West Indies touch down in India

After a long flight from the Caribbean which stopped off at first Heathrow and then diverted to Mumbai due to bad weather at Nagpur, the West Indian team finally arrived at their hotel, looking very tired and severely jet lagged. There was heightened security around the team, with armed body guards escorting the team coach and the players all the way to the hotel and the training ground. Chris Gayle was his typical self and didn't look bothered by all this in the slightest, though a couple of the younger guys did look a bit put out by all the attention.

There were a small group of Indian children waiting by the team's hotel and Chanderpaul, Edwards and Sarwan signed a few autographs and gave the kids a memory they could cherish to the grave.

Extra security around the team made for a slightly cooler reception then normal

After a couple of days of gentle working out in the gym, the Windies players finally got down to training for their first match against India at the end of the week. England were due to play India in a couple of days and the Windies players would certainly be watching that to see what sort of form both teams were in, and how the conditions in India would affect the players.

However, for the moment they concentrated on their training. Their was a slight scare in training when it was thought Sarwan had done a serious injury to his back, however, the news from the West Indies camp is that it is just a small strain and should not affect him playing in the first match. Apart from that, everything else appeared to be clicking for the West Indies team as the players put 100% effort into training and the journalists at the West Indies training camp, could see the Windies meant business.

A few jittery minutes when the nature of Sarwan's injury was unknown whilst Benn works on his action. Colin Stuart was also showing that even the old boys could put down a decent delivery ;)

The nature of the way the Windies squad had set out training was going to cause a few problems for Gayle and Williams as they had to try and pick a playing XI by the end of the week and going by the way the team was performing in training there were going to be some tough decisions. First things first though, was India vs England and that is sure to be an interesting encounter!

An excellent thought.. I am likig your story once again.. KIU Mate...

1st ODI: India vs England at Kolkata - Start time: 10:30
Live with Channel 9

So it was time for the 1st ODI between England and India at Kolkata. Both teams have been training hard for this opening match as there is certainly a bit of rivalry between the two teams as England were behind India's removal from the 20/20 World Cup last year which was a slap in the face for the nation which has taken to 20/20 like a duck to water.

Out in the middle Andrew Strauss won the toss on a dry pitch and elected to put India in to bat first, citing the fact that he felt more comfortable chasing on the pitch. This might have been a bit of a risky ploy considering India have the spin twins of Harbhajan Singh and Jadeja, plus Yuvraj, all who will be looking forward to bowling on this surface.

There are how the two sides line up:

India

Sehwag
Tendulkar
Gambhir
Kohli
Yuvraj Singh
Raina
Dhoni (C) (wk)
Jadeja
Harbhajan Singh
Zaheer Khan
Sreesanth

and for England:

England

Strauss (C)
Trott
Pietersen
Collingwood
Morgan
Prior (wk)
Wright
Broad
Swann
Mahmood
Anderson

The Indian batting line-up certainly looks very strong although they might be a seamer too short and will be hoping that Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan keep it tight with the new ball. The spinners are going to be the key for India in the middle overs, hopefully pinning the England batsmen back in their chase.

Meanwhile the England batting line-up, maybe looks a batsman short. They surely must have been tempted to play Ian Bell, but they have opted for Luke Wright who also gives them the extra bowling option. Only time will tell if this was the right decision!
