After reading the recent Match Preview, us here at Nosyparker News found the fact a little strange that the Lions had lost only 1 of their 6 encounters against the Armadillos, strange because of the reason provided:
"...when batsman Mike Greenwood was made to bowl."
This intrigued us, so we decided to dig a little deeper, and what we found makes for a nice little tale...
The Day of the Drunk Skipper
The day was 20th January 2005, pretty much exactly a whole year ago. It was a cold but sunny day. Both the teams had arrived at The Lion Stands, the place where the match was to be played. The pitch was relatively unfamiliar to both teams, dry weather and the extreme cold making it rather cracked up and uneven as a result.
At the toss, Armadillo skipper Allanson walked out to the middle. But Artur was no-where to be seen. Stand in skipper Ryan Crouch walked out instead, called incorrectly, and the Lions were fielding first.
Just as the team were about to take the field, with Mike Leonard as the subsitute fieldsman, guess who decided to stumble in but Arthur Dennis. He looked a little off-color, but claimed he was fine. His speech was slurred to.
But I ignored that and sent him onto the field with today's team list. Since he had mist the meeting, I had written this for him, to inform him of the new bowling pattern we were trying today and to also make him aware that Ryan Crouch had been promoted up the batting order and would be bowling fifth as a result.
Everything started dandy. Dennis looked a little sleepy and stumbled about everywhere, misfielded a few, but otherwise everything was fine. That is, until it came Ryan's turn to bowl.
It was the 20th over, and by then I had realised that I had sent in our skipper on the field drunk. I was praying for nothing to go wrong, and till then nothing really did. But, when he tossed the ball to Greenwood, I knew something was wrong. Greenwood tossed it over to Ryan, but then Dennis got mad. He stumbled his way over to Billy, and gave him a good yelling. Ryan, Ny, Delop and the keeper Anton all walked over. Dennis yelled at everyone, and pulled out his bowling sheet and waived it about like a madman.
With his blurred vision, he saw the bowling marker I placed on Ryan against Billy's name instead. And he was relentless. I was helpless - subs aren't allowed in BT mid-way through a match, and manager can't walk onto the pitch. So, as it turned out, Billy bowled. Left arm quick with no accuracy. He got pasted for 83 runs, and they managed 311/3. Crouch not even bowling one over.
When they walked back, and dunked Arthur into an ice bath, gave him an asprin, and he was fit to go. Turned out he had a drinking competition on the way here with his mates. Bad idea. After he apologised profusley to everyone, I told him he didn't need to bat if he didn't want to. He did, and he clubbed a 50 ball 69. But apart from him and Cox, who made 84, no one got any good scores. The total was too large, Crouch's promotin failed with him making only 22, and we were bowled out for 253 in 46.3 overs. But Arthur learned his lesson, and every game against the Armadillos is a big one for him. It shows, we've won the next 5 games against them. And it also was a good learning curve for the younger members, never drink on the eve of a big match!
