Story The Silent Planet tour

12 runs and 2 wickets remaining. This should one hell of a great test match. Until the last run is scored, I root for INDIA!!

England hang on to win the first match!!!

With just over an hour to play, and 2 wickets remaining, Matthew Hoggard, England's hero with the ball in their second innings, steered England to victory in the first match of the inaugral Silent Planet Tour. There was poetic justice too as the winning run was an edge that flew past Patel down to 3rd man. What goes around comes around! A hugely entertaining game captivated the crowd until the very end. India can consider themselves unlucky to lose this one - the turning point probably being Ganguly's dismissal in the second innings.

Over to Ritchie with the press conference:

RB: Um, yes, and er, Saurav, er, unlucky - close game. What was the er deciding factor do you think?

SG: Yes a very exciting game. I think our batting let us down in the second innings and I feel I was the main culprit. Still that's cricket. On another day, Anil's match bowling of 9 for... would have won us the contest. We've got New Zealand next, so we'll go and regroup and come out strong for that game.

RB: Thanks, er Saurav, and er, well played. Lets turn to England's skipper.A very errr hard fought win there Michael.

MV: Thanks. Good cricket in patches from both sides, although our middle order let us down in both innings. Good knocks from the Jones' in etiher innings, and Marcus had a storming game. Its just one match though, and a long hard summer ahead of us. We'll celebrate tonight, and then get ourselves ready for the Australia game at Trent Bridge.

RB: Thanks Michael. Now to the er man of the err match. Some good bowling from Kumble and err Giles, and Hoggard's spell in the second innings helped er check the Indian total. Tendulkar and er Ganguly batted well in India's 1st innings, but for a splendid er 2nd innings century, and a match total of 179, the man of the match is Marcus er Trescothick.

And good luck to both teams in their next games.

So, England lead the table with 5 points - unsurprising as they are the 1st team to have won. India hold 2nd place with 1 point. I assume run-rates and bonus points will play their part in this tournament - just don't know exactly how.

The next "live" report comes when Australia take on England in Nottingham. Other scores will probably appear on tele-text as they have been played. Here's some stats and tables from the 1st match.

Trescothick and Flintoff helped guide England to victory. The Joneses dug in towards the end to stem the mini collapse.

Nobody was particularly expensive, although both Pathan and Agarkar struggled to find their line against the left-handers. Kumble, as stated before was simply superb.

Oops!! Damn it.. Anywayz, a great test match! Was fun reading it. India fought valiantly and may be, 20-30 more runs would have made the difference

Phew! That was nerve-wracking stuff - I think I've calmed down now. Thanks again for all your comments. It was nice to see everyone getting involved. I tend to agree with you about the runs, Saisrini - it was hard enough towards the end of the innings. Another 20 would have been very hard to get. It also helped that no slips were in place for much of the end of the innings and 2 or 3 edges went for runs instead of (possibly) being wickets.

Each team plays 8 matches in total, so there's plenty of time left to get into the top 2 positions. Hopefully the other matches in the group will be just as close.

The other games are the results of the "continue" button in the tournament section. I will post brief updates so you can follow the progress of your team in the tournament.

Unfortunately, as the world-series (on which this championship is based) is ODI, and these games are 5-day, I don't think I can access the player stats screens - unless its just waiting for each time to have played the same number of games - we'll see.

Some England records were set today and are listed below. (These are obviously from the "hall of fame" section of the user profile).

Game 2: Australia vs South Africa at Bristol

I can't give you pitch or weather or toss details as none are given to me. I can tell you, however, that Australia won a very close, topsy-turvey game by 6 runs.

I conclude, therefore, that they batted 1st and made 199 all out. Martyn top scored with 48 and Ntini weighed in with 4 / 77. In response, South Africa made 202, with no batting performances of note. Gillespie had 4 / 38 from 17.4 overs. Excellent bowling.

It looks as though the pitch improved for Australia's 2nd innings. They made a respectable 259 all out - Lehman top scoring with 60. Adams picked up 3 tail-end wickets, and 2 run outs did not help Australia's cause.

Requiring 256 to win, South Africa were dismissed for 250 - just 6 runs short. Kallis struck in with 65 and all bowlers contributed to the Australia victory.

Game 3: India vs New Zealand at Edgbaston

India took on New Zealand at Edgbaston. India were looking to bounce back from their narrow defeat by England but now have lost 2 out of 2 as New Zealand won by 54 runs. The kiwi's led off with 293 all out - Fleming topping the scoring with 55. Kumble, England's nemesis bowled only 6 overs and was kept wicketless. India responded with 363 all out. Tendulkar being run out for 73, and Cairns taking a 5 for.

Good all round batting in the 2nd innings saw New Zealand make 299 all out - Fleming top scoring again - this time being run out for 66. Requiring around 230 to win, India stumbled to 175 all out. Tuffey led the attack, and both Tendulkar and Ganguly failed in the 2nd innings. At one point, India were 130 / 1 - losing their last 9 wickets for just 44. This is the second time that India have let a 1st innings lead slip.

At this point, England seem to be leading the group, although their run-rate is less than that of 2nd place Australia. Next match is the battle of the 1st placed teams.

Game 4: Australia vs England at Trent Bridge

The "top of the table clash" in Nottingham has been under threat. A typical English spring has arrived and its been belting down with rain for the last few days. Consequently the pitch is still green (great - just to continue the trend that's been appearing in other threads of extremely low-scoring games) and the skies are grey with a large chance of umbrellas being required before the day is out.

Whoever wins the toss has a huge advantage this match. We're assured by the groundsman that the green surface will only persist for some of today, so a low-scoring couple of sessions are forecast.

As the "away" captain, Vaughn calls "Tails". The queen's nether regions are visible (so to speak) and Ponting is last seen wandering to the dressing room, shaking his head and muttering "I'll give you 'Never bl**dy fails you pommy b{lost in the howling gale}".

Judging by previous efforts on a green track, if Australia can even survive until lunch on the 1st day, they will be doing well! It then depends on when the green tinge fades and the "normal" pitch comes into play. (See house rules - post #2)

Both sides are unchanged from their previous matches in the tournament. A case of "if it aint broke...".

I sense a draw is a very unlikely result here, unless we have rain of biblical proportions.

Let Battle Commence!

RB: Lunch and err there is a huge buzz here at err Trent Bridge. Favourable bowling conditions or not, you've err still got to errrr put the ball in the right place, and England have certainly done that. Australia are in serious trouble here at errr 73 / 8. Taking us through the morning's play is err Geoffrey Boycott. Afternoon Geoff

GB: Afternoon Ritchie. Afternoon everyone. Matthew Hayden aside, Australia were rubbish this morning. No fight, no backbone, no application, just rubbish. Hayden hasn't looked troubled once. He's hit 6 boundaries - all classy shots. He's 42 not out and worth every penny. Application. Look at the others. Langer out wafting in the 1st over. Ponting edges to slip. Rubbish. This is the number 1 side in the world? Rubbish!

GB: Martyn edges to slip 1st ball. Rubbish. And someone tell me what Lehmann was doing! Cover driving a straight ball. He deserved to be bowled. Rubbish.

Incidentally, if anyone can tell me what setting I can adjust to stop them cover driving dead straight balls, please let me know. Very frustrating. It's meant to be a test match!!!

GB: Katich more wafting. Gilchrist should know better than to play across the line on this sort of pitch.

Are there are tours at the moment where the Aussies are actually beating England? :p

Presumeably something to do with the 'ball is hitting offstump therefore play...' (BallStump 2 setting)

GB: Brett Lee caught hooking? What was he thinking? Get a single and get Hayden on strike. He'll get you runs. Application Ritchie. App...

Well - there we must leave Geoffrey and Ritchie and return for the second session. I wish Geoffrey wouldn't sit on the fence so much. Say what you mean man!!!

Anyway, Australia could do with batting for as long as possible just to eat up some time. Alternatively, getting out quickly now would allow them the chance to bowl on this erratic wicket. It still looks pretty green to me, and the weather is still cool and grey.

I have a feeling the tables will be turned when I get into bat - probably later in this session. McGrath especially is usually a 'mare to face.

It's odd though, that all of a sudden, the Aussies are vulnerable, and there have been a lot of very low scoring games involving them!

Edit # 1 : Cheers for the BallStump thing - I will check that out. I don't mind bowling the guys as it happens rarely, but that is a bit soft. At least Gilchrist played a "realistic" shot to a leg stump ball.

EDIT # 2 : Nope. BallStumps is set to 1 - Ball missing off stump. Maybe he just got confused.
