The Last Time They Met
Australia vs England - ODI
The last ODI Fixture between Australia and England was one that all English fans will remember for a long time.
It was the ICC Champions Trophy 2004, held in England. Both England and Australia had got through thier group by beating Sri Lanka and New Zealand respectively. It was the 21st September 2004 and England and Australia arrived outside Edgebaston, Birmingham on a cold morning, Edgebaston had, just 2 days earlier, seen hundreds upon thousands of Indian and Pakistan fans flock there for their group game.
Ricky Ponting and Michael Vaughan met for the toss and to the delight of all the English fans Vaughan won it, and he decided to send the Australians in to bat.
Steve Harmison struck after just 7 overs, Matt Hayden edged him to Marcus Trescothick at 1st slip for just 17. Darren Gough then took a big wicket, one of the most dangerous batsman in the world, Adam Gilchrist was dismissed for just 37, and Australia were 69-2 with captain Ponting and Damien Martyn at the crease.
Ponting was caught by Gough off Giles just after the 25 over mark leaving the score at 114/3, however this was the start of Michael Vaughan's masterful section of the match, which started by bowling Lehmann for 38, then with a great direct hit, he ran out Andrew Symonds for a duck, then he finished off his demoliton of the Australian 4,5 and 6 by getting Damien Martyn caught by Trescothick, it was however, only after Martyn had made 65. Vaughan had reduced Australia from 189/3 to 210/6 and as captain he had got the whole team fired up.
Brett Lee was bowled by Gough and then Gillespie suffered the same fate next ball. In came Darren Gough to bowl, on a hatrick, it was a yorker but Michael Kasprowicz dug it out and saved the hatrick. Young Michael Clarke had been going well, and was out in the last over for 42. McGrath and Kasprowicz were on there own at the end, unbeaten on 0. The final Australian score was 259-9. All of the bowlers bowled well, in particular Gough(7-1-48-3) and Vaughan (10-0-42-2).
Trescothick and Solanki came out looking confident, but Solanki fell in the 5th over, lbw to Jason Gillespie. However Trescothick and Michael Vaughan put on 100 for the 2nd wicket both of them playing great shots on their way to 80's. There were quite a few bowling variations in the attempt to break up the partnership; Darren Lehmann had a bowl but in the end it was the offspin of Andrew Symonds that spoiled the party, he bowled Marcus Trescothick for 81, it had been a great partnership between Michael Vaughan, the England captain and Marcus Trescothick, the vice-captain, they had put on 140 for the 2nd wicket, and needing 99 in 29 overs, England looked on top.
It was 11 overs before Vaughan fell, for a fantastic 86, caught by Hayden off the bowling of Brett Lee and England looked certain to win. Flintoff fell for 16, caught in the slips for Lee. In all of this, there was Andrew Strauss who stayed firm and made his 50 and then slipped through the winning runs. England had made 262-4 and had 27 balls to spare.
Michael Vaughan, the England and winning captain picked up the Man of the Match award for his 86 along with 2 wickets and a run out.
Let's hope that the match that we will see at the MCG will be as exciting as this match at Edgebaston.
This was a change from the norm in England vs Australia ODI's, and quite a show. However this was nothing compared to the drama that we were going to see in 4 days time at The Champions Trophy Final.
