Saturday morning. My alarm clock goes of waking me up. I was feeling pretty tired after 2 days of solid cricket and went for a long shower. After I had finished I caught a look at my alarm clock.
OH MY GOD IT'S 10:00
I was meant to be at the pitch an hour ago. Play would be starting in 1 hour. I flew into my clothes and lept into my car. I was speeding so obviously and I am sure I got a speeding ticket from one of those damn speed cameras. I screeched into the car park, ran out of the car into main reception, ran back out because I forgot to lock it and then moved towards the video room. I had been told that they were all watching highlights and analysing them. I pushed open the doors trying to be quiet but tripped over the bin, making a hell of a lot of noise. The coach's voice rang out:
"Thank you for finally joining us Tom. Any reason why you are late" "Sorry coach, I slept in." "Well as it is your first time, I'll let you off, but if it happens again, you'll be in the 2XI for the rest of the season." "Ok coach. Thanks coach."
I quietly slid into a seat next to Cooky. We had been looking and comparing our bowling from the first session to the last session. We had all sorts of graphs out and it was really highlighting how accurate we were to finish with.
Eventually we finished and headed out to warm up. We still had one more wicket to get before we could bat. This might be a good thing as it would mean we wouldn't have to bat to early on, under too much cloud cover. Eventually the final batsmen appeared and we got in a huddle. The skip starting speaking:
"Ok boys, once we get the last wicket, we have a really good chance of posting a big total. They are only slightly in the lead, so we can easily chace that down."
Martin would be bowling. And with his third ball, he clean bowled Pretorius. Warwickshire were 261 All Out. Not a bad bowling performance. Key and David ran ahead of us to get their pads on ready to bat.
The rest of us walked in more slowly. It was still overcast and the weather had said there was a good chance of rain. As we arrived back in the pavillion, Rob and David walked back out fully padded up. Both were in need of big scores as so far this season they had been very weak.
As I was walking up to the balcony, I heard a massive "HOWZAT" There was a big cheer. I jogged up the rest of the stairs to see the skip walking back. The handy little TV was on and I saw his dismissal. Trying to play a full ball of his legs, he had missed it and been plum LBW. Another duck for him. There was a pretty gloomy atmosphere on the balcony. Martin started to head out. He had been in good touch recently, so hopefully he could finally make his half-century.
Martin and David did look to be going along quite nicely. They struck a few boundaries and the partnership began to grow. Soon they had got 40 runs on the board. I watched as Pretorius bowled a short ball. Martin tried to clip it of his hips. It hit the helmet of Nick Knight at bat pad, flew high in the air and Knight caught it!! Martin was out for 20, and that was really bad luck. Darren was the new batsman and I was next in. Our top order had been quite weak. We needed Darren and David to do well.
As Martin appeared I went over and had a word with him.
"You should get Nick Knight to choose your lottery numbers tonight. The lucky guy. Bad luck mate, though. You did seem in good touch."
Martin laughed at what I said and then: "Ah well. At least I won't be getting any more bad luck this season."
Darren and David did seem to bat a lot more defensively now with two wickets down. The score crept along very slowly. Eventually the umpires called Lunch on Day 3. We were 71/2 with David looking in very nice touch. Darren had also done quite well, weathering the relatively new ball, pretty well. Here is the scorecard.
(I know it says Day 1)
Although we had 71 runs on the board, we only had a lead of 43 runs. This partnership would need to be big. The skip and coach talked to us during lunch.
"Ok boys. David and Darren are batting very nicely out there. Keep up the work in the next session. Tom as the next batsman it is key you get yourself in. If we lose you quickly we are in danger of suffering a collapse. The pitch is pretty reliable, but is cracking up in some places, so watch out for it. Just play sensibly next session."
We looked to be in a solid position. Hopefully we could maintain our momentum.
:laugh the story line is great. Well, whatever the position of the match may be, its never a good sign of going late that too with reason, " Slept off! " Coach should have been really a soft hearted fellow.
So it was Lunch and David and Darren were doing really well. I was pretty relaxed sitting up there on the balcony. The cloud had begun to clear and it was a pretty fine day. Over lunch the atmosphere had been very light and Cooky had been enetertaining us with his jokes about a blonde he met last night (We all know it's rubbish ) Eventually the umpires came up and told us that play would be starting in 5 minutes. David and Darren started to head out.
David had looked to be the batsman in form as play resumed. Darren was playing a very solid innings, getting himself really used to the conditions. David on the other hand began to hit out quite a bit and the runs began to flow. Eventually these two passed the 50 partnership, with David dominating it, with Darren contributing just 13 runs.
Soon after the 50 partnership was reached, David made his first half-century of the season. It had come of 83 balls, and he had played shots all over the ground. For a man in such fine touch we were expecting him to go on and play an important knock.
Things looked to be slipping out of Warwickshire's hands. Their captain Streak, and his bowlers, could not seem to find a breakthrough and these two just kept on scoring runs. Eventually they passed the 100 partnership. Everyone on the balcony rose to their feet and cheered them. These two had played really well. Although the score was 140/2, we actually only led by 112 runs. However these two looked like they would not be easily removed.
It eventually took the best ball of the match to remove Darren. Darren had been playing very well for his 33. He had played himself in nicely and had recently started to play some very nice shots. Pretorius pitched one on his middle stump, quite full. It seamed right away from him, just flicking the edge of Darren's bat and flew to Knight at first slip, who took an easy catch. I was now in!!!! I had been lazing around on the balcony and had not prepared myself mentally to be going in. Eventually though I was ready and had calmed myself down. The score was now 156/3.
It seemed that where I was batting I always seemed to arrive when there was lots of pressure on me. I just wanted to play a nice knock. I had a lot of time to play myself in and with David at the other end doing so well, I did not have any pressure to play any big shots too early on. Nothing could go wrong
