Well, Setanta, I love the channel. Great coverage when Droylsden were live against Oxford at the start of the season.

What is everyone else's opinion on the channel?

Oh and this thursday @ 7.45pm Grays Athletic Vs Droylsden! LIVE!

I've had it for about 5 days, I only got it because of boxing and I want to watch Calzaghe knock outthat racist. Boxings good, they've got Buncey :p The football coverage is ok, it's still not as good as sky but then what is? Sky has fanzone too which makes some really dull matches seem interesting. Still considering it's new it's good and I like the league tables.

I had it since it came out on air, but I got rid of it recently as there was simply no point in keeping it. There were only 1 or 2 things I ever watched, the rest was rubbish. But ifyou support a lower league team its quality as you get lots of coverage. But I only ever watched Newcastle v Middlesbrough on it and that was basically it.

Out of interest, what does Setanta show when the football season is over?

Good question :p I know you're hoping that they'll just be replaying their non stop action packed fun in the IPL.

I'd imagine that it's just the same stuff they've got now with less football and more golf?

Joy!

I did read somewhere that they were after England Cricket tv rights come 2009 though.

Interesting that Setanta were the only bidders for IPL in the UK, do I sense an ITV digital championship football fiasco part two?

What are you referring to Kev, the football side or the cricket side?

If you are talking about the cricket, then they got the rights for relatively little - Sky didn't want to bid, and IMO some cricket is good to flesh out the schedules.

Football wise, unlike ITV Digital, they do have the quality games - FA Cup and England from next season in addition to the Premiership that they have. It's not just Division 1 games like ITV D was.

Also, they have great experience in the pay-tv market - they've been running abroad for some while, and have been present in Ireland also.

Viewing figures and suchlike are discussed here, though beware for the geeks, Sky fanboys and Setanta fanboys :p

The general consensus is that they'll survive - I hope so, IMO competition in the pay-tv market can only be a good thing...

No, I was wondering how much they paid for IPL and how many subscribers they'd get out of it. Surely if there was money to be made out of it Sky would have been interested.

If your talking about Steve Bunce, dear me, anyone that cockney makes me cringe.

Its football isn't as great as coverage as sky, but, its not bad for its first season and it'll improve next season hopefully with cup and England games. I tend to watch it just for the Premiership games and the odd SPL game. I've seen a couple of lower league games when Droylsden were on against Oxford and when Stalybridge were on at home in the setanta shield, it showed all around the area.

It also shows Gaelic football, rugby and golf, so I'd guess it'd just show those in the summer.

However, having said all the positives, Setanta Sports News is the biggest excuse for a sports news ever channel as there has ever been. The amount of cock-ups is unbelievable, so unprofessional.

Oh and Lee, I had an interview for ASFC today!

Come one he's not exactly Danny Dyer levels of cockney :D Didn't know they had England games, all of them?

The IPL will just get the odd Indian and other fans I guess but they'll most likely canel their subscription anyway if they're that devoted to buy it just for cricket. I know if it wasn't for boxing I wouldn't have got it. On all of the many free channels you get though theres nothing worth watching for me on.

ITV have home qualifiers, Setanta have home and away friendlies, and all but one (at the moment, though they could snap this up too) of the away qualifiers.

They also have a large number of away qualifiers for the other home nations...

I used to have Setanta Sports, but it was cancelled when money was tight when my dad left. I plan on subscribing to it next month though purely for the Indian Premier League.

Traitor!!

Spend the money watching minor counties instead ;)

As for Steve Bunce, isn't he that guy who ruins Inside Sport on a regular basis?

Also I've never seen Setanta News but can it really be any worse than SSN? ;)

According to Charles Sale in the Daily Mail (who is usually accurate over such things): ?20m over 5 years i.e. ?4m per year.

This is not a lot of money - the reason Sky didn't go for it was:
  • Clashes with English season
  • No English players
  • Little interest to viewers
  • Not on at a time many would be watching

For Setanta, however, this is a great chance - they can show some cricket, and maybe tempt some other subscribers (I'm certainly considering it for the football and cricket). They are taking the Indian feed, not even adding their own presenter, meaning that they are doing this very low-budget. This is a good move for Setanta IMO - one which doesn't break the bank, but offers a different sport to their growing portfolio...

Big name, top quality cricket at a time ODIs and Tests are scarce.

Also, what's wrong with Sky Sports News? It's a comprehensive, detailed sports news channel to me.
