and make a respectable attempt of the chase, but the damage was already fatal, and Australia would be bowled out in the 19th over for just 133. Khaleel Ahmed would finish with a brilliant 4/33 from his 4 overs and be awarded the Man of the Match award.

India may have unearthed a new superstar in Khaleel Ahmed after his brilliant 4/33 in Melbourne

India win by 36 runs, and claim the series 2-0. The teams will now travel to Sydney for the final T20I, with Australia hoping to take something out of this series.

Batsman and Zampa seal consolation win for Australia

Australia have dominated the 3rd T20 against India with a 61 run win in Sydney to avoid an Indian clean sweep of the series. Virat Kohli would win the toss and send the Aussies in, looking to take advantage of the vulnerable top order from last match. However D'Arcy Short and skipper Aaron Finch were fantastic as they smashed the Indians around, and when Finch (41 off 18) was dismissed the score was already 70 in just the 7th over. Chris Lynn (4 off 4) would again fail to make an impact, and Maxwell (16 off 9) was dismissed cheaply before disaster struck for India. Khaleel Ahmed the star of the 2nd match, would be seen limping off after the conclusion of his first over. This would leave India with no other bowling options, forcing the skipper to take the ball himself. This would allow Australia's middle order to be really quite aggressive and they particularly targeted leg spinner Kuldeep as he would be smashed for 56 off his 4 overs. Kohli's 3 overs would go for 31, which wasn't a horrible result considering Australia managed to pile on 209 from their 20 overs. McDermott (36 off 18) and Stoinis (32* off 15) were brilliant deep in the innings and the Indian batsmen needed to start very well to have any chance in the chase.

D'Arcy Short and Aaron Finch celebrate their 50 run partnership on their way to a 70 run opening stand

Unfortunately that wasn't the case, as Sharma and Dhawan failed to get India off to a flyer, and were than dismissed in back to back overs to have India 2/43 at the conclusion of the powerplay. Virat Kohli (34 off 25) again attempted to lead the charge, but India's middle order failed to make any impact as Adam Zampa would tear through the middle order, dismissing KL Rahul, Risabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik to see India 5/78. The climbing run rate would see Kohli take on Maxwell's off spin, however a top edge to the man of the moment, Adam Zampa, at deep square leg would see his demise, and any realistic chance India had of chasing the total down. Jasprit Bumrah (16* off 17) and Krunal Pandya (28* off 20) would put together a 38 run partnership through the last 6 overs to make India's total somewhat respectable, taking the score to 8/148 as the innings was concluded. Australia seal a 61 run win, and the series finishes with a 2-1 victory for India.

Adam Zampa appeals after striking KL Rahul on the pad, on his way to 4/24

This now leads us to the start of the red ball leg of the tour, with the first test in Adelaide. India will be looking to be the first Asian side in history to win a test series in Australia, and there is no better chance for this than now, with the depleted Australian side in complete transition.

Marcus Harris is confirmed to be getting a test debut, but who else is likely to join him?

Marcus Harris has absolutely starred in this years Sheffield Shield Season so far, and has been confirmed to be opening the batting in the first test of the summer according to reports. He has scored 501 runs at an average of 71.57 in the first 5 matches of the season, including a mammoth 250 against NSW in Round 2. So who else will join Marcus in playing the first test against India?

1740809258280.png

This is the top 20 run scorers in the shield so far, and despite the Marsh brothers appearance on this list, they are still ineligible due to the Cricket Australia bans, and will not be featuring anytime soon.
Marcus Harris tops the list with wicketkeeper batsmen and Australian vice captain Matthew Wade in 2nd, a pleasing sign for the Australian's as Wade will bring incredible form into the series. Peter Handscomb has done no harm in his attempt to retake his test spot, after being dropped for the 2nd test in the UAE. Joe Burns has certainly made a case that he should be the one accompanying Harris at the top of the order, however it looks likely Aaron Finch will continue the roll.

1740809455355.png

The leading wicket takers of the season for far, sees Victorian Scott Boland at the top of the list, with a brilliant 30 wickets @ 16.6, while striking every 35.6 deliveries. Jhye Richardson has been impressive, but is unlikely to feature in the first test due to a slight hamstring injury. This leaves the door open for perhaps Chris Tremain or Joe Mennie, as they have had fantastic seasons with 26 wickets each. Peter Siddle is likely to retain his spot despite his below par start to the season, as Australia need a senior head in the team when they look to take on the Indians brilliant batting line up.

While Australia are still working out their squad, India have confirmed that their squad will remain unchanged as they head into the first test in Adelaide.

Australian announce 14 man squad for first test against India

Australia's first red ball squad of the summer sees a plethora of new faces, as Justin Langer and his side prepare to do battle with the best cricketing nation in the world. Marcus Harris has already been confirmed to be making his test debut, however he may just be the tip of the iceberg. Scott Boland, Michael Neser, Kurtis Patterson, and Chris Tremain have all been included into the test squad, and could potentially be making their debuts. Joe Burns has also earned a reprieve to the test squad, following his fantastic start to the shield summer, edging out fellow Queensland teammates, Marnus Labuschagne and Matt Renshaw, who have both had poor shield seasons.

Fawad Ahmed has been the only spinner picked in the squad, all but securing his place in the first test and having won the battle for the spinner position over fellow Victorian Jon Holland. Glenn Maxwell, Alex Carey and Ashton Agar are also out of the squad, and while the latter 2 did not play a match in the UAE, Maxwell will be disappointed after performing decently in the UAE, being Australia's 3rd highest run scorer. Jhye Richardson has also been selected in the squad, but will still need overcome his hamstring issues before the match.

Siddle and Wade 50's as Shami stars with the ball

Australian captain Cameron White would win the toss and elect to bat first in Adelaide, sending debutant Marcus Harris straight into action, however he was not the only debutant for the Aussies. In fact there were 3 more debutants as Kurtis Patterson would get his chance in the baggy green, slotting in to bat at 3, Richardson's failed fitness test 24 hours earlier, would see Chris Tremain and Scott Boland both make their debuts, edging out Queenslander Michael Neser, who is still chasing his first cap. Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch would combine for a 50 run opening stand, to get Australia off to a nice start, before Bumrah finally got the edge of the debutant as Harris was dismissed for 24. Kurtis Patterson unfortunately wouldn't last much longer on debut, as he would be outdone by Ashwin, nicking off, before the Australian skipper would chop on from a booming cover drive off the bowling of Shami for just 4.

1741067613000.png

Debutant Marcus Harris walks out to bat, he would make 24 (53) in his first test innings

India were fantastic with the ball, and routinely picked up wickets to stifle any Australian momentum in their batting. At 7/173, India would have been feeling extremely confident of knocking over the Australians for under 200. And perhaps they should've done so, as the skipper Kohli would grass one of Peter Siddle's edge when he was just on 2, a costly mistake, as Peter Siddle teamed up with vice captain Matthew Wade to put on a 58 run partnership which saw the former reach his half century. Siddle would continue on to bring up his 3rd test fifty, which have all been against India. Australia would eventually finish with a total of 278 from 103.5 overs. Siddle would finish unbeaten on 56. Shami was the pick of the bowlers for India finishing with 4/74 from 31, while Ashwin picked up 3 wickets. Australia will desperately need early inroads as this Adelaide pitch, certainly looks like its a much better track than Australia's batsmen showed.

Such a good captain White is, gave his own time on pitch so others can play more.

Rahul Hundred & Boland 5-FA as India take a lead into the 2nd innings

With Australia's under par first innings score, they knew they needed to strike early, and it was debutants Tremain and Boland who would provide those early strikes. Scott Boland would trap Murali Vijay LBW for 16, before Tremain would get the big wicket of Pujara for just 3. India 2/39, when the skipper would join KL Rahul at the crease. They would put on a partnership that looked likely to break Australia's back, until Fawad Ahmed would pick up his first test wicket in home conditions, get Kohli caught at first slip, giving Kurtis Patterson his first test catch.

1741137543017.png

Aaron Finch takes the catch of Cheteshwar Pujara to give Chris Tremain his first test wicket.

Ajinkya Rahane would not last long, also falling to Fawad, and Australia looked like they may be able to turn the match in their favour. This was when Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul combined to form a 132 run partnership and almost close the gap on Australia's lead entirely. KL Rahul would bring up a fantastic century, his 2nd in Australia, and one that may keep the doubters away for at least a brief moment. Sharma would find his way past 50, his 10th in test matches. With the score at 4/263, Scott Boland with the 2nd new ball in hand would bowl a fantastic spell, dismissing both Sharma and Rahul within 10 balls, and swinging the momentum again.

KL Rahul celebrates a brilliant century, he would finish on 127.

India's tail would provide some resistance, however the Victorian combination of Fawad Ahmed and Scott Boland would clean them up, taking the last 4 wickets for 67 runs, which saw Boland finish with a 5 wicket haul in his first test innings. Fawad Ahmed would finish with 4. India have obtained a lead of 54 runs, but this track still looks like it will reward some good batting as we've seen from Rahul and Sharma. Pressure is on the Australian top order after a poor display in the first innings.

A maiden ton for Head sets India 260 for victory.

With a first innings deficit in front of them, Australia's top order were looking to improve their performance from the first innings, but it wasn't to be for Aaron Finch (13) and Kurtis Patterson (12), as both were dismissed early. Marcus Harris however, showed a glimpse into the talent he could be with a gritty half century as he teamed up with the captain to put an 85 run partnership on. White would eventually fall for 42, before Harris would be dismissed just 10 balls later by Ashwin, leaving Australia 4/124 and only 70 runs in front.

1741228578342.png
Marcus Harris celebrates a debut 50, he would finish on 54, with 7 boundries.

Travis Head looked brilliant and unphased as wickets fell around him. He needed a partner to support him and again it was Peter Siddle who was a thorn in India's side. Peter Siddle and Travis Head would team up to take Australia from 7/184 to 8/279 when Siddle was finally dismissed, having contributed 26 runs in the innings and 81 runs for the match. This made Travis Head flip the switch and go into overdrive as he would smashed 31 runs in his next 10 deliveries, before finally falling to Ishant Sharma. However his brilliant 135 from just 147 deliveries had given Australia something to bowl at, setting India a target of 260.

1741231435747.png
A brilliant maiden Test century for Travis Head guided Australia in their 2nd innings.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma were the pick of the bowlers with 3 each. Shami and Ashwin were relatively ineffective in the 2nd innings, and Travis Head particularly feasted on them when he got the chance. India have just over a day to chase down the target, and with Australia's inexperienced attack, you'd have to say they are favourites going into day 5.
