Well, the main problem in Vaughan retiring from ODI cricket is the fact that the side may be torn between two mindsets, gameplans and may get confused with what their role in the side is when they are under two methods of leadership. He probably doesn't deserve his spot in the one-day arena and it would allow him to focus on test cricket I suppose, but at least persisting with him maintains the sort of consistency, mentality and the same team environment that has worked insync with success.
But, if he does go, they all know each other well enough to be able to adapt, and Flintoff is an inspirational figure that could fill the role very well, but, naturally, it'd be hard to change under those certain confusions.
I agree, Giles is a key player and an integral part of the side now, he's worked hard to establish himself and alot of england's success is a result of his input, of which many are blind to. He takes important wickets and has learnt the trade of consistency, along with experience, and Panesar won't be able to fill that immediately with only a few domestic matches to his name.
