THE WALL HOLDS STRONG
John Hellat reporting from Calcutta on the first game of the ICC Champions Trophy, between South Africa and India.
South Africa won the toss and elected to bat on a shirt front of a pitch, the indian crowd roared with delight as the Indian Team made their way out of the changing rooms. There was alot of expectation on their shoulders.
Lets have a look back at both innings.

Batting too agressively for the situation, Graeme Pollock
South Africa made a blistering start to their innings going at 7.5 per over for the first 10 overs, with Kirsten being the only man out within the first 10, hitting 15 off 12 but Pollock carried on the great work being unbeaten in the first 10 on 42 not out, but he quickly fell with the score at 79, with now 2 wickets down. All the other batsmen got starts getting into the teens and 20's but they couldn't convert. Kallis scored a well made 18, Richards, Cronje and Rhodes, with 27, 24 and 21 respectively played well but they couldn't go further. Cronje's 24 was excting coming off 19 balls with 1 four and 2 sixes, but his batting didn't fit the situation he batted too agressively. Boucher was next in and he provided some great batting with 38, but he fell to the impressive indian attack. Actually the Saffers batting was summed up when they lost their last 4 wickets for 3 runs, slumping from 207/6 to 210 all out. This was a poor total considering the batting surface. The damage was eventually done before Dravid was out for 85 of 87. He was well backed up by Azu, who hit his 50. Dev finished the innings off with a quickfire 11.
The Indian bowlers were great with Pathan, Lal and Dev with 2 wicekts apiece and agarkar the main bowler with 3. Pathan was expenisive during his spell and so to was srinath but agarkar bowler almost 10 overs and only conceded around 35 runs, so he bowled great.

Dravid with a great cover-drive
India started well in their innings, with Gavaskar and Ganguly having a 44 run partnership before they both quickly fell, Gavaskar for 24 and Ganguly for 28. India were in some trouble when the mater blaster was also out for 2. But the Wall, famous for his holding together innings led the charge towards victory, smashing the bowlers to all sections, including 20 runs off of 1 Tayfield over. The first 2 balls were dots then he unleashed a vicious assault smashing a bouncer to cow corner for six, followed by a textbook cover-drive and a great cut, and to finish the over he walloped a slower ball stright back over tayfields head for six.
Well the Saffers bowling was OK, Tayfield dispite his hammering took 2 wickets, and Pollock, De Villiers and Cronje all took 1 wicekt.
