I play Under 19s cricket here in the UAE alongside several large and angry Indian and Pakistani boys. It's pretty scary, as I'm the only white kid - and I'm only 15.

They're all huge and bowl like lightning, and for a specialist bowler it gets pretty uncomfortable batting in those nets.

Well anyway, one day I went from school to a mates house, got changed, and went to cricket later that day. My dad was supposed to meet me there with my kit, but of course when I rang him he said "just borrow some". "What about my ball guard?" I asked, "Oh no, come on, as if you really need that."

Well, not wanting to be a wuss, I had to go borrow someone else gear. There was no way in hell I was going to share someone else's nut guard, so I went without. I'd never been hit before, and it was my first time going without.

So anyway, I get in the net and completely forget about not having it, and I'm seeing it well, middling a few shots first up. Then of course, our 6 foot 4 in swinging fast bowler (the fastest in the team actually) runs in with his wild Makhaya Ntini action and....

Well, it hurt.

Haha, did you actually go to the emergency room?

Well, believe it or not, but i have never played with a nut guard yet. I tried it once but it only made me more uncomfortable. I have a motto, if you are going to miss a ball directed at your body then you deserve a crack at your nuts. Luckily i havent been hit even once, though hot and humid conditions here would have somthing to do with it as well. Coz bowlers struggle to get any swing from the ball

Yeah, well that motto isn't going to help you when you get jaffer that pitches on off and swings back in late.

Well, i cannot recall when was the last time tendulkar was hit on the nuts...:D:D So i might get lucky and get away without nut guard too:p:p

can people be so stupid? honestly? just wear one, they are not at all uncomfortable when fitted right, and they dont restrict movement. and they could save your life

Well it does hurt when you get hit in the nuts either way, whether it's a sack-wack or like in your case. I'd always wear my cup to club games, though it was the only game in which I left my cup at home that I got hit in the nuts. I ended up retiring and didn't play for that match.

It's is if when you know your not wearing your cup, that you get struck in the balls.

Guys, Conditions here are absolutely batting friendly. In Indian hot summer conditions, the new ball swings barely for 3 or 4 overs(Thats too only when bowler knows how too). I am a number 3 batsman and captain of my team. So i can come up at any position. Generally if a early wicket fall then i send someone else in otherwise i bat as usual. So when i come on to bat, the ball has literally no sideways movement. Thus i can easily whack the ball around. Thats the reason for my motto. How come you miss the ball on a batting paradise which should have been whacked over midwicket or guided towards fine leg?? If you do mis it, then you deserve to get hit.

P.S: I had started wearing the nut guard:D coz your posts made me nervous :(:noway... and you cannot play well when you are nervous

So basically. You're awful at playing the moving ball, so if an early wicket falls, instead of going out there and playing for your team and setting an example as captain, you cop out and send some other lad in to face the opening bowler swinging the ball. Quality captaincy that.

Hey, as captain you've got to do anything which keeps your average up ;)

Indian team also does that. Saving the best batsman for best part of the innings. If india had a good opening partnership then Yuvi comes at number 3, otherwise he always come after Raina,Sharma and sometimes Dhoni. No one criticizes Dhoni then?? I do what is best for my team. I am not saying that i am absolutely pathetic playing the moving ball, i am the best player of spin bowling in my team so i have to save myself for that period otherwise on Indian tracks, spinners can wreck havoc. FYI the pitches for College competitions are not best by any standard. Cracks from the over number one.

i went without one on my 1st day. i didnt feel any thing or any difference, because that was my 1st time playing with redball. before that played with tape tennis (duh!) so i never needed any cup, so i didnt feel any difference, uncomfortable. but i didnt get hit, phew! thank God.

but i got one after that, and i been using one since then. so if i go without one today, i would wet my pants

Maybe just the league you play in was crap, because the kids in my team are damn good at swing. Well, they CAN swing it, but have little control tbh. And thank you who said "what if you get a jaffer on middle swinging in", because thats exactly what i got hahah. Well it was a new ball, and it hadnt been used for 2-3 overs, it was the first ball used by that kid. It was in the nets too btw, I dont remember if I said that.

And yes, i did actually go to the emergency room haha. Needed to check if I hadn't done permanent damage.

Also, if you're the best player at spin in your club, and there are better players than you at facing swing, why bat at 3?

Actually my captain does the same thing to me. I'm an allrounder (but mostly quick bowler) who can bat at 8, cause I am capable of the occassional good innings. Whenever we lose 2 or 3 quick wickets in like the first over and a half, which happens WAY more often than it should, he sends me out because I don't get out easy. But on the other hand, I'm quite ████ at going for big shots hahah.
