Are Australia ODI back?

Short answer, no. They're still yet to find anyone to replace Gilchrist and Hayden. Watson's done a decent job but he isn't anywhere near as good as those two.

The bowling isn't as anywhere near good as it used to be either.

Without all these injuries I would have no problem saying that. Haddin, Paine, Lee, Clarke are all missing from the current team. With those guys in the side I would say that the Aussies are back at the top. I think they are missing a good lower order batsman that can score some big runs towards the end. Someone to come in at #7.

Watson
Haddin/Paine
Ponting
Clarke
White
Hussey
Henriques?
Johnson
Lee
Hauritz
Siddle/Bollinger

add Siddle to the injured list, just read on cricinfo that he is done too.

We definitely won't be anywhere near where we were in the 07 WC. Hayden, Gilly and Symonds were quite the combo. Hopefully with Clarke back either Watson or White or both start to play more aggressively. Maybe even Haddin can do this.
If Johnson becomes more consistent and Lee stops getting injured then our bowling will have the strike power which it's missing atm.

Lee is definitely capable and Johnson can do it. The latter seems to need some time to get in though.

Johnson is a good lower order batsman.

In a test match yea but in ODIs in my opinion he is not as reliable. And that would make a long tail and too many bowlers, it would mess with the balance of the team, long term.

They are capable but does it ruin the balance of the team by bringing Johnson in at 7? It can be done as the Aussies showed today but what does the lower order look like then.

7. Johnson
8. Lee
9. Hauritz
10. Siddle
11. Bollinger? or someone else

add in Watson, Clarke and White that can bowl and that is allot of bowling.

The loss of the destructive Hayden and Gilchrist will take a very long time to cover up. Australia will be one of the top sides but its unlikely that they will be the top most side for a very long period of time, like how they did sometime back. They will have their ups and downs and will be beatable but good.

Johnson at 8 can provide the lower order hitting like what Albie use to do. Don't think we are that desperate to play 5 bowlers just yet. If Henriques stays in the side he can hit it and Hopes is very capable of late hitting. His problem is when we collapse then he goes missing.

Forgot about Hopes, he was that guy that I was looking for. He would be the #7 guy for me if I was selecting the Aussie team. Useful batsman and bowler.

that would be a nice balanced team then.

Watson
Haddin/Paine
Ponting
Clarke
White
Hussey
Hopes
Johnson
Lee
Hauritz
Siddle/Bollinger

that looks a bit better IMO.

Looks about right, Bracken will also come into the mix. White needs to bat more aggressively once Clarke returns, we can't have two guys batting slowly. If he doesn't I'd bring Ferguson in.
