Cricket Australia has less than nine months to prepare its bid to stage the 2011 World Cup as it vies with the subcontinent to stage the game's showpiece event.

The International Cricket Council said after its board meeting concluded in Sydney yesterday that a decision on the venue would be made at its annual conference in London in July - putting Australian and sub-continental interests on notice to mount their campaigns.

Australia had been widely expected to be host under the unofficial rotation system used for many years to allocate the event, having last held it in 1992. The subcontinent last staged the cup in 1996 and would normally have been expected to be in the running to hold it again in 2015.

However, a push has come from India to have every third World Cup held on the subcontinent because of the vast amounts of revenue the region brings world cricket. Former ICC president Jagmohan Dalmiya is driving a campaign for the event to be held in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in 2011.

As expected, the ICC's International Development Board yesterday made no decision on the host of the 2011 tournament. It did, however, agree to a new formalised process under which countries or regions will bid to stage major cricket events to be held after the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies - the end point of the ICC's current agreement with marketing partner, the Global Cricket Corporation.

An ICC spokesman said the new bidding process would require prospective hosts to more officially table the possible merits of holding major events in their country or region, including possible tax exemptions for tournament organisers. They would also need to formally detail playing facilities, travel and accommodation standards, and any possible visa complications for players visiting from certain countries.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland yesterday said he was confident Australia could host an "excellent" World Cup in 2011.

Although the atmoshphere in Australian cricket grounds is fantastic I would like to have it in the Sub-continent !!! One thing is the financial boost and secondly would love to see the Titans like Australia bat on sub-continent pitches :D !!! I can imagine how the crowd would react in an Indo-Pak world cup match at Lahore !!! That would be sweet !!! ;)

Atmosphere wise the Sub continent have that well and truely wrapped up.

One positive is the MCG will be 100,000 capacity and Telstra stadium can get around 80,000.

Does Telstra Stadium reduce in capacity when it goes into cricket mode?
Also never seen AAMI stadium so that would be interesting seeing cricket there.

ACT also have one which is below 20,000.

Indeed mate. During the Sydney 2000 Olympics the capacity was 118,000 - now only about 80,000. :)
Or do you mean even smaller than 80,000. (reduce it even more?)

It was 110,000 to be exact. :D I am sure I read somewhere that they had to reagrrange something to get the stadium into cricket mode. I can't remember if this reduces the capacity.

Telstra Stadium certainly won't be decreasing its capacity.
