England vs. West Indies: 1st Test, Day One, Evening Session LIVE!
David Gower: We are back at Old Trafford and we are ready for the final session of play in today's play and to take you through it are Michael Atherton and Michael Holding.
Michael Holding: Thank you David and this is going to be a very interesting period in the game i think. Either England are going to carry on batting very well and post a massive first innings total or the West Indies are going to show what they are and take some wickets and give themselves a chance but if i am honest i think there is only a slim chance of this happening but you never know in cricket.
The first over passes with 3 runs conceded and Chris Gayle is brought on by Brian Lara staright away.
Michael Atherton: Well this is the first over after tea from Chris Gayle and so far he has bowled two dot balls. Ian Bell is on strike and that is a good shot but he hasn't quite got hold of it he will get 2 there. Good shot through the covers. Gayle is very quick between deliveries. Bell facing once again and it is a repeat but this time it will; race to the boundary and that brings up a good fifty partnership between Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood.
2 Overs pass with England moving the score to 227/3.
Michael Holding: Right Pedro Collins the left arm over the wicket bowler is being brought into the attack by Lara. At the minute his economy is nearly five that is far too expensive so can he bring it down. Running in and that is a fine shot from Colingwood off his legs down to square leg for four. That was timed brilliantly.
3 more runs are scored off the over befoe Gayle is taken out of the attack and Dillon replaces him.
Michael Atherton: Dillon into the attack. Can he stop the runs flowing for England? Well the answer is no that one was overpitched and Collingwood punced on it to hit a beautiful cover drive to the boundary. Collingwood is looking increasingly dangerous and he moves into the thirties with that boundary.
3 overs pass with England carrying on scoring runs and the score moves to 252/3 with Ian Bell surviving an lbw appeal.
Michael Holding: Dillon to continue 3 off this over so far with the last ball coming. Collingwood on strike. He has gone. Collingwood nicks it to the wicket keeper trying a square cut which kept low and the Winidies make a breakthrough. England are still in a good position but they lose their fourth wicket and are now 255/4.
Michael Atherton: Well the Windies have got themselves a wicket but look who is here now and getting a great ovation from his homeground, the one and only Freddie Flintoff. Will we see some big blows today or can the West Indies get rid of him before he destroys their bowling?
2 balls later...
Michael Holding: Flintoff on strike for his first ball then. That will race to the square leg boundary hit off his legs. Too short from Pedro Collins that time. He needs to bowl more consistently because at the minute England are dominating and they are not being challenged by this attack. The only man who has looked as if he deserves a wicket is Chris Gayle and he isn't even a full time bowler.
7 overs are bowled with Bell steadily moving towards his century and Flintoff hitting the odd boundary. Bell is now on 98 and facing Pedro Collins in the 72nd over of the day.
Michael Atherton: Bell on strike now just one blow away from a century on the first day of this test. That is huge! It is ten rows back. Bell picked that up early and has hoiked it over deep backward square leg for a maximum and he gets a well deserved 100. He has hit 6 fours and 1 six and he has played patiently and has not taken any risks. A wonderful innings! Now can he go on even further?
Michael Holding: Right Ian Bell on strike in the 74th over to be bowled by Pedro Collins. Bell is out! He plays one towards fine leg who is up in teh circle and it is brilliantly held down low. Ian Bell leaves after scoring a massive 110 and impressing. The Windies will be gald to see the back of him that is for sure.
Michael Atherton: The new batsman is the wicket keeper Matt Prior who has had a very good start to his career and averages over sicty. Can he pile on more runs for England and create a big total or can the Windies get him out cheaply and expose the England tail on the first day?
Michael Holding: Pedro Collins to bowl to Matt Prior after just taking the wicket of Ian Bell. Collins running in. Bowled him! The West Indies are bouyant. Colins is on a hat trick and Matt Prior must go for a golden duck. Suddenly the West Indies are back in this match!
Michael Atherton: Now the tail is exposed and the West Indies may be thinking about ending England's innings tonight. The new batsman is the aggressive Steve Harmison.
Michael Holding: So Pedro Collins is on a hat trick. He runs ina nd it is short and Harmison ducks underneath but what a great over from him. England are now suddenly 301/6.
2 overs are bowled by the West Indies and 7 runs are scored.
Michael Atherton: Gayle brought back into the attack and Harmison on strike looking uncomfortable. Its up in the air and caught by Hinds at short leg. The Windies are appealing and it is given! Harmison goes. It came off the glove and went to short leg and England are now 7 down. This is great bowling from the West Indies if only they could have done it from the beginning of today.
Michael Holding: Well the new batsman is Simon Jones who is back into this team after a long spell out injured. Can he bat though? I guess we are about to find out. The West Indies will be looking to get him out and rip through the tail but don't forget Andrew Flintoff is not out.
In the next two overs Flintoff goes crazy and hits three boundaries meaning he reaches the thirties. Chris Gayle is back into the attack immediately and is about to face Flintoff.
Michael Atherton: Gayle to Freddie then. This could be interesting. Flintoff goes for a huge one but he is clean bowled by Gayle. Span back and has taken off stump out of the ground. Now the Windies are absolutely delighted. Flintoff is gone for a good 38 but England wanted more because now the tail is very exposed with only Hoggard and Panesar to come.
Michael Holding: The next batsamn for England is the blocking renowned Matthew Hoggard and we are approaching the end of the day. Will England hold out and stop the Windies from finishing off the tail today?
One over and five balls pass and Gayle is about to bowl the last ball of the day.
Michael Atherton: Last ball of the day and it is blocked by Hoggard. So England end day one of this first npower test on 325/8 after 84 overs. Vaughan and Cook failed and made 23 between them before a fine partnership betwenn Pietersen and Bell helped England to 168. Pietersen holed out and Bell reached a marvellous century and produced a fifty partnership with Paul Collingwood until Collingwood went edging to the wicket keeper shortly followed by Bell for 110. Then Flintoff made 30 but Prior went first abll to give Collins a chance of a hat trick but Harmison survived. Harmison went shortly after for 2 and then Gayle bowled Flintoff to leave Hoggard and Simon Jones on 4 each not out.
Michael Holding: And as for the West Indies bowling it was awful in teh first two sessions but they got it together in this session. Collins was the worse but has somehow got 3 wickets with an economy over 4 and Gayle has picked up 2. Chris Gayle and Ian Bradshaw were the most consistent throughout the day although Bradshaw was not used in the evening session. Overall in the evening session England lost 5 wickets for just 116 runs. The West Indies will be pleased with their effort.
Michael Atherton: So overall a very even day thanks to the last session and England looking to recover by good bowling tomorrow. We will be back after the break with a look at Ian Bell's innings and an interview with him. Join us after the break.
Well, tbh, didnt have time to read through full now.. but will do it later this week.. Just traversed thru all the pages.. and one thing was clear.. " Brilliant effort and neat layout! " and it attracted me immediately.. keep up the great works.
David Gower: Right it is time for the analysis of all the days play now with Nasser and David Lloyd joining me. After that last session who would you say is in control of this match Nasser?
Nasser Hussain: I would have to say England despite the losing of 5 wickets in that last session. 325/8 is a good total and if the tail enders can frustrate the West Indians tomorrow morning and get the total up to 350 i would definitely say England. Also i think that England will like this track for their bowlers and Harmison and Flintoff could really test these batsmen.
David Gower: David what was the moment that stood out for you today? The Ian Bell century, Pedro Collin's 3 wickets or Kevin Pietersen's vibrant 81?
David Lloyd: I would have to say Ian Bell's cnetury. It was so brilliantly played. He was in no rush and he played his shots at the right times and didn't play any loose ones until the one which got him out on 110. It was a great start for him and i hope he can continue his great form.
David Gower: Right i understand down on the outfield Michael Holding is with Pedro Collins the man who took 3 wickets for the West Indies.
Michael Holding: Pedro a good day for you today. How did you feel you bowled and how is the atmosphere in the Windies locker room?
Pedro Collins: I felt alright out here today. Always in England the conditions take some adapting to but i am delighted to get three wickets even though i sometimes struggled with my lines and lengths. I will bowl a lot better and get no wickets on another day. I think in the locker room we are generally happy with how today has gone. I think with at lunch England being 200/3 we would ahve taken eight down by the end of the day so we feel we have a chance and we are dleighted with the character we have shown
David Gower: Right undoubtedly the star for England today was the centurion Ian Bell and if we look at his wagon wheel we can see he scroed the majority of his runs in the leg side.
Now we understand that Ian Botham is downstairs and he has Ina Bell with him.
Sir Ian Botham: Yes i am with Ian Bell, congratualtions on your century. What did you think of your kncok today and how do England feel about their performance?
Ian Bell: Well i was delighted. I felt like i played in a controlled way and made sure i didn't give my wicket away but also scored a few boundaries and kept the runs ticking over. Overall we are happy but obviously we would have preferred to be 4 or 5 down instead of 8 but that is waht happens in this game and tomorrow is a new day and it is the bowlers turn.
David Gower: There you have it all the analysis from this first npower test from me David Gower and the rest of the skysports team we will see you tomorrow for the second day of this wonderfully poised test match.
David Gower: Hello and welcome to the second day of this first npower test match between England and the West Indies at Old Trafford. England are looking well placed at 325/8 but the Windies showed what they could do with the ball last night. Along side me are Michael Atherton and David Lloyd. Michael firstly what will England's plans be for today?
Michael Atherton: Well firstly they will hope to get around 350 with the last remaining tail enders which would be a significant milestone and then they will want early and cheap wickets to put themselves on top in this match. I think Harmison and Flintoff will be the key men today for England.
David Gower: What do the West Indies have to do David today to put themselves on top?
David Lloyd: Well its quite simple really. They have to bat. Once their top order get in the lieks of Gayle, Lara, Sarwan and Chanderpaul could trouble England and they could at least level England's score or even better it. We will have to see i think it is going to be a fascinating day of play.
David Gower: Right well that is the pundits thoguhts, when we come back after the break it will be all action as the morning session on day two gets underway.
England vs. West Indies: 1st Test, Day Two, Morning Session LIVE!
David Gower: Right we are about ready for play to resume on day two of this first npower test with the West Indies looking to get the two remaining England wickets quickly and start batting. First in the commentary box for us today are Michael Holding and Nasser Hussain.
Nasser Hussain: Thanks David and welcome evryone watching all around the world. Today promices to be a cracker although there is rainf roecast for later on. It may not join us though so lets remain hopeful of a lot of play.
The first over passes with 2 scored of the last delivery moving England's score on to 327/8.
Michael Holding: Right the secodn over of the day to be bowled by Chris Gayle. Hoggard on strike. Oh great shot from the tail ender, timed to perfection that flies to the boundar from a leg glance. Hoggard gets the first boundary of the morning.
Nasser Hussain: We are in teh 86th over and it is Dillon to bowl to Simon Jones. Thats edged and Simon Jones is gone for 6. England are 333/9. The Windies have got one of the wickets early. Can they finish the innings off now?
Michael Holding: Listen to this ovation for everyones favourite cricketer the one and only Monty Panesar. I wonder if he will entertain the crowd here and frustrate the West Indians.
3 overs are bowled with England adding 10 runs moving the score onto 351/9
Nasser Hussain: Collymore being brought into the attack by Lara. He hasn't bowled at his best this test so far but can he get the final wicket? The answer is no he can't because that is another brilliantly timed leg glance for 4 from Matthew Hoggard.
6 more runs come off the rest of the over moving teh score onto 361/9. 2 more overs pass with 3 runs coming and Chris Gayle ready to bowl the next over.
Michael Holding: Gayle to bowl and that is four. Aerial shot from Hoggard and one bounce for a boundary and the Windies are starting to get frustrated. Hoggard facing again and this time he gest and easy single to deep square leg after they just put the man back. Monty Panesar now facing and he drives. He goes for a run but Hoggard sends him back and the bails are wipped off and Panesar is run out. That is it England are all out for 369 after frustrating the West Indies this morning. The last man to go is Monty Panesar for 13.
Nasser Hussain: Let's have a look at the England scorecard then. First off Cook and Vaughan were out cheaply but then there was a wonderful partnership between the eventual centurion Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen who made 81. Collingwood added 39 and Flintoff also got out in the 30's. Matt Prior went for a golden duck and the tail enders added valuable runs for England leaving them all out for a good total of 369.
Michael Holding: The West Indies bowlers found it hard on this batting track at Old Trafford but Pedro Collins amnaged to pick up three wickets despite being expensive with an economy of nearly five. Gayle and Dillon picked up two wickets each and Bradshaw and Collymore one each although Bradshaw was the best fast bowler for the West Indies. The team on top are definitely England.
Nasser Hussain: Overall the match summary then is that England are 369 all out after their first innings with Ian Bell scorin 110 and Kevin Pietersen 81 while the best West Inidies bowlers were Pedro Collins and Chris Gayle who took five wickets between them. We will be back after the break with the West Indian innings up to lunch on this second day of the first npower test match.
Michael Holding: Welcome back to Old Trafford where the West Indies are about to bat and Steve Harmison is ready to bowl the first over. The two batsamn for the West Indies are Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds.
Harmison bowls a maiden to start proceedings.
Nasser Hussain: Hoggard to bowl the second over then. Starts with five dot balls and here is his last ball to Gayle and that is hits strongly through the covers for a boundary. West Indies are 4/0.
Michael Holding: Harmison to bowl and that is a boundary from Hinds a leg glance and it races away to the square leg fence. The West Indies move onto 8/0.
Nasser Hussain: Matthew Hoggard about to bowl but it is raining and the umpires tell the players to get off as the pitch is covered by the groundspeople. That is a disappointment for this capacity crowd but i am hopeful we will get some play later on today.
Michael Holding: Here is a summary then the West Indies are 8/0 in reply to England's total of 369.
It turns out there is no play for the rest of day two and the skysports cricket team confirms that there will be no more cricket on day two and that however there is a much better forecast for tomorrows play.
