There have been several nations making their cricketing debuts at the Olympics ever since the first tournament in 1896. Most of them start off cautiously as a rule giving an undue amount of respect to the opposition bowlers and if they are lucky perhaps win a match or two before eventually fizzing out like Belgium and Uruguay. Not Pakistan however; the first ball they ever received in the Olympics was bludgeoned to the boundary with such force by Imtiaz Ahmed that it stupefied even the bowler and a massive six followed in the same over. They were here and they meant business, as was demonstrated by Nazar Mohammad who became their first half-centurion and skipper Mian Mohammad Saeed the second. Ceylon's glorified pace attack consisting of ball shiners were treated with disdain and only their talented spin attack were able to help bring things under control by making inroads into Pakistan's middle-order, to give the islanders a some sense of relief. They still managed to bring up almost 250, finishing on 245/8 courtesy of Fazal Mahmood's late-order cameo of 33 off just 23 balls.

Despite not being among among cricket's elite 'Test' nations, Ceylon arguably possess one of the most dynamic middle-orders in the competition that on a good day can score runs against any bowling attack in the world. The key therein lies in getting their two most vital cogs in Derrick de Saram and Mahadevan Sathasivam for not too many, which is what Pakistan managed to do successfully thanks to Khan Mohammad and Munawwar Ali Khan. Fazal Mahmood though was by far their best bowler claiming 4 for 33 off his 10 overs to make a very memorable all-round performance on Olympic debut, and his figures could have yet been better had Malcolm Spittel not smacked him for consecutive sixes in the 32nd over before the former eventually had the last laugh. Nevertheless, Ceylon were still not out of the game whilst impressive newcomer Ievers Gunasekara was out there scoring an impressive counter-attacking 53 off 74 balls. Only his run out by former India player M Jahangir Khan finally sealed the deal for Pakistan, who became the 11th nation to bring up victory on Olympic debut by a 42-run margin - no mean feat for a nation that didn't even exist until the previous year.
