What makes Australia so damn good?

It's a combination of many things from the weather, a populace that enjoys the outdoor, national pride and some great sporting infrastructure.

Also, there is the determined Aussie mentality and a little bit of luck thrown in as well.

But, like anything, it's not going to last forever.
Some major drought in good coaches/talent is bound to happen, be it in the next decade or half century.

Good competition in the state sides, good physique, weather as AA mentioned.

Normally when a strong team like Australia lose it they might lose it for about 4 years and then by then those 25 yr old(youngsters in cricket)they are 29 and nearly at their peak so we may lose it for a little while but soon they will come back up again

They do have an awesome setup for the State Season! So Compettitve

i think its more than just cricket.

As kids we are brought up with so many sports happening around us (AFL, rugby, cricket, basketball, soccer etc) and through school we play these sports and get coached through sporting programs, and then physical activity is encouraged and promoted throughout high school with awesome inter school sports competitions, and then not mentioning the compulsory athletic and swimming days secondary schools have to have. Then once teen years come we have these skills all muddled together. Where as other countries might not have the same opportunities to play as much sport as we do.

Then the media might be another factor. So much attention is put onto sport and sporting events. Its hard to find a role model for a kid who isn't an athlete

If you look at some players the Australian team (i forget exactly who) they had to make a decision in their teen years whether or not to continue with another sport which they were state reps in, or cricket. So that proves they just were'nt technically brilliant in cricket, they were just overall good at sport

In summer in Aus, nearly everyone plays cricket. In winter, nearly everyone plays rugby or AFL.

But yes, Stevo is absolutely right. There are so many players that could have easily gone on to other sports and been superstars and vica versa. I know a few AFL players that are guns at cricket and could've played at state level. I think Luke Hodge is one.

Yeah it's all about how you grow up , how many clubs for the sport there is or wheter or not the school gives the kids the option of playing the sport that's pretty much why South Africa is so good at rugby( well not the best but pretty good ) cause thats our number one sport and you start to play tackle rugby at the age of 8 years and then we also have our second favourite sport cricket wich we also start to play at a very young age.

to me it starts at the top, from the natioanl cricket baord. since i started folowing cricket i have never heard of ausie players going against their board like some players do in other countries. the players never disagree with their pay like lets say the windies, and when a player is droped he realises that hes not good enough and he just shuts up unlike players from other countries. this all to me helps the 11 players that are on the field kepp their mind on the game and thats all they concentrate on, they have good chemistry and love to hear their side always being mentioned as the best team in the last 10-12 years.

Its so simple to answer the thread's title,

They play like a team with Positive attitude, aggressive cricket, with complete determination/commitments whatsoever the situation may be and win like a team.

" Champion always do the things in different ways! ". Thats it. :)

Just for example, If we take India-Australia last series, there was no complete 100% commitments towards the game from Indian side like Dravid playing for some name sake... RP Singh running and delivering something so called that white ball while bowling :p etc etc.

I remember the commentator saying, " If you are gonna beat these World Champs(Aussies), you have to give more than 100% through out these 100 Overs. Its not enough if you outclass them just for a while alone." ( when we lost one of the ODIs chasing > 300 ).

I would say, SouthAfrica and SriLanka next to Aussies because they also more or less play like a team almost in every game. If each and every player gives more than his 100% best(team effort), then we can have many Australian sides in cricket. ;)

thats the sort of thing that i was going at, before almost every series you hear about problems in the India,Pakista,West Indies sides while SAF and Australia keep it the same very time.

We struggle most against New Zealand and South Africa I reckon. They just have that never say die attitude when it comes to chasing big totals.

Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Steve Waugh, Glenn McGrath & Shane Warne.

Players like Justin Langer, Damien Martyn, Mark Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee & Jason Gillespie all benefitted from playing with these guys and fed off their ability and probably acchieved more then they would if they had've played in another country.

It won't last forever, I'm sure Australia will have weak times, but if the State competition keeps running the way it does at the moment, and all of the talent spotting systems remain in place, we'll spend more time at the top than we do at the bottom, and that's all you can really ask for.

Yeah.
Steve Waugh had to choose between Soccer and Cricket.
And his parents coached tennis, too.

Yeah, Australia have a lot of these confident players around their team in which believe they can win in almost any situation and that believe goes towards the other members in the team.

Other teams have one or two, such as Kevin Pietersen but they don't have as many of them as Australia do.

Apart from that they are able to produce good cricketers from the methods such as Stevo has said buy playing a number of sports over the year.
