Adelaide Crows 2008 - 2009 Season Begins

Not a good start to the season. If you don't string a few wins together soon your finals hopes could be gone.

Crows nearly knock off Eagles at Home

The Crows nearly came off with a upset victory against the Eagles at Subiaco this afternoon. Almost 24,000 fans watched the Crows come from behind to nearly snatch the victory against the home club.

Down by 7 goals at half time, the Crows couldn't even score a goal in the first half. It took 4 minutes into the 3rd term when Brett Burton kicked the Crows first goal. He then scored just 4 minutes later to start the Crow comeback. In the end the just fell short by 2 poiints, but the Crow coach was happy with the effort.
"Sure i am dissapointed that we didn't run over the top of them and take the win, it would have been nice, but i am proud of the guys, they fought their way back into the game, after being 7-8 goals down at Half time, usually they'd give up, but i asked for a little bit more from them today and they did me proud. Considering we didn't have one of our best players out on the ground, Brad Symes who got injured in the first couple of minutes of the game, we did extremly well to loose the game by just 2 points. Goody and Burton held us in the game, while stiffy was superb down in defence.

Hopefully that gives us a little more momentum going into next week where we will go in with more confidence in our playing group. I haven't had time to address Symes's injury yet, so i hopefully will get better info on that later in the week, or tonight sometime.

Crow out for 6 weeks

New Adelaide recruit, Brad Symes will miss the next 6 weeks with a shoulder problem. Symes 23, will have surgery on his shoulder during the week, to try and get him right before the end of the season. Symes who is leading the way for the Crows in disposals so far this year, will have to sit on the sidelines for the next 6 weeks and watch his team.
Symes suffered the injury in a tackle on Saturday afternoon against the West Coast Eagles at Subiaco.
Brad Symes was having his best season of his career since crossing from Port at the end of last year, as he wanted better oppourtunity as a player, and now he has found himself being a huge part in the Crow midfield.
Symes was leading the way for the Crows in the handballs (155), 3rd in disposals (196), 1st in frees for (16) and 3rd in clearences.

Crows back on the winners list

Adelaide are back on the winners list after their 26 point victory against the Bombers on Friday night. The Crows led by their youngsters in Bernie Vince, Jason Porplyzia, Nathan VanBerlo and Nathan Bock, ended their 5 game loosing streak.
The Crows started well out of the blocks kicking 6 goals in the first quarter.

Led by Brett Burton who finished with 4 goals the Crows had 10 different goal kickers for the match, as they posted a score of 17.10.112, one of the highest scores they have produced this year. Burton -4, Vince -3, VanBerlo -2 and Porplyzia -2 were all the multiple goal scorers for the Crows, as Leading Goal kicker, Scott Stevens only managed the 1 goal, as he is playing a more of a defensive role.
Coach Sumner said that Brett Burton has found some form over the last few weeks kicking bags of goals, and it is good for us, now people won't just respect Stevo, now they will have a lot more respect for our other players in the Forward Line. As it shows, like today, we have many multiple ways of kicking goals, and if it isn't Stevens or Burton, our midfield can bob up like Vince, Knights or VanBerlo. Jason Porplyzia is coming back into some form aswell.

Seasons Half way point

So we have hit round 10 of the Toyota AFL Premiership season and we are going to cap off what has been a remarkable 2008 Season so far.
We are going to look back on the Adelaide Crows first half of the season.

Well it started off pretty well when you think about it, but the last few weeks have been a down pour. The Crows are sitting 13th on the AFL Ladder after 10 rounds with 3 wins and 7 losses. Here is what has happened for the Crows during the season.
Round 1, Crows lost to the Bulldogs by 32 points.
Round 2, Crows defeated the Eagles by a point
Round 3, Crows defeated the Power by 29 points
Round 4, Crows lost to the Hawks by 54 points
Round 5, Crows lost to the Dockers by 10 points.
Round 6, Crows lost to the Blues by 101 points.
Round 7, Crows lost to the Kangaroos by 42 points
Round 8 Crows lost to the Demons by 33 points
Round 9, Crows lost to the Eagles by 2 points
Round 10, Crows defeated the Bombers by 46 points
So after 6 straight losses, the Crows finally made a break through and beat the Bombers last week at home.

We had a chat to the Adelaide Coach Hayden Sumner, and this is what he had to say.

"I have been impressed with a few things this year. Firstly the development of our younger players. Players like Chris Knights, Brad Symes, Bernie Vince and Nathan VanBerlo have been named in our bests week in week out, they are just getting better and better by the week. That is certainly a good thing for the clubs future.
Scott Stevens has been the impressive one though. From what i remember, he was played down back for most of the time he has been at Adelaide under Neil Craig. Even at Sydney, he was tried down back a lot of the time, being a 3rd tier tall backmen, he had a little stint in the Forward line i remember in a few games with the Swans, but i had a little vision that he could become a key marking forward for us this year, he has certainly provided that for us, for the beginning of this season. In the 10 games we'ved played his kicked 21 goals, and is leading our Goal kicking at the moment. He is also leading us in Marks. He has had a good season so far, so let's hope he can continue his good form.

Brad Symes has been a good pickup for us as well at the beginning of the year. He said that he wanted to get more oppourtunity as a player, so we gave him that chance this year, and boy has he shown us what he can do. Would be leading our Best and Fairest i rekon if he didn't do his shoulder. That is a massive downfall for him, doing that to his shoulder after such a great start to the season. He was one of our better midfielders and is one of them younger players i have been talking about. He is only 23, so he has a big future ahead of him, if he plays like he did at the beginning of the year before he did his shoulder.

Tigers knock off the Crows

Richmond have given the Crows their 8th loss for the Season, in round 11 at the MCG.
The Tigers defeated the Crows by 31 points infront of 25 thousand fans. The Tigers led by superstar Matthew Richardson who kicked 4 goals, with his fellow forward Kayne Pettifer single handedly knock off the Crows side.
8 goals between Richardson and Pettifer was enough as the Tigers kicked 14.19.103 to defeat the Crows.

Not much glamour for the Crows this afternoon. Except the 4 goal haul from Brett Burton who has now taken the lead in the Crows Goal kicking ahead of Scott Stevens who only managed 1 for the Crows against the Tigs. Chris Knights and Bernie Vince we're good for the Crows with Knights having 23 touches, and Vince touching the footy 20 times.

Crow coach Hayden said he was very dissapointed with the result, and has now confirmed that the Crows aren't in the finals race. "It is too difficult for us to make the finals now, so we'll just play out the rest of the year and see what comes from it. We'll still be out to win every single match that we can win, but for now, the Finals series is out of the question.
Trent Hentschel injured himself during the match, but the doctor says he'll be right after next week".

Key Players for Adelaide

Watch out for Jason Porplyzia this week. The 23 year old has been coming into some good form over the last few weeks, and this week he'll get under the Hawks guard. He will mainly start in the forward line, but will move his way into the midfield, and i expect Brent Guerra to be the player to pick up Porplyzia. If Porpz is giving Guerra a good run, then Campbell Brown arguably the Hawks best player, may be shifted onto him to try and shut him down.

A bag of 7 gives Crows the Edge

A massive bag of goals from small forward Jason Porplyzia has given the Crows the win against one of the Flag favourites in Hawthorn. Jason Porplyzia kicked 7 goals for the Crows as they booted away to a 44 point victory at home in front of 24,612 fans. It was a great team effort by the Crows, but nothing was more spectatular then the 7 goal haul from Porplyzia.

The Crows kicked away in the first term kicking 7 goals to 3, and then again in the 3rd term, when the game was up for grabs, the Crows kicked away again. This time it was their older generation of players that got them over the line. The Crows kicked 8 goals to 3 in the 3rd term, to set themselves up for the victory.
The talked about Lance Franklin was held quiet by Nathan Bock, as Franklin only managed the 1 goal and only touched the footy 15 times.

But all eyes were on the Crows, as Porplyzia kicked 7 goals, and Scott Stevens got back on the goal kicking list when he slotted home 3 majors from Centre Half Forward. All multiples went to McLeod 2, Thompson 2, Goodwin, Reilly and Burton who all kicked 2 goals.

Crows coach Hayden was very pleased with the result. I'm certainly pleased with the result. I had a little chat with Porps before the game and kind of gave him the old rev up, and by gee did he do exactly what i said. He gave me everything that i asked him to do. I am very happy with his work.
I am also very pleased with the playing group, the week that i announced that our finals hopes are over, they come and beat one of the Premiership favourites, that's a little strange don't you think, but it just shows what can happen, when ya team really performs. And too have that many goal kickers, and with them kicking more then 1 goal each, it's a bonus.

Brisbane win at home

Brisbane have recorded and 42 point win against the Crows in their round 13 clash at the Gabba this afternoon.
The Lions bought up their 8th win of the season by defeating the Crows who now have lost game number 9. The Lions led by Daniel Bradshaw who kicked 5 goals and small forward, Anthony Corrie who slotted home 4 goals, were very good up at home, and are now certainly shaping up to be one of the contenders for the flag.

The Crows on the other hand weren't too bad in the game, they fought hard, but their inaccuracy cost them the match. With Knights, Shirley and Burton all kicking behinds, it wasn't the Crows day infront of goal. Burton however did kick 2 goals along with his Captain Simon Goodwin and defender, Michael Doughty chipped up forward with 2 majors. Star Jason Porplyzia could only manage the 1 goal to back up his 7 goal haul last week.
The Crows would be very happy with Nathan Bocks game on Jonathan Brown, as Brown kicked 2 goals, but it seemed Bock had the better of Brown, as Bock finished the game with, 35 touches from the Full Back line, and was the leading disposal winner on the ground with Michael Rishitelli being the 2nd with 28 for the Lions.
Kris Massie played a good hand in defence picking up 27 touches.

The Crows will be looking to come back next week against the top side in Geelong next week at Aami Stadium, and try and be the first team to knock off the cats, who knows, they knocked over the Hawks, who says the won't do it again?
