Asia Cup 2023

Jaiswal has to be a contender surely for the opening slot in all three formats post Rohit's retirement.

Ishan can open as well its just that India will have to start building for a better team or alternative post Rohit and Kohli's departure.

@Ohm this was supposed to be a reply to your post but accidentally I replied to my own post.
Jaiswal-Kishan-Gill looks good

Anyone else feel India desperately need a left handed batsman in that top 3? Shaheen & Nasim bowled the same set of deliveries (individually) and still didn't seem to be bothered even once.

Think they need someone who can drop the anchor and grind out a few overs should the need arise more than a leftie. England’s 2019 side didn’t have a left-handed batter in the top three and it didn’t really hurt them (albeit they had two up next in Morgan and Stokes which current India admittedly don’t). After this WC we’ll have Tilak, Kishan, Pant and Jaiswal all in the mix so I doubt we’ll struggle for it.

Gill’s done the job of anchoring today but that isn’t his natural game for one and he hasn’t looked too comfortable doing it either barring a few blocks and leaves. I don’t necessarily think we need someone in the mould of a primarily red ball specialist or even someone world class at the job like Kane but someone that puts a big value on their wicket in tough conditions would be worth it.

Shaheen before the rain break went for his usual tactic, full inswingers. Copped a couple boundaries. After the break, he shortened his length a little, went with outswingers to set up Rohit, before the inevitable inswinger.

And yeah Gill proves my point with that timely dismissal. Sigh.

Gill has been piss poor to stay the least ever since IPl got over.

His defensive mindset is most disappointing.

To elaborate on this further since there’s no way India are getting back to a competitive total at the moment, Kane Williamson is the ideal player that I would point to for this role and he showed it in the 2019 WC knockouts.

In the semis, he was exceedingly patient at the start after Guptill got out early and played an attritional knock like it was a test match. Once he got his eye well in he upped the scoring rate and got to a fifty. Our side in contrast collapsed in a heap because they were hellbent on being the intent merchants without playing to the conditions.

In the final, he followed a similar template but unfortunately got out just as he was starting to up the scoring rate. Root in similar conditions knew that he had to play the same way. The difference was that he couldn’t quite make the transition in a manner Kane did and got out looking like he was out of ideas. To summarise, you had a spectrum with Root at one end of extreme conservatism and Kohli at the other end with extreme intent whilst Kane was the perfect encapsulation of balance in the middle.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Been thinking since yesterday that we need Wasim Jr as fourth pacer here. I think i was right.

I'd say Nawaz is definitely the fall guy. He doesn't turn it, Shadab is a better bat and he is easily dispensible as shown by Pak trying Usama ahead of him in the Afg series.
