David Gower: Hello and welcome to the first npower test match live on sky sports between England and the West Indies from Old Trafford, Manchester the usual home of Lancashire County Cricket Club. We are here from the start of the new summer and the start of a new era in English Cricket. I am joined by former England captain, Nasser Hussain and by former West Indies fast bowler, Michael Holding. Nasser first of all what do you expect to see from England in this series and who is set to stand out in this series?

Nasser Hussain: Well i think first of all England have to use the West Indies inexpeience to their advantage. They need a convincing test series victory to get back into the winning habit after their disastrous world cup effort. I think in this series Kevin Pietersen will again be the star for England but it think some of the younger English players may establish themselves well. I am looking towards Ian Bell, Matt Prior and Monty Panesar in particular.

David Gower: From your perspective Michael what are you looking to see from this very young inexperienced West Indies side in this series? Can they realsitically look at the possibility of defeating England or should they use it as an opportunity to get some more experience under their belt?

Michael Holding: Realistically i don't think they can look at the possibility of defeating the second best test playing nation in the world. I think they have to gain experience out of this tour though and find some emerging talents. I am interested in seeing the likes of Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo for example. As well as this i am sure we are going to enjoy watching the West Indies captain Brian Lara with his magical strokeplay.

David Gower: I am sure we will. Interesting to get both your thoughts and now i understand that Michael Atherton is outside the two teams locker rooms and can now give us the entire rundown on the two teams that have just been announced as playing in this test match.

Michael Atherton I do indeed have all the team news for this first npower test match. No real surprises but a few unexpected little things in the England team. Andrew Strauss is dropped for the returning Simon Jones. Michael Vaughan is set to captain England and open the innings which will be interesting. For the West Indies they have a very experienced start to their batting line up with Brian Lara, Shiv Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chris Gayle. Lara will want contributions from the rest of the team as well though.

David Gower: Now here is a list of the teams in full. For England it is; Michael Vaughan, Alistair Cook, Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Andrew Flintoff, Matt Prior, Harmison, Simon Jones, Matthew Hoggard and Monty Panesar and for the West Indies it is; Wavell Hinds, Chris Gayle, Brian Lara, Shiv Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Marlon Samuels, Carlton Baugh the wicket keeper, Ian Bradshaw, Dillon, Pedro Collins and Corey Collymore. Now we have the pitch report and the toss with Sir Ian Botham.

Sir Ian Botham: Thanks David. This is a traditional Machester or Old Trafford pitch. It is hard and their will be plenty of bounce for the fast bowlers as well as turn for the spinners as the match goes on. It is warm here and this pitch will i think deteriate throughout the pitch but i would bat if i won the toss. However i have a feeling that if England win the toss they may bowl because it is overcast here and traditionally the ball swings at Old Trafford. Michael Vaughan may want to pick up early wickets using Matthew Hoggard. I am now joined by Michael Vaughan and Brian Lara the captains of England and the West Indies respectively. Heads is the call from Lara and indeed it is heads. What are you going to do Brian?

Brian Lara Actually we are going to bowl. We think to give the team the ebst chance possible we need to bowl first and get England out cheaply and like you said the overhead conditions may help the ball to do a bit in the air. Hopefully this turns out to be a good toss to win.

Sir Ian Botham: Well the story here is that West Indies have won the toss and have elected to bowl.

David Gower: There is an aerial view of this historical ground from the betfair blimp. Right so West Indies will bowl first and England will bat and try to get runs on the board. We will back after this break and we will begin the coverage of the first npower test match between England and the West Indies live!

David Gower: Hello and welcome back to the first day of this npower test at Old Trafford between England and the West Indies. We are now ready for play so just a quick reminder of our commentary team.

17305063880.jpg

David Gower: And first up in the commentary box today are David Lloyd and Michael Holding.

David Lloyd: Thank you David and welcome everyone to this test match. The teams are out and it will be England to bat first. They will be hoping to get a good lead in this innings and get an earlyvictory over the West Indies in this series. The first bowler for the Windies is going to be Ian Bradshaw and on strike is Michael Vaughan. The umpires call for play and we are underway. Ouch what a good one first up, Vaughan got hit on the helmet hard there but he looks okay. Good start Michael.

Michael Holding: That was a good start i bet Michael Vaughan is feeling that one. Now lets have a look at these two batsmen, first of all Michael Vaughan who averages nearly 44.

And now his partner the young 22 year old who has made a good start to his career Alistair Cook.

17308033084.jpg

Thats the first over finished and England are 1/0.

9 Overs pass

David Lloyd: We are in the eleventh over now and Ian Bradshaw continues. Outside off stump and Cook is leaving them alone without any trouble. I think he has to improve his line. Bradshaw running in again and thats a perfect backfoot cover drive for 4 from Alistair Cook. That will be the first boundary of the morning.

Michael Holding: That was a great shot now what can Bradshaw do in reply. Bowled him! Alistair Cook has dragged one on to the stumps. West Indies get and early wicket Alistair Cook goes for 10, England are 26/1.

17308032915.jpg

David Lloyd: The new batsman for England is Ian Bell. Nasser Hussain said in the studio he thinks that this man will shine in this series. Well here is his chance.

17308033055.jpg

An over passes and Ian Bell gets off the mark.

David Lloyd: Right Pedro Collins into the attack what can he do. Thats another wicket, Michael Vaughan has nicked one to the wicket keeper and he goes for 13, England are in a little bit of trouble it is 32/2.

17308033083.jpg

Michael Holding: The new batsman for England is in my opinion their ebst player and the man who could destroy the West Indies in this series, Kevin Pietersen.

17308033087.jpg

5 overs pass and Chris Gayle is into the attack in the 20th over

David Lloyd Gayle in then and that will be four more for England. Ian Bell hit a leg glance in the previous over and he has just done it again. He looks in very good touch out there today. England are now 69/2 and Pietersen and Bell are helping to recover England from the two early wickets they lost.

Michael Holding: The West Indian bowlers have been poor they simply are not bowling in the right areas. On a hard surface like this you can't bowl short to these batsman they are so good on the backfoot and they are being punished by them.

The West Indies restrict England to 10 runs in 4 overs before Pedro Collins continues in the 25th over.

David Lloyd: Collins has been expensive but can he get his second wicket. No he can't because that is four from Kevin Pietersen off his legs through square leg and racing to the fence.

17308033052.jpg

Michael Holding: That is the 50 partnership from these two and they will now want to survive until lunch which is probably about 4 overs away.

2 overs pass with Ian Bell hitting a boundary off his legs and a single form Pietersen off of Bradshaw who is re-introduced because of the expensive Collins. The final over before lunch is set to be bowled by off spinner Chris Gayle.

David Lloyd: Gayle in to Pietersen. That has span and they are appealing for an lbw. Will Billy Bowden give it. No he doesn't. Well that looked close from here.

Michael Holding: That was close but i think the height may have been an issue there. I would say a good decision. And that was the final ball before lunch so let's take a look at the scorecards.

17308033059.jpg

1730803309.jpg

David Lloyd: Overall i would say that was a fairly even mornign but i will give England the edge because Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell are in on what looks a good batting surface. They are both on 30 not out and the two wickets to fall were the two openers, Cook for 10 and Vaughan for 13. Join us after the break in the studio for more analysis.
