India vs South Africa at Pune

First ODI - India vs South Africa at Pune

Welcome to Pune for the first Titan Cup ODI between India and South Africa. Things looking festive here at Pune with fans of both sides eagerly anticipating a big clash between these two top ODI teams. South Africa led by Hansie Cronje clearly look the favorites going by their recent ODI form but India on their home ground are no easy nuts to crack. This is going to be a big series which will be closely watched from most of the fans from other nations.

Pitch Report

Ravi Shastri is down with the pitch report. "This is going to be a spinner's paradise. Notice the cracks outside the batsman's off stump widening. As the match progresses, these cracks will visibly crack up and should provide some uneven bounce and turn. The team that wins the toss should ideally bat first!

Toss

Arun Lal with the two captains, Tendulkar and Cronje. Cronje wins the toss and thats a surprising decision - to bowl first. Here's what Cronje said "We have a formidable batting line up and we think if we can restrict India to a total of 220, we can chase it down pretty easily. And we think we are better chasers.

Tendulkar feels surprised and satisfied at Cronje decision. "I thought he would have batted first. Anyways, this is a good opportunity for us. We should ideally put up a 250+ total and then apply pressure on the South Africans. Should be a very interesting game!

Commentary

S.Gavaskar: Oh no!!! Thats gone. The Indian captain is gone!!!! Tendulkar is bowled by Mc Millan for 1. Thats a big wicket for South Africa.

Arun Lal: Oh gosh!! Thats a big blow for India to start with. Tendulkar, who is the captain of the side, is a prize wicket for any bowling line up. He could hve set up the tempo of the innings with his batting. But now, South Africa have seized the first initiative. Azharuddin joins Ganguly at the crease.

S.Gavaskar: Good sensible batting from Azhar-Ganguly to take India to 8/1 after 3 overs.

Yes. He played in the Titan Cup 1996 though he didnt play from the first.. Ganguly made his debut in 1996 against England in England. Titan Cup 1996 came only after that series. Dravid and Ganguly both are part of the team in the Titan Cup

Can some one make me the Reebok bat that Azhar used when he played cricket? here is a pic of azhar batting with it

India 67/2 - 15 overs

Azhar stands tall as India post a sedate 67/2 after 15 overs

Md.Azharuddin 41*
Navjot Sidhu 6*
S.Ganguly 19

A good bowling performance from South Africa saw them restrict India to a run rate below 5 runs per over in the first 15 overs. But that could deter Azhar from scoring at a free clip. Azhar was in sublime touch today with his stunning wrist flick shots on the leg side of the wicket and some stupendous cover drives that bisected the fielders into the boundary.

Ganguly and Azhar put up a good partnership rotating the strike. The boundaries were hard to come by. So both of them kept the scoreboard moving with one's and two's. Just when one thought Ganguly would survive till the 15th over, De Villiers stuck removing Ganguly for 19. Ganguly tried to flick the ball on the leg side but the ball was too quick that it thudded into his pads before he could play the shot and he was trapped LBW.

Sidhu joined Azhar and took India to the first 15 over field restriction mark. Pat Symcoox bowled a few overs and proved everyone how dangerous this wicket is when the spinners operate. The ball starting spinning a mile and both Sidhu and Azhar had no clue how much the ball would spin. Still, they survived. Azhar played a great shot when he hoisted De Villiers for a straight four down the ground.

oh pat symcox welcome back. how weve missed you. i just love these old threads. SAI way to go 1996. frank worrell trophy, titan cup. world cup. what a year it was. go the boks here as well. a team with hansie in it cant possibly lose ;) haha.
who had the most money this game? azharudin or cronje? we will find out soon hahaha

Yes good to see Azhar do well here. The way he used his wrists was just amazing.

India have made a decent start here, but they might have to increase the RR in the next fifteen overs and at the same time not lose too many wickets. And with Dravid, Jadeja and Mongia in the team, they have a good chance of posting a good score here.

ha ha.. lets see who gets the most money MWaugh...

I am just loving to play these matches.. With the exact kits and the exact player rosters, it gives me the same feel of watching the original Titan Cup 1996. It was my first full ODI series that I watched. I was in Orissa, India then and lived in a government quarters (those who dont know what it is; its a housing colony of a particular company who hire workers and give them houses to stay!). After the India-Australia semifinal and India-South Africa final, we burst crackers in our colony to celebrate India's win. How amazing those days were?

if you all are enjoying this, first thank dazza for re-creating this titan cup.. the kits are utterly mind blowing.. hey siddarth, i think u have the power for putting the kits in the downloads section? why dont you do it? it would be great!!!
