West Indies thrash Zimbabwe

There was absolutely no reprive for Zimbabwe with West Indies playing 4 fast bowlers on a green pitch. West Indies rested Marshall, Haynes and Harper for this game. The tear away fast bowler Patrick Patterson, the young all rounder Simmons and another express bowler Cummins were brought in place of the rested players. Nothing dramatic or suprise result came out of the match with West Indies turning up a clinical performance to over haul a paltry target of 128 runs in 30 overs. The failure of the top order against the Zimbabwe though probably came because of complacent attitude shown in the field by the Windies. The top order played few reckless shots including the young sensation Brian Lara. Thanks to the proved and tested batting by West Indies captain Richardson in the company of Willams and Logie West Indies got to the target without much concern.

Zimbabwe have had absolutely no chance whatsoever so far in this tournament and doesn't look like it is going to change either given the dismal batting performance by the top order. Apart from Pycroft not one top order batsman was able to show any form with the bat and also having to play the Windies pacemen on a pitch like this is not going to help them improve their game either.

The curators have been asked to shave off the grass for the upcoming game between India and Australia.

New Zealand humble South Africa

chriswithvizor.jpg
The making of a world class all rounder?

New Zealand had the best of the fortune thanks to some enterprising changes in the team composition. John Wright sustained a knee injury and Greatbatch was brought in to replace John Wright. Chris Cairns was promoted in the batting order and was asked to bat at no.3. Gavin Larsen was dropped and Dany Morrison was brought in to replace him. Greathbatch set the tone for New Zealand batting with an swashbuckling 50, Chris Cairns celebrated his promotion with a classy 100 and Morrison returned the bowling figures of 3 for 26 off 7 overs.

It is rather very clear the comeback of South Africa to international cricket is being greeted with a grin by the other cricketing countries in this world cup. South Africa have absolutely looked out of depth and are struggling to even bat out their 50 overs in this World cup. New Zealand having lost their opening two encounters against Australia and even to Sri Lanka was able to humble South Africa in a very single sided game.

Thanks to some smart thinking by Martin Crowe and the team management the cricketing world was made to sit up and notice the young junior Cairns after being promoted to no.3 slammed the South African bowlers all over the park to announce his arrival as one of the world's leading all rounders.

Much kudos should go to Greatbatch for having come out and straight away blasting South African bowlers to score a quick fire 50. Greatbatch was walking across the stumps and clearing the mid on and the mid wicket slogging the South African faster bowlers. Cairns batted with patience until he found the timing come naturally. Once Greatbatch departed Cairns tore into South African bowling with shots all around the wicket. He was severe on anything short of good length and played the South African spinners with disdain.

New Zealand ended up with a momooth 314 runs the first team to score over 300 runs in this world cup. South Africa simply could not afford any fight and towards the end though McMillan tried to spur the run rate it was a bit too late. Hansie Cronje scored a slow 50 but that hardly helped South African run rate and currently they are placed at the bottom of the table even below Zimbabwe. South Africa has the potential to make a mark in this world cup but are possibly finding it hard coming over from hot South African summer to altogether different conditions of New Zealand.

Chris Cairns turned up a brilliant opening spell and got couple of wickets to yet again show he is as good with the ball he is with the bat. The tournament will now get all the more interesting with New Zealand also showing their best form and not too late either.

The latest points table after this game is as follows, there are four clear leaders with Australia at the top and there are two teams England and India contending for the top spot if they win their next game. Three teams in the bottom of the table New Zealand, Zimbabwe and South Africa now pretty much have to win all that comes their way to harbour thoughts of making it to the finals.

The next couple of games are very crucial for the out come of the top spots for the rest of the tourney. The next four games are :

Australia v/s India at Brisbane (If India can upset the hosts then there may be a chance the table will change drastically)

Pakistan v/s England (Yet again a crucial game for England if they beat Pakistan then again the table will be altered dramatically and if Pakistan wins they might just end up being at the top of the table. A win for England and India will leave England, India, Australia, Pakistan, Srilanka and West Indies at the same number of points. Run rate will then decide the top 4 teams.)

South African v/s Sri Lanka (South Africa if does win then Sri Lanka will be pushed down a little and South Africa may make a come back. Sri Lanka if does win will probably end up being the top 3 in the table.)

India v/s Australia : A Preview

Tendulkar : Making of an opener?

While Indian followers will have thumping heart the Australian followers will be cooling heals knowing the capability of the Australian team and the way they have played so far in the tournament. India may take much solace with the bowling form of their speedsters Kapil Dev, Manoj Prabhakar and Srinath. India will be slightly worried with the form of middle order. Manjraker, Kambli, Amre and Jadeja all possess good batting talent but the form has been inconsistent so far. Srikant, Tendulkar and Azharuddin have shown grit so far and produced excellent innings in the tournament. The all rounders Kapil Dev, Manoj Prabhakar and Ravi Shastri haven't shown much form with the bat so far. India will need all of their players to play to their potential if they are to win the upcoming game against Australia. Potential is certainly there as well as the nucleus but coming up against Australia on a hard track on Brisbane will make it that much more harder for the out of form players to look forward to an easy outing. Talks are that Tendulkar will be opening the batting while Ravi Shastri will be brought in the place of left arm spinner Raju. Sanjay Manjraker may also replace Vinod Kambli is what the spokesman for the Indian team said.

Although it may sound a bit tongue in cheek but Australians are approaching this game with few changes to their batting order themselves to experiment at this stage of the world cup than later. Allan Border mentioned to the press Australia will be playing the Waugh twins high up the order while Moody and Border will go down the order. There is also a talk the younger twin will even be opening the batting while Marsh will bat slightly down the order. Australian bowlers are in their best form and will look forward to press home the advantage. There is also a chance Merv Hughes will be brought in place of Peter Taylor as the Indians are more suspect against the pace and bounce than spin.

Waugh twins dominate pre match reporting

The batting make up of Australia in the top 7 is probably the best in the tournament. All the batters are in excellent form with useful runs behind them in the last couple of games. That said India have proved to be a bogey team for Australia in the past and Australia will be very conscious of that. Australia start as favorites with pretty much everyone in their team in excellent form and only a collective effort from India can upset the dominating hosts.

Ravi Shastri and Kapil Dev put in a gritty performance

A gritty lower middle order batting and a stingy bowling effort by Ravi Shastri, Kapil Dev, Manoj Prabhakar and Sachin Tendulkar achieved the improbable victory for India at Brisbane.

Australia won the toss and decided to bat rightly so. The pitch was hard, flat and looked an absolute beauty for batting. Australia started in a very dominating fashion with the young M.Waugh and veteran David Boon flaying both Kapil Dev and Srinath all over the park. Kapil Dev struck back to remove the dangerous looking David Boon and then the brakes were applied. While M.Waugh batted with ease Dean Jones and Steve Waugh hardly troubled the scorers. Dean Jones scratched around for about 22 balls without rotating the strike much and then got out. S.Waugh was bowled first ball by the Indian left arm spinner Ravi Shastri for a duck. Tendulkar removed the younger Waugh who was looking in excellent form. Marsh, Border, Moody and Healy all contributed to take Australia over the 200 mark but it was always 30-40 runs short on a pitch good for batting as this. Australia were far too disappointing with the way they started and they were by the end of 25 overs at 3 for 123. Only realising about 90 runs in the next 25 overs was a hapless effort (Autoplayed after 25 overs till the end of Australian inning).

The young Indian sensation Sachin Tendulkar proved to the world his arrival as an opening batsman with a sublime 38 off only 42 balls. Tendulkar drove, cut, pulled and nudged for singles to frustrate the Australians. At the other end the other Indian top order batters were all found short against the pace and guile of Bruce Reid and McDermott. India were reeling 4 for 42 at one stage only with Tendulkar being between victory and loss. Tom Moody bowled an excellent yorker to remove Tendulkar leaving India at 5 for 61 and it looked as it the target was far too much for the Indian batters. What followed next was a fairy tale ending for India with all the late middle order players striking excellent form.

Amre and Kapil Dev put together a crucial 77 runs partnership for the 6th wicket. Just when victory looked possible for India at 6 for 138 India lost Kapil Dev to a brainless run out to leave India again staring at defeat.

What followed next was a miracle for India as both Ravi Shastri (47*) and Manoj Prabhakar(27*) put together an unbeaten partnership of 67 runs for the 8th wicket to take India home with 3 wickets and 7 overs to spare. Not only did this victory helped India to keep afloat in this tournament but also helped their net run rate having knocked off the target in quick time despite setbacks. India will now feel a lot confident with their all rounders, bowlers and batters all showing form when it was much needed.

Latest points table :

P.S : India win courtesy of the AUTOPLAY thanks to the team selection to drop Raju and bring back Ravi Shastri for this game. Also to have batted Tendulkar up the order. Austrlia looked to score over 250 easily by the end of the 25th over but the AUTOPLAY only added another 90 runs for the second half of the inning. India were lucky to get away with the victory as they were 122 for 6 by the end of 25 overs. When AUTOPLAYED CPU added over 90 runs in less than 18 overs with only a loss of couple of wickets. To certain extent luck and team selection favored India in this game.

The next game is between England and Pakistan at Adelaide Oval. The original game was an embarassment for the 1992 cup holder Pakistan. They were rolled over for just 74 runs off 40 overs  . That score was the lowest ever recorded by Pakistan in any world cup. England looked to coast to victory before rain stopped play. Fortunately for Pakistan those days an abandoned game was not getting into record books. The following is the summary of the scores before the game was abandoned.

[01 Mar, Adelaide]
Pak vs. Eng match abandoned
Pak 74ao in 40.2 (Pringle 8/3, Botham 12/2)
set @ 63 in 16
Eng 24/1 in 9

I will be playing for Pakistan this game as they looked like the losers in that original game.

OMG Pringle actually took 8 wickets for 3 runs!!!

Or is it 3 wickets and 8 runs? lol

good win for India (I still remember the horrible 1/2 run defeat in the real match)..good screens too

Good win for India, as they now have eight points.

Looking forward to Pak v Eng game now. Stupid rule denied England a win, well lets hope they do it here!!
