New Zealand humble South Africa
The making of a world class all rounder?
New Zealand had the best of the fortune thanks to some enterprising changes in the team composition. John Wright sustained a knee injury and Greatbatch was brought in to replace John Wright. Chris Cairns was promoted in the batting order and was asked to bat at no.3. Gavin Larsen was dropped and Dany Morrison was brought in to replace him. Greathbatch set the tone for New Zealand batting with an swashbuckling 50, Chris Cairns celebrated his promotion with a classy 100 and Morrison returned the bowling figures of 3 for 26 off 7 overs.
It is rather very clear the comeback of South Africa to international cricket is being greeted with a grin by the other cricketing countries in this world cup. South Africa have absolutely looked out of depth and are struggling to even bat out their 50 overs in this World cup. New Zealand having lost their opening two encounters against Australia and even to Sri Lanka was able to humble South Africa in a very single sided game.
Thanks to some smart thinking by Martin Crowe and the team management the cricketing world was made to sit up and notice the young junior Cairns after being promoted to no.3 slammed the South African bowlers all over the park to announce his arrival as one of the world's leading all rounders.
Much kudos should go to Greatbatch for having come out and straight away blasting South African bowlers to score a quick fire 50. Greatbatch was walking across the stumps and clearing the mid on and the mid wicket slogging the South African faster bowlers. Cairns batted with patience until he found the timing come naturally. Once Greatbatch departed Cairns tore into South African bowling with shots all around the wicket. He was severe on anything short of good length and played the South African spinners with disdain.
New Zealand ended up with a momooth 314 runs the first team to score over 300 runs in this world cup. South Africa simply could not afford any fight and towards the end though McMillan tried to spur the run rate it was a bit too late. Hansie Cronje scored a slow 50 but that hardly helped South African run rate and currently they are placed at the bottom of the table even below Zimbabwe. South Africa has the potential to make a mark in this world cup but are possibly finding it hard coming over from hot South African summer to altogether different conditions of New Zealand.
Chris Cairns turned up a brilliant opening spell and got couple of wickets to yet again show he is as good with the ball he is with the bat. The tournament will now get all the more interesting with New Zealand also showing their best form and not too late either.
The latest points table after this game is as follows, there are four clear leaders with Australia at the top and there are two teams England and India contending for the top spot if they win their next game. Three teams in the bottom of the table New Zealand, Zimbabwe and South Africa now pretty much have to win all that comes their way to harbour thoughts of making it to the finals.
The next couple of games are very crucial for the out come of the top spots for the rest of the tourney. The next four games are :
Australia v/s India at Brisbane (If India can upset the hosts then there may be a chance the table will change drastically)
Pakistan v/s England (Yet again a crucial game for England if they beat Pakistan then again the table will be altered dramatically and if Pakistan wins they might just end up being at the top of the table. A win for England and India will leave England, India, Australia, Pakistan, Srilanka and West Indies at the same number of points. Run rate will then decide the top 4 teams.)
South African v/s Sri Lanka (South Africa if does win then Sri Lanka will be pushed down a little and South Africa may make a come back. Sri Lanka if does win will probably end up being the top 3 in the table.)
