Ricky Ponting, Australia's captain, has been ruled out of the first Test against India at Bangalore, which starts on October 6, with a fractured left thumb.

That should make the contest a little equal. No R. Ponting for Australia and (as it looks highly likely) no S. Tendulkar for India.

Australia: Players to Watch

All the players in this Australian line-up are good cricketers. But there are some players whom the indians have to be wary of.

1. M. Hayden: he was by far the best batsmen for Aus when they visited in 2001.

2. M. Clarke: Talented batsman. Plays spin well. has good track record against india.

3. D. Lehmann: he handled Murali extremely well when Aus visited SL. Can give Bhajji and co. lot of headache.

4. M Kasprowicz: They call him subcontinent specialist. has been in good form too.

5. Shane Warne: All may say that he has worst record against india but he still remains Australia's trump card. Has been in good form since his comeback.

I have personally not seen S. Watson or C. White in action and would not like to comment on them. But from what i have heard, if C. White bowls like Kumble then he can be a dangerous customer.

NZ's tour of India last year saw some dead pitches and dull draws. Hope that this time they atleast make better pitches. BCCI's comment was that the games would have a result and will carry on till 5th day. Ahmedabad and Mohali had the worst pitches and there was no fun at all. The teams had good batting line-ups and none got out unless he threw away his wicket.

In ny opinion the pitches should be a bit like what we saw at Lahore helpful for seamers early on, then easy to bat on and finally good for spinners.

i was a little bit suprised that aus did not include macgil in the team .... he is a good spinner a qulity spinner should i say and in those subcontenit pitches you need qaulity spinners.

That's what they've got Mr. SK Warne in the team for mate. Brad Hodge has been called up for Ricky Ponting, but is unlikely to play a game, as Michael Clarke is stepping in. Also Adam Gilchrist has been named the captain. I suspect either Darren Lehmann or Shane Warne will be vice captain.

who cares if you cheer or no.

Sadly the series will start with Sachin, Ponting missing out. But it'll be a good opportunity for new players like Clarke, Yuvraj to make their mark. Australia look strong in batting even without Ponting though. May be a weak link is inexperienced 2nd spinner which India will look to attack.

India's batting is going to be totally dependent on Rahul Dravid and V.V.S.Laxman. If they fail, I don't think India could win.

Considering Sehwag, Yuvraj and Chopra, none of these can make a match winning difference. Veeru and Yuvi are in poor form and Chopra has a poor average. Chopra may bat till tea but would get a maximum of 60 or something which is not great. Sourav Ganguly hasn't been involved in very big patnerships so it will hurt.

Bowling won't be a worry. Irfan,Zaheer,Jumbo and Bhajji are all good and wicket-taking bowlers. I have no problem with Parthiv either.

I would recommend dropping Sehwag,Yuvraj and Chopra and getting Sriram,Mongia and Gambhir who have been consistent on domestic level.

btw rahulk666, "Rest of India" is thrashing Mumbai. Mumbai need 412 with 7 wickets in hand.
Edited:The match is over now.
Rest of India 314 & 378
Mumbai 198 & 204 (68.0 ov)
Rest of India won by 290 runs :)
