LIVERPOOL 3-0 HULL CITY
Goals from Giorgas Seitaridis, Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard secured Liverpool's opening day win of the new premier League season under new manager Kevin Keegan. The hosts, who had the better of a woeful first half, took the lead when Giorgas Seitardis headed Jamie Carragher's cross past Boaz Myhill in Hull City's goal. Dirk Kuyt added a second when he collected Fernando Torres's flick and drilled home. Hull City had two penalty shouts turned down before Liverpool were awarded one, which Gerrard dispatched.
Kevin Keegan was criticized for all the players sold by the club and he knew this match was right way to answer the critics. The Englishman made one changes to the side which won at Kobenhavn in midweek but that seemed to unbalance the team early on. Giorgas Seitaridis made his debut, deployed on the right of defence, looked particularly comfortable as Liverpool relied solely on Gerrard and Torres for any sort of attacking inspiration.
That played into the hands of Hull City, who tended to double up on both players, and the visitors were seldom troubled. Phil Brown's men showed little inclination to attack, however, allowing Liverpool to spend long periods camped in their half. It took 28 minutes for either side to muster an opportunity of any note, Xabi Alonso beating George Boateng and crossing for Torres to head straight at Myhill.
That was the only attempt on target in a dour first half. The home fans, who had come with high hopes on Kevin Keegan, were far from happy. To their relief, Liverpool played with greater urgency after the break and it was not long before they were rewarded. Carragher produced an excellent cross to the back post and Giorgas Seitardis who had went forward for a free kick rose above Joe Parkin to head past Myhill.
Robbie Keane was denied his first goal for the club when his acrobatic volley was well saved, before Parkin cleared his header off the line from Gerrard's corner. Hull were having difficulty coping with a rejuvenated Liverpool, and when Torres put Kuyt through with a neat header the Dutch striker made no mistake with a low finish to Myhill's right. On 73 minutes Daniel Agger appeared to block Geovanni's shot with an arm, only for referee Rob Styles to reject Hull City's protests.
Newly promoted Hull City this season, had another appeal turned down when Javier Mascherano's high foot connected with George Boateng's shoulder, while Marlon King poked over from close range. To rub salt in their wounds, Styles pointed to the spot after Xabi Alonso went down under Paul McShane's challenge two minutes from the end and Gerrard forced the ball home via Myhill's left hand.

"Today's game will be answer all my critics. I am really proud of my team that played so well in the second half. I would like to thank the fans who were constantly supporting the team after we had a poor first half. Fan support makes a lot of difference in a game of football and today we had that which helped us to win the first game of the season."
*Hull City manager Phil Brown
"We felt they were penalties. But I didn't feel we were going to get those decisions today. I don't want it to sound like sour grapes but on another day I think they might been given our way. How we are going to do this season will depend on our home form. Anything we got today would have been a big bonus. We all knew Premier League is tough but today we experienced it ourselves."
