Australian Team docks in Southampton

At around 10am this morning, the Australian Cricket team arrived in England after a typically long voyage from Melbourne. Dubbed 'the best test team in history' by Australian newspapers, and led by "The Don" Bradman, They will play 5 test matches against England, led by Yorkshireman Len Hutton.

Donald Bradman, Captain

The Australians squad, a very good set of players:

And their opponents, England:

Led by captain Len Hutton:

The First Test starts on 10th June.

The Met office has kindly predicted a 5 day forcast for us, however it's accuracy cannot be guarenteed (remember its 1948!)

"Welcome to ther BBC's coverage of the 1948 Ashes Series. A short while ago, the two teams were announced."

"No real surprises from either side, but Australia are definately the best side on paper. Now lets go out to the middle and join Don Bradman and Len Hutton for the toss."

*Australian skipper Bradman tosses the coin high in the air*

Len Hutton: "heads"

*the coin lands, heads up*

"Well, Len, you've won the toss, what are you going to do?"

Hutton: "Well, lad, ah think thee knows we're going t'have a bat. 'Tis a decent pitch, and 'tis good t'get some runs on t'board early."

"Don, you've lost the toss and been put in, are you disappointed?"

Bradman: "Not really, no. It's how you play, not who wins the toss, that determins who will win the match."

superb idea, very unoriginal. You deserve a lot of credit for this. Good luck.

England get off to a slow start (7 runs off 7 overs  ), and the first chance of the game emerges as Washbrook is struck on the pad...

But no, the Umpire's finger stays down. Maybe its hitting him just outside the off stump?

England start to accelerate...

...and reach 71-0 at Lunch, with Washbrook 36* and Hutton 35*.

England's batsman look happy as they leave the field for lunch to loud applause, and Australia's superb pace attack are left wicketless and discontented.
