THREE DEPARTS AS ONE JOINS

Giourkas_Seitaridis.jpg

Sami Hyypia, Jermain Pennant and Lucas have all left the club. While Greek international Giorgos Seitaridis has joined the club. Sami Hyypia and Jermain Pennant have both joined other Premier League side while Lucas has been sent on loan to Middlesbrough.

Sami Hyypia who joined the club in 1999 for £2.6m made his debut against against Chelsea same year. But later today it has been confirmed that Hyypia has joined Tottenham Hotspur for £2.5m. Hyypia who made about three hundred appearances for Liverpool in his eight years at the club scored twenty-one times. Hyypia has also represented his international side Finland. Hyypia made his debut against Tunisia in 1992 and since has been capped only ninety-one times and scored five times.

Jermaine Pennant has been transferred to Newcastle United for a fee of £5.7m and has signed a three year contract with the club. Pennant moved to Liverpool from Birmingham City for £6.2m and since hasn't been at his level best. He has made twenty-one appearances for the club and has scored only three times including a stunner against Chelsea at Anfield. Pennant is yet to feature for England's National side but has made twenty-four appearances for England U-21 side.

As three players left the club one player came in the club. The Greek International Giorgos Seitaridis has joined Liverpool from Atletico Madrid for a transfer fee £10m. The Greek right back 27, has made forty-one starts for Atletico Madrid and scored only once. He was very influential in the clubs good campaign last season. Giorgos has been a major part of Greece National side. He made his international debut in 2002 against Sweden and since has played over sixty-one times and scored only once. He was one of the members of the Greek Side that won the UEFA EURO 2004 in Portugal.

Kevin keegan later spoke to liverpoolfc.tv - "I am delighted that we have signed Giorgos who is such a great full back. He is one of the best experience full backs you can get. He had a brilliant season with Atletico Madrid and prove his potential. He would surely solve our right back position now. Hyypia and Pennant are good players but they are not the kind of players that would win us the Premier League this season. Hyypia is in the evening of his career and doubted if he would play a single game this season. While Pennant has lost a lot of form since his arrival at the club maybe Newcastle United could bring his form back. Lucas in a great talet for the future. He is not yet ready for the English game and maybe he would get lot of experience on loan at Middlesbrough which will do a lot of good for the young kid."

What is Keegan doing? Getting rid of Reira, Arbeloa on free (!), Benayoun, N'Gog. He's lost his mind. Barry is a good signing, but getting rid of good first team players is a bad idea. Don't know the other signings, but I doubt they are world class players.

A good win in the Champions League qualifying away from home. I expect them to win with ease at Anfield.

KEEGAN OUT! :p

I agree I think that King Kev has lost his marbles! Shan, how do you get the "printable version" symbol thingy?

Or if you are using Internet Explorer you can just copy and paste the picture straight into the vBulletin compose thread box.

Seitaridis is a good signing, but I agree with trev, that Keegan has probably made some rash decisions.

Now Lucas and Hyypia? OK Hyypia might be a little slow but he was valuable and Lucas is a back up for when Masch goes hes a classic DM. Have you seen his stats on fm? 18 marking 16 tackling Good pace and passing etc. Cant believe Keegan let him go on loan.

LIVERPOOL 3-0 HULL CITY

_44553731_gall_lpool_getty.jpg

Goals from Giorgas Seitaridis, Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard secured Liverpool's opening day win of the new premier League season under new manager Kevin Keegan. The hosts, who had the better of a woeful first half, took the lead when Giorgas Seitardis headed Jamie Carragher's cross past Boaz Myhill in Hull City's goal. Dirk Kuyt added a second when he collected Fernando Torres's flick and drilled home. Hull City had two penalty shouts turned down before Liverpool were awarded one, which Gerrard dispatched.

Kevin Keegan was criticized for all the players sold by the club and he knew this match was right way to answer the critics. The Englishman made one changes to the side which won at Kobenhavn in midweek but that seemed to unbalance the team early on. Giorgas Seitaridis made his debut, deployed on the right of defence, looked particularly comfortable as Liverpool relied solely on Gerrard and Torres for any sort of attacking inspiration.

That played into the hands of Hull City, who tended to double up on both players, and the visitors were seldom troubled. Phil Brown's men showed little inclination to attack, however, allowing Liverpool to spend long periods camped in their half. It took 28 minutes for either side to muster an opportunity of any note, Xabi Alonso beating George Boateng and crossing for Torres to head straight at Myhill.

That was the only attempt on target in a dour first half. The home fans, who had come with high hopes on Kevin Keegan, were far from happy. To their relief, Liverpool played with greater urgency after the break and it was not long before they were rewarded. Carragher produced an excellent cross to the back post and Giorgas Seitardis who had went forward for a free kick rose above Joe Parkin to head past Myhill.

Robbie Keane was denied his first goal for the club when his acrobatic volley was well saved, before Parkin cleared his header off the line from Gerrard's corner. Hull were having difficulty coping with a rejuvenated Liverpool, and when Torres put Kuyt through with a neat header the Dutch striker made no mistake with a low finish to Myhill's right. On 73 minutes Daniel Agger appeared to block Geovanni's shot with an arm, only for referee Rob Styles to reject Hull City's protests.

Newly promoted Hull City this season, had another appeal turned down when Javier Mascherano's high foot connected with George Boateng's shoulder, while Marlon King poked over from close range. To rub salt in their wounds, Styles pointed to the spot after Xabi Alonso went down under Paul McShane's challenge two minutes from the end and Gerrard forced the ball home via Myhill's left hand.

*Liverpool manager Kevin Keegan

"Today's game will be answer all my critics. I am really proud of my team that played so well in the second half. I would like to thank the fans who were constantly supporting the team after we had a poor first half. Fan support makes a lot of difference in a game of football and today we had that which helped us to win the first game of the season."

*Hull City manager Phil Brown

"We felt they were penalties. But I didn't feel we were going to get those decisions today. I don't want it to sound like sour grapes but on another day I think they might been given our way. How we are going to do this season will depend on our home form. Anything we got today would have been a big bonus. We all knew Premier League is tough but today we experienced it ourselves."

LIVERPOOL QUALIFY FOR CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

_44259444_gerrard_pa.jpg

Liverpool midfield trio Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Gareth Barry all scored as Liverpool FC sealed their place in Thursday's UEFA Champions League group stage draw, beating FC Kobenhavn 5-2 on aggregate.

Trailing at the break to Steven Gerrard's 42nd-minute strike, the Danish champions equalized on the night through Marcus Allback 12 minutes after the restart. But parity was fleeting for Kobenhavn as Xabi Alonso netted two minutes later. Gareth Barry then rubber-stamped the English title contenders through to Champions League group stage draw 20 minutes from time.

Despite a 2-1 first-leg deficit, Kobenhavn were measured in their initial approach, opting to wait for the game to open up and then take control. However, their ploy failed as Liverpool broke the deadlock three minutes before half-time when Steven Gerrard seized upon a loose pass back towards his own goal by Lars Jacobsen and finished from inside the penalty area.

The visitors received fresh hope after the interval when Allback scored direct from his 20-metre free-kick, yet moments later Liverpool were back in front after Jamie Carragher's cross from the right was converted from close range by Xabi Alonso. Deflated, FC Koenhavn had no reply and Liverpool added a third on the 70-minute mark as Gareth Barry latched on to a ball from his fellow countryman Steven Gerrard and outpaced Michael Gravgaard to fire low into the bottom right-hand corner.

Spurs and Newcastle cant get a win here as well. Lol.

And Blackburn have a good record at home against Manure, so no surprises there.
