Ashes-2023 England VS Australia 16 June-31 July

I went and looked at it and it seems like that average is calculated from games where a bowler has dismissed Smith... except it counts all of the runs he made in that game and not just the ones against said specific bowler.

So if for example he has a measly average of just 24.25 in games where Wood has dismissed him... extrapolate that to all games involving Wood and Smith... that jumps to 45.52.

I'm honestly not sure why that average is even mentioned now. :lol
Good spot, I was a bit unsure about them to be honest.

This is better. Not sure if it includes this match.

English fans going from 2-2 to now showing stats.... :spy! Both team have been horrible this series and have done everything in their power to lose the advantage they have had.

Wagner was the only Kiwi that came away from that series with any credibility. The rest just let us bully them.

Sounds like the average Trans-Tasmanian series.

I think it’s too small of a sample size personally but the case does grow stronger.
Whoa whoa whoa, I'm not saying he can't play anything.

Just that his wonky technique vs short genuine express (and, moreover stuff like that last weird, ungainly slog attempt) keeps him out of my very greatest all time picks.
You'd really need ball tracking (looking at averages, speeds at certain lengths) to assess properly. While it's safe to assume players like Wagner and Wood are more likely to bowl short it doesn't mean that every player does.

Although, Anrich Nortje joins the party it becomes more compelling.

He was the first name I looked up too.

With Wagner you can be dead certain that the only thing he does is bowl short… especially in that one series.

If I was going to do an actual seriouspost thread about it I'd be looking at Richards' (and Sobers') techniques and banging on about the incredible efficiency, simplicity and so forth. They never had to overcome their own techniques.

Richards, just to pick one aspect - look at the power he generates with a short backlift. It's so pure, and a huge advantage over needing a longer swing to generate power. You've literally got more time to play the ball.

Lara, for instance, that massive backlift is not ideal for digging out express yorkers.

Sobers is a top three batter of all time for me. What an absolutely talented player.

I do think it’s a developmental system thing with playing the short stuff in the modern era.
