World Test Team

He has a FC average of 35, what makes you think he'll do so well? You're not even Australian. Seems that Marsh's IPL success has given him a reputation he hasn't necessarily earned.

To judge a player, you don't need to be an Australian, do you?

His IPL success definitely proves his skill.

I bet he won't.

Jaques >>>>>>>>. Marsh. Marsh shouldn't be near the test team now, I think that Rogers bloke should be ahead of him in the pecking order.

Matthew Hayden
Virender Sehwag
Mahela Jayawardene (C)
Sachin Tendulkar
Shivn Chanderpaul/Kevin Pietersen
Mike Hussey
Kumar Sangakkara/MS Dhoni
Vettori
Brett Lee
Zaheer Khan
Muttiah Mularitharan

I'm liking the look of that.

I'd go with:

Hayden
Sehwag
Gambhir
Jaya (*)
Shiv
Hussey
Sanga (+)
Vettori
Mendis
Steyn
Zaheer

Ponting, Tendulkar, Smith, KP all narrowly miss on the batting spots. No allrounder, Freddie came close. Lee didn't make the bowling based on current form, and Murali, Anderson, Sidebottom and Clark will be the reserves. Dhoni the reserve keeper.

A slightly dubious side. Gambhir at 3 is a risk, but I think he can handle it. Hayden not in the best of form, but he's coming back. Sanga has to do keeping duties, but he isn't bad at it. And only two seamers in Zaheer and Steyn, and just 4 proper bowlers with Viru and possbly Hussey needing to turn their arm over. I figure Mendis could bowl on mostly any surface with his style, but picking him over Murali or another quick may be a risk. Vettori almost gave me the option to play another bowler, maybe I could drop one of Gambhir/Hayden and get Freddie in to balance things out. But overall, on current form, I think this is a good side. Tried to exclude some oldies as they are getting on the years and their performances have been a bit inconsistent. Players like Yousuf, Dravid, Dada, Laxman, Kallis, etc. Would have like to get some 'newer' players like Amla, Bell, Sidebottom, Ishant, etc. in, but they couldn't quite make it yet.

I presume you are talking about Jayawardene and not Jayasuriya?

I'm not liking Gambhir in there at three. He's a good opening batsman in tests, not sure how he'll fare at three. I'd rather have Jaya in at three, followed by Huss and Shiv, and then KP. But I would prefer to have Sachin in there.

Yes, Jayawardene.

Gambhir could do very well at three. He plays pace and spin equally well, his temperment has improved, and he has shown the ability to play cautiously and bat for time along with being able to score quickly when needed. Maybe he needs a bit more experienced, but overall he could do very well. Plus, imagine him batting with Hayden. We know he is lethal with Viru, but he could be deadly with Hayden. Hayden muscles the boundaries away, and Gambhir nudges the quick runs. Wonderful...

Although I am thinking about dropping Hayden, and bringing in Freddie. Then probably Shiv or Jaya will get the number 3 spot, the other gets 4, Hussey at 5, then followed by Sanga, Freddie, Vettori, Mendis, Zaheer, Steyn.

Smith
Hayden
Ponting
Pietersen
Hussey
Sangakkara (WK)
Flintoff
Harmison
Sharma
Mendis
Steyn

This is more of a form based Test Side. I would have liked to have put Chanderpaul in, but I needed space for Flintoff and a Keeper. I think a top 6 of Smith, Hayden, Ponting, Pietersen, Hussey and Sangakkara should do the business. Then you've got the best all-rounder in the world in Flintoff. Then it's the bowlers. You open with Sharma and Steyn, I think that would be a very good combination, with Sharma's height and seam movement with Steyns pace and swing. You've then got Harmison and Flintoff 1st change, the best 1st change partnership in the world. South Africa certainly couldn't handle it in the ODi's. Then the mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis who's been incredibly impressive.

Yea, Steyn = best in the world at the moment (Yes, even over Lee. Lee has been shocking in India). Although it could be the other way around in a few years if Sharma keeps going the way he has.

You just have to see Steyn bowl at his peak. Wonderful. Sharma is brilliant as well, but I keep having the feeling he is going to collapse soon, kinda like Irfan did. Steyn has already been down and come back. So I'm waiting for a while before putting Sharma as the best there is for now.

Steyn > Sharma
When did Cricketman say Sharma > Steyn? He just said he felt Steyn was overrated. Why did you have to bring India's favourite player into this? Why couldn't you just say 'Steyn is the best in the world ATM' or 'Steyn > Lee/Harmison/Anderson/Sidebottom/Taylor/Morkel/Asif'. Why the Indian bowler? Cricketman didn't even put Sharma in his best XI, he put Lee and Zaheer. Why do you have to pounce on every opportunity to start a debate against Indians? This is a common thread in most of your posts, you take a harmless statement and somehow turn it into an anti-Indian statement. Cricketman was never comparing Steyn to Sharma, why did you have to reply as though he was?

I don't know if I've been watching the wrong matches, but Steyn just seems to fire it in and not do much about it. He gets it to come back in at times but that's about it.

I think that you have been watching the wrong matches.

Morne Morkel > Steyn :p

OK maybe not. But I really like him.
