Crows give Cats a bit of a run

League leaders Geelong have just nudge out the gallant Crows in today's round 14 clash at Aami Stadium. Geelong who have now won 14 matches on the trot, we're nearly over run by the hard finishing Crows, but they just got over the line. 19 points was the margin in the end of the day, but it was a very gallant display from the home team.

Matthew Stokes was probably the difference between the two sides, and he got under the Crows radar and kicked 4 goals. The Crows were mainly worried about one Gary Ablett and Jimmy Bartel, but didn't give enough attentin to the likes of Stokes and Byrnes.
Ablett however did still somehow get through the Crow barrier and ended up kicking 2 goals while being the best on ground for the Cats.
Backmen Matthew Egan was thrown up forward by coach Mark Thompson, and he got under the guard aswell, providing some hand, by kicking 3 goals.

For the Crows, it was a gallant display, but their bigger goal kicking names like Burton and Stevens weren't in the fray at all. Burton only managed to kick the 1 goal, as did Jason Porplyzia. Stevens played more in defence this week, as it was Michael Doughty who kicked 3 goals, after his 2 goals last week. Doughty has mainly played this year in defence, but playing him up forward for the last few weeks have given us a lot of bite in the forward line.
Andy McLeod was good, and kicked 2 goals while coming back to some good form.

Crows coach Hayden said he was very pleased with the win.
"Coming up against the best team in the competition, and who haven't been defeated so far in season 2008, and only loosing by 19 points when your nearing the bottom of the table is always a pretty good sign. I am very happy with our boys this afternoon.

There was a massive half time brawl between the two sides. It last for about 10 minutes, when all players got into a bit of a malee. 8 players got reported in the brawl, and many more will get fined for the brawl. It was a good way to finish the half time break, as the Crows tried to rough up the top team.

Lowest score in history

The Adelaide Crows have made the lowest score in AFL history yesterday when they only kicked the 1 goal for the match. The Crows kicked 1.11.17 to be smashed by the Pies by 104 points.
Jason Porplyzia was the only Crow player to kick the ball through the big sticks. It was a massive dissapointment for the Crows and their fans, but the match is over, and now they are going into next week.

The Pies denied the ball from the Crows, Travis Cloke kicked 3 goals, while up and coming youngster, Scott Pendlebury kicked 3 goals and had a massive 35 touches.
Michael Doughty for the Crows was one of the best on grounds, as he had 36 touches for the Crows. Brad Symes first game in the last 6 weeks after coming back from injury, and he was back to his best, as he picked up 29 disposals.

Crows come clean in Showdown

The Crows have beaten the Power in Showdown number 23 at Aami Stadium by 52 points infront of a crowd of 39, 325.
The Crows who last week, could only manage the 1 goal for the whole match, showed that they were only off last week, as they kicked 16.11.107 this week.
"We dominated the match. We had more of the ball, and we had better avenues to goal, said the Adelaide coach Sumner". We had 11 different goal kickers, and with our main goal kicker out of the side, being Brett Burton, it was looking tough to see where our goals were going to come from. Certainly we were relieing on Stevens and Porplyzia a hell of a lot, but the only kicked 2 goals between them.

Andy McLeod was back to his brilliant best, as he slotted into the Forward line and crumbed everything that came to the ground. Maybe in his last year of footy, McLeod kicked 3 goals against the Power and was one of the Crows best. Luke Jericho, in just his 3rd game of the season kicked 2 goals, while Michael Doughty kept his goal kicking tally going each week, with another 2 goals this week. Thompson also chipped in with 2.

Daynle Pearce and Warren Tredrea were the only multiple goal scorers for the Power as they had a miserable day. The Crows now have won the last 5 showdowns between the two sides, and now have the bragging rights between the two teams in the state of South Australia.

Swans fight off fast finishing Crows.

A 6 goal last quarter from the Adelaide Crows was nearly enough to snatch them the win against the Swans at the SCG. A miserable day in Sydney only saw just over 15,000 turn up the SCG to witness one of the better games of the year. Even though it was pooring down rain, and a current temp of 14 degrees, the game was played in good spirits. And with the away team 6 goals at half time, the crowd started to die down a little bit more, but there was a big urge comeback from the Crows but they just fell short in the end.

4 goals in a row to the Crows in the last quarter before Darren Jolly kicked a goal with 5 minutes to go, put the Crows out of reach, another 2 goals after that nearly saw them snatch victory but fell 7 points short.
The ruckmen Rhett Biglands started the comeback for the Crows just 2 minutes into the last quarter when Brad Symes kicked another 5 mins in. Jason Porplyzia kicked his 3rd while Trent Hentschel slotted one home with just over 13 minutes remaining. Porplyzia then kicked his 4th with 3 minutes to go, before Michael Doughty kicked a goal with a minute on the clock. The Swans kept the ball low key for the next minute until the siren blew.

It was a close game, and with some high scorers for both teams, as Barry Hall was the Swans best kicking 5 goals, while Jason Porplyzia was back into goal kicking form for the Crows as he kicked 4 goals. Crows ruckmen Rhett Biglands is starting to find some unseen form for the big fella, and he kicked 2 goals while having 17 possesions and 20 hitouts. It was a very good display from the 29 year old.
Ex Crow Martin Mattner had a day out against his old club, which saw him become a Swan, which was the same deal that saw Symes become a Crow. Mattner finished with 34 touches for the afternoon.

Adelaide midfielder Chris Knights injured himself in the match and will miss a week at the most with a corked thigh.

Crows win as they celebrate champions 300th

32,682 fans came to Aami Stadium to see one of the heros, Andrew McLeod play his 300th official AFL Match. And the Crows didn't let down McLeod or the fans. A massive win against the Blues was the perfect send off for the Indigineous champion.

68 points was the end result, where the 300 gamer was sensational. McLeod finished the match with 22 touches and kicking 4 goals he was inspirational for his team mates. Brett Burton was a good hand in the Crows wining after coming back from suspension, kicking 7 goals, while Jason Porplyzia slotted home 3 goals for the home side.
But all eyes were on the excitment machine Andy McLeod. Who says when you get older, you start to slow down a bit? McLeod showed some glimpses today, of his early years when he won back to back Norm Smith Medals for Adelaide in their premiership years (97,98).
Asked if he was considering retiering at the end of the season, McLeod said this... "Well im not to sure yet, it's something i'll have to come across towards the end of the year. It will be difficult to give up the game i have been playing all my life, and loving the game so much will be so much harder, but if i do hang up the boots i know i have gone out in the best way possible. I've played over 300 games, when my number 1 goal was to play one AFL match and i would of been happy. But playing 300 is a bonus. I've got 2 premiership medallions, and Norm Smiths, i've got a Michael Tuck medal for being judged best afield in the Wizard Cup Grand Final in 2003, i've won Best and Fairests, and been represented in the All-Australian team on a number of accasions. So i've done nearly everything that is possible, so why not retire? I will just see how the body is at the end of the year, and then get my mind around some other things before i decide.

Good form hitting at the wrong time

The Adelaide Crows have started winning some matches, their recent win was against the Tigers at Aami Stadium yesterday, but have the Crows left their run too late? Only 3 weeks remaining in the regular AFL Season, and the Crows are 2 games away from making the 8, have they left their run too late? Or will they be able to sneak into the finals.

Simon Goodwin and Brett Burton helped the Crows into their 31 point victory over the Tigers at Aami Stadium. With both Goodwin and Burton kicking 4 goals each for the home side, to nearly kick the teams total score, well they kicked half of it atleast. Small Forward, Jason Porplyzia was also in the goal kicking form he found a couple of week ago, when he slotted home his 3rd in the last quarter, and big Trent Hentschel was finding a little bit of form after missing the past 2 seasons with a knee injury, when he kicked 2 goals.
Matthew Richardson was the alone figure in the Tigers forward line, kicking 5 goals for the away team, and was the only Richmond player to kick double figures. Even his buddy Nathan Brown couldn't find the big sticks.

However Brown did get a lot of the ball for the Tigers as he picked up 22 touches. 301st gamer Andy McLeod was still in form, as he had another 23 disposal game and is looking more and more fit and healthy. Bernie Vince was one of the best for the Crows this afternoon as the 20 year old picked up 31 touches off the wing.
Then the regulars, Nathan Bock, Captain Simon Goodwin and McLeod finished up the top 5 disposals getters for the Crows.

Crows keep on winning

Adelaide have come out of the blue to win another match right before the end of the Season. The Crows are now just 1 game away from the top 8, and their finals chances are looking more and more real. A 18 point victory aganist the Bombers at the Telstra Dome saw Brett Burton kick 5 goals to get the away team over the line.
32 and a half thousand fans packed the Dome to see this round 20 clash, but the home faithful didn't see the result they wanted to.

With the birdman kicking 5 goals, and with their Captain Simon Goodwin and Trent Hentschel kicking 2 goals for the afternoon it was enough to get them over the line. Brad Symes had a career high 43 touches, and 27 of them were handballs.
Full Back Ben Rutten kept the Bombers captain, Matthew Lloyd quiet. Lloyd didn't feature in the goal kicking for the Dons, whilst his opponent Rutten had 32 touches from the back line. It was a great display from the 192cm backmen.

Alwyn Davey was the Bombers best player when he slotted home 3 goals. Davey also picked up 23 touches aswell, being one of the Bombers best. Jay Nash was probably their better players being the Dons top disposal getter getting 28 touches.
Veteran Dustin Fletcher was another good player for the Bombers as he picked up 22 possesions after playing on Burton.

Adelaide win 2 in a row in Melbourne

Adelaide are just one game and percentage outside of the top 8, as they only need to win the last game of the season by a bit of a margin. It is certainly do able for the Crows, but they will need to play at their best next week.
The Crows who over came the Saints at the Dome yesterday, are now giving themselves a big chance of playing in this year finals series. With the win against the Bombers last week and now the saints this week, the Crows have won the past 2 games in Melbourne.

A 4 goal haul from Jason Porplyzia was enough for the Crows. Hentschel (3), Stevens (2), VanBerlo (2) and Burton (2) were the other multiple goal scorers for the Crows. It was a good win for us, said the Crows coach Sumner. With the spread of goal kickers we have i am sure we can get over the Bulldogs next week in the last match of the season, if we win that, we will just have to wait and see on other results to go our way.
We challeneged the best team in the competition and got under 18 points frmo them the other week, so we are certainly capable of going all the way. We just really need to knuckle down now, and play some good football. And it all begins with the training track.

Crows win in a thriller

Adelaide have won their last round clash against the Western Bulldogs at Aami Stadium by just 2 points. In a close finishing game, the Crows could only just hang onto the win. The Bulldogs with 3 last quarter goal could of won the game for themselves, but their inaccurate kicking for goal was their let down, but credit to the Crows who put a lot of pressure onto the Dogs when in the forward 50.

The Crows with that win however just missed out on playing finals footy. They finished 10th at the end of the regular season which is a good effort, considering they were 14th during the middle of the season. The Crows won their last 5 matches of the season beating Carlton, Richmond, Essendon, St.Kilda and the Bulldogs to try and finish in the 8, but it was percentage that kept them away.
Their coach Hayden said this "We are very lucky not to make the 8. Just percentage kept us out, but i think it was a good effort from the boys in the end when they were sitting down near the bottom of the ladder, and to win your last 5 games of the home and away season and just missing out on the final 8, was a good step for us. The Best thing that came out of this year was the younger players. Symes, VanBerlo, Knights, Vince, Douglas have all gained heaps of experience, and will take the next step next year. So looking forward to that.

A 4 way tie for the Brownlow Medal

4 players have shared this years Brownlow Medal award. This is the biggest that the Brownlow has been shared around in players, after it's Tro in 2003 when Nathan Buckley, Adam Goodes and Mark Ricciuto shared the prestige award.

This year, it was contreversy. Cameron Bruce of the Melbourne Demons had polled the most votes by the end of the night, and polled 6 votes ahead of the actual winner, but Bruce was suspended during the Home and Away season, so he was inellible to win. Same goes with Richmond youngster, Jake King. He finished 2nd in the polling for the night, but he also was inelligble to win.
So the award ended up being shared by 4 players, being Scott Pendlebury of Collingwood, Jimmy Bartel of Geelong, Barry Hall of the Swans, and Richard Tambling of the tigers.

So Gongradulations to all those 4 players, but well done to Bruce and Jake King for being the 2 better players of the year, just not the fairest players.
All the Brownlow Medal winners were intervied the next day and this is what they had to say, firstly starting with Scott Pendlebury of the Pies... "Certainly a surprise, i had a pretty consistant year. I was pretty happy when my name got read out, but you just gotta feel sorry for Brucey don't ya. He had a very good season and he deserved to win, but it just wasn't meant to be i guess".

Barry Hall of Sydney... "Bout time i've won something. Bit of a shock though, didn't think i had that great of a season, was down in form for some matches, but it was pretty consistant in the end. The midfield were certainly a big help for me, since they were the ones getting the ball down to me haha.."

Jimmy Bartel of Geelong...."I am proud to win the Medal, but at the same time its hard to think what Cameron Bruce is thinking. And well Jake King at that matter aswell, since they both were suspended during the year, but ey, wasn't my fault, so i'm happy :p"

Richard Tambling of the Tigers.."Pretty happy to win the Brownlow. Being this young certainly gives yaself some confidence going onto the next year. I know i wasn't suppose to or didn't actually poll the most on the night, but it's just a good aknowledgment of my season"

Geelong win back to back

Geelong have become the first team since the Brisbane Lions in 01,02,03 seasons to win back to back premierships. Last year the Cats defeated the Power in a record margin win in a Grand Final match. This year it was a little different. They played the Swans in what could be described as one of the better Grand Finals we've seen in a while.
Geelong won by 18 points infront of a packed MCG of 88,574 fans.

Sydney: Okeefe -4, Playfair -2, Hall -2, C. Bolton -1

Disposals: Cats: Bartel -33, Kelly -29, Scarlett -26, Ablett -24
Sydney: OKeefe -30, Goodes -29, Faulks -20, Davis -19
