Ashes-2023 England VS Australia 16 June-31 July

Whatever happened to Swepson?

Got found out. :spy

In reality he was a bit too inaccurate like most wrist spinners in test cricket. Closest I can think of is Yasir Shah for comparison, he would bowl four decent balls, one good ball but always serve up that one bad ball that would get milked for a boundary. I believe he left the Indian tour after a game due to personal reasons (marriage/childbirth IIRC) and then his compatriot Kuhnemann came in and chucked bowled his way ahead. If you let him face Bazball he’d get destroyed.

I'm thinking they bring him in for Murphy

That would be brazen even by Bazball standards. I didn’t watch the game today but I don’t think he was bad in the first innings despite the circumstances and he looked very solid in the Indian tour. If anything his presence has pushed Lyon to play better since then. He reminds me of Swann too in the way he bowls, I don’t think dropping him is a good move at all when the fifth bowler is MMarsh or a crocked Green.

He was fine but he only bowled 2 overs today. I don't think he deserves dropping. However, Maxwell at 8, with his batting potential, could be a tempting option if you need a spinner who isn't going to bowl 10 overs in a match and England will go after no matter what.

It could be a coincidence as he had a contract for The Blast and he might just be helping out Warwickshire seeing as they missed out on Final's Day.

I believe it may be a contingency plan if they run out of batters given the squad depth otherwise. Bazball has truly corrupted your soul if you’re viewing him as the spinner at eight.

Yasir was a bit better than that, you don’t become the fastest bowler to 200 Test wickets by being like most leggies.
Although he was admittedly crap outside Asia, Caribbean and maybe England

Blame the team strategy for that more than Yasir. I remember when we had the series against Australia in Australia and for some reason, the plan was to bowl outside leg stump. Even the late Shane Warne was confused about that strategy.

He helped us draw the series in England 2-2 (He took a 10-fer in this game).

Yeah I’m not comparing Yasir and Swepson’s abilities… just that the former in his later days was too inconsistent.

Get Tongue in for Robinson I say. The latter has looked listless. It would also help Wood if they had another pacer who could bowl somewhat quick and threaten the batters, they’ve genuinely struggled with picking up any sort of swing or seam unless they stand ahead of the crease and bowling some decent pace helps avoid that. Despite the short turnaround between the last two tests they should try and risk Wood after the game he has had.

We all know that it’s Jimmy coming in though because he isn’t going to be dropped at Old Trafford. Perhaps Broad gets a ’rest’ this time but you’d have to be a bold man to drop him in his current form despite the workload issues when a loss means waving goodbye to the Ashes.
Yeah the fact Tongue has pace halfway between Broad and Wood is why he makes sense, however don't see Jimmy not playing on his home ground

Be very surprised if Jimmy isn't in contention as it's his home ground
Oh he's on for sure.

Concur with the "Tongue in place of Robinson" move too. He has been lacklustre, perhaps the off field antics is affecting him. Has England announced the squad for 4th and 5th Test? If not, Foakes is a must. The amount of damage Bairstow is doing behind the stumps is getting too loud to ignore. He should be playing as a specialist batsman. Perhaps Moeen can make way for Foakes.

Australia would be rueing losing the 3rd Test. They were in a position to close out the game on a number of occasions. Murphy wasn't utilized at all, so unsure why he was picked in the first place. Warner, Marnus and Smith's ordinary outings seem to be affecting their balance a lot.

Smith averaging 31 compared with 110 in 2019 is a big the difference so far.
