Asia Cup 2023

The bowler after bowling so well lost the plot after the penultimate over.

On a closer look he also looked at that vacant side in his run-up where the ball eventually ended up.

And yeah Pakistan did Pakistan.

Poor captaincy at the end really should have had one more in the circle at least - you know what he is going to do. If he hits it over that a risk you have to take but to let them get that was just a spot of poor captaincy.

Nice reality check for Pakistan - let's see what they do with this before the WC.

Although, ngl, happy that Pakistan India final is not happening.

I think, last moment they realized they had only 3 in the circle, so brought a fielder in from that region. Fine leg, maybe it was

As @wasteyouryouth said, the delivery made no sense with that field. Even then the field was very questionable, leaving both mid on and mid off deep isn’t wise when there’s only two runs left. You gotta put one fielder up in the circle to force the batter to either play a risky shot with a delivery away from that field or tempt him into trying for a slog.

What they ended up with though.. yikes.

Wonder what will be the next tournament format to try and finally force that final.

I'd suggest a series set during the monsoon in Sri Lanka making sure to rain out the other games, and then have a Pakistan-India game in the desert (Abu Dhabi) with a reserve day in case of a sand storm with the other teams being Namibia, Kenya and Zimbabwe.

The South Asia-Developing African League.

Inb4 Sikandar Raza fires Zimbabwe to the final.

Now that Pakistan's tournament is over - I think it is fair to do an analysis of the team this Asia Cup.

1. Fakhar Zaman - 1/10 (been amazing this year against NZ, and England at home but when the ball starts to do anything he has really been found out - maybe a bit of rest and some technique work)
2. Imam-ul-Haq - 4/10 (mediocre at best and known to be a bit of a flat track bully - evidenced by his 100s in tests in Rawalpindi. Barring his 70+ against Bangladesh he has been a walking wicket)
3. Babar Azam - 4/10 (love the guy but barring the 150 against Nepal he has really struggled with the bat, captaincy has been super reactive rather than proactive. Surprised how mediocre he has been in Sri Lanka after quite a successful LPL)
4. Mohammad Rizwan - 8/10 (just can't hate the guy - good between the wickets and working hard and has come in multiple times during crisis and been the reason for us getting a total in so many games)
5. Iftikhar Ahmed - 7/10 (Pathan power - once again can't hate him. Multiple times he's bailed us out and added impetus in the innings. Really shouldn't be bowling anywhere near the number of overs he is as a part-time but done a good job)
6. Agha Salman - 5/10 (not really a fan of the guy but he has tried to be positive from the get-go - no major scores and gets out doing stupid stuff. Defo would prefer Saud Shakeel but I guess he gets the nod with his bowling)
7. Shadab Khan - 3/10 (bowling has been abysmal and the reason for the excessive use of Ifti. All that T20 cricket and just fires it in and all over the place. Please don't try and make him an Irfan Pathan and lose the leggie that we so desperately need. Bonus point for his fielding and attitude but has been horrendous with both bat and ball all Asia Cup - barring Nepal)
8. Faheem Ashraf - 1/10 (f Inzi for bringing in a player that hasn't earned the right to be anywhere near the team for the sake of a "bowling allrounder" - he's not fast enough nor does he swing the ball to actually get any wickets and averages 10 with the bat and top scored with a 4 against India)
9. Naseem Shah - 8/10 (love the guy and the attitude, I rate him as the best bowler we have at the moment - swings it at the start and uses speed and variation at the end. Just wish he got more reward with the ball at the start - maybe the ball does too much for him so needs to fine-tune. But he's only 21 and by far a special talent)
10. Shaheen Afridi - 6/10 (not quite at his very best yet I feel - has sprayed the ball a lot at the start and looks like teams have decided to attack him and put him off his bowling but his spell post rain against Rohit and Kohli was really nice in the first game - taken wickets when needed. His pace has been a bit down since his injury but I feel like the more he plays it should hopefully come back)
11. Haris Rauf - 7/10 (goes for a few but gets wicket so can't blame him. Few good games but has been picked off by India in both games - wish he hit his yorker a little more)

Extras -
Mohammad Haris - 2/10 (only played one game but feel like he is not a ODI player yet - needs a few seasons in domestic but exceptional fielder)
Mohammad Nawaz - 6/10 (bowled okay and let down by Shadab on the other end against Sri Lanka, should not have been dropped for Faheem - should have been a bit better with the bat in the SL game)
Zaman Khan - 6/10 (felt sorry for the lad with the last over - can't blame him but he needs some tuning to be akin to Malinga for Pakistan. Does need to bring out that Malinga yorker more)
Mohmmad Wasim - 5/10 (wasn't utilized in the series and can't blame him - got unlucky with some French cuts but also bowled a few rank deliveries. Can't blame him when he spent so much time on the bench)
Abdullah Shafique - 7/10 (one inning was decent - but painfully slow at the start with no urgency for quick singles and only got pushed with Rizwan started scampering)

If anything - the home series on our flat Pindi and Lahore pitches have ruined our batters! Everyone else has been aggressive and positive from the start and we have struggled to break 50 in the first 10 in Sri Lanka and lost wickets in batches. Lets see how they approach the WC in India

Poor captaincy and drop catches costed the match for Pakistan, but the bowlers gave one hell of a fight.

The more I see of Babar, the more I firmly believe that his captaincy has been below par. He seems to do well, when the bowlers pick up early wickets. When faced with a tough situation, Babar seems like a lost soul. If the going gets tough, he thinks to start doing something- we saw this in the Ind v Pak game as well. Pakistan might have a tough time in India, should they start a losing trend- Sri Lanka have exposed them to a large extent.

That said, let us not take away the credit from Lanka. They came off the back of a qualifier and have played some good cricket- given the lack of their 1st choice players. Some exciting talents to watch out for in the future, however, I certainly wouldn't go as far as calling for Wellalage to replace Shanaka (as some experts have been suggesting)

From what I hear, Dravid & Co all set to make changes for the last game. Bumrah, Hardik, Rohit/ Kohli to be rested. Jack-A**es-the lot of them

How dare they make changes after playing on three consecutive days three days ago and with a gap of one day between this meaningless game and the final?!

I actually prefer it. It's not a WC game, it's a dead rubber - cut them some slack. Let's expect more from the Finals.
