I was all over the place. This had been the most eventful week in my life and that was saying something. I had no idea what to think. I mulled my thoughts over while eating my lunch of lasagne. No one disturbed me as they could see I was deep in thought. Eventually the catering staff cleared our lunch away and the skip stood up:
"Right team. Excellent session. We bowled extremely well and I was very impressed by the spirit. However it is not over yet. Powell and Troughton are two solid batsmen and we need their wickets. More of the same in this session as in the last and we will be fine. Anyone want to say anything else? Ok let's get ready."
Can these two thwart us?
As everyone got up, the skip suddenly said.
"Tom, a word please. *I walked over*
Cooky was telling me you spoke to Botham. I noticed him arrived midway this morning and he has been watching you closely. My advice would be to block it out and try and play your natural game. Ok?"
"Yeah, that's cool skip. Cheers."
I hurried of to catch up with the others. Eventually it was quarter to two and the umpires arrived telling us to head out. The stadium was full now. Obviously everyone had heard this was going to be an exciting finish and had turned out to watch us play. I had quite a few butterflies in my stomach now and felt pretty nervous.
Our bowlers did a good job to begin with, restricting the runs but no wickets. Eventually these two started hitting out smashing bowlers all over the ground. The score was falling out of control!!!!!! Trott was nearing his half-century with the score on 139/3.
We got the breakthrough finally. The skip had been forced to go defensive and had employed quite a few sweepers. Trott trying to smash Martin for six back over his head did not quite time it and Jimmy took a good catch in the deep. We had got a crucial wicket.
I had yet to be given a bowl this session but the skip had said I would be used soon. I was down on the boundary at fine leg doing some autographs for the kids, and trying to keep myself loose. I saw Martin bowl Powell a bouncer he attempted to hook it, it went flying up into the air into the sun.
"TOM, CATCH IT!!!!!"
I couldn't see it in the sun, I was panicking desperately searching the skies. I saw it suddenly, a little dot of red. I quickly ran to my left. I was in a good position to take this catch. Could I do it?
YES I DID!!! :happy
I spread my legs apart to balance myself and took the ball guiding it, into my chest. 142/5. We had got the two danger men out and we were celebrating. Martin came running up to hug me. It was a great atmosphere.
As I headed back to the boundary the skip shouted that I would be bowling next over. Everyone in the crowd behind me wished me luck and said I would do an excellent job. I warmed my body up as Martin finished his over. The umpires made a correction to the score saying that Warwickshire had been awarded an extra two runs. I gave my cap and jumper to the umpire and began to measure my run-up out. The skip threw me the ball. I saw it was getting pretty worn on the crown side but the other side was pretty shiny. I was hoping for some reverse swing.
I would be bowling at Heath Streak the captain and Piper the wicket-keeper. I really wanted revenge on Streak as he had got me out both times when I was batting. I decided that with the weather and ball conditions I would bowl quite full and look for the edge. Martin came over and I told him what I thought. I respected his views due to him being the senior bowler and he agreed with me.
The first four deliveries were uneventful, each time Streak showed me the dead bat. The fourth ball I tried to bowl a yorker but put it too full, he smashed it back over my head. I knew David had put a fielder back on the boundary I looked around
"CATCH IT!!!"
Darren was the fielder on the boundary. I wasn't sure if it was going for six or if it would fall to Darren. Would I get my second wicket or is this the beginnng of a recovery for Warwickshire?
